The words resound in my head, calling up the image of a rambling farmhouse with a wrap-around porch, acres of blue sweetgrass and a dusty, kilometre-long driveway leading to a ramshackle red barn.
The horses in the pasture whicker and neigh when vehicles come up the lane. A tractor-sized tire hangs from the old maple tree in the front yard, and rows of tulips and daisies circle the path to the house.
The kitchen--oh, you'd love the kitchen!--has an old stone floor. Copper pots and pans hang from the ceiling on gleaming hooks. Atop the granite counter, right next to the big window above the double sink, rests an apple pie. The scent of cinnamon drifts slowly across the back yard, announcing that this is farm country!
The bannister for the gleaming oak staircase shines from constant love and attention. Tiny dust motes drift lazily through the air, made visible by the large bay windows decorated with colourful, printed curtains in each room.

Next, I think about a luxurious apartment, high atop an ivory tower--so high that the windows reveal wisps of the clouds. The furniture is elegant white leather, and the kitchen is filled with the most modern appliances.
The bedrooms are decorated tastefully in dark greens and blues, with light splashes of white and cream to liven up the atmosphere. The bedframes are pewter and brass, creating a striking contrast with the sensual, soft mattresses and duvets that reach to the ground.
In the long hallway, modern paintings and sculptures draw visitors' eyes, subtle flashes of colour upon the white walls. The collection is priceless, and is expertly maintained.
In the bathroom--the marble bathroom--a sunken tub with whirlpool jets awaits filling. The faucets are solid brass, and the clear, shining mirrors reflect the room back into itself.
A noiseless, almost invisible elevator leads to the underground parking garage, where a silver Mercedes gleams. A combination of locks and safety devices keeps the outside where it belongs, and protects the treasures within.

The furniture is slightly ratty where the cat stretches to scratch her nails. The colourful afghan knitted years ago by a close friend lays on the floor, serving to protect the dog's elbows from the faded maple boards.
Dust bunnies hide in the corners, whiling away their days along with the pet hair. In the kitchen, lost cheerios and onion skins collaborate with the dust bunnies to take over the house. The dirty pots and pans piled on the counter await a good washing in the sink with the leaky faucet. On the fridge, bars of magnets protect brightly-painted sheets of construction paper and papers with gold stars.
The staircase near the front door is blocked by a pile of shoes--every size and shape. Coats hang haphazardly from the banister, and the stairs themselves are cluttered with books and papers that never quite made it all the way up.
The bathroom has an old clawfoot tub that shines from a recent cleaning. But the mat on the floor is soaking wet and in a pile in the corner. Towels are slung over the shower stall and the mirror above the sink is cracked in one corner. Multi-coloured toothbrushes litter the counter and an open tube of toothpaste is regurgitating its contents onto the spotted formica.
The bedrooms have no colour schemes. The sheets and blankets don't match. The curtains are pretty prints, but they hang in a desultory manner from their rods. The beds aren't made (spy the cat sleeping in that pile of blue blanket?), and toys litter the bright rugs on the floor.
Out on the wrap-around porch, though, a man and woman sit on a rickety swing together. Large mugs of aromatic coffee warm their work-worn hands as they watch three children play on the slightly overgrown lawn. The children are clean, and as tidy as children get. They yell, and laugh, and call to their parents on the porch. The dog, a shaggy, grinning mutt, is catching a frisbee thrown by the oldest boy. The young girl with beribboned pigtails is perched atop a swing, getting the odd push from her older sister, who practises cartwheels and somersaults on the grass.
The man and the woman look on and laugh, talking in low voices that carry gently on the breeze ruffling the leaves of the old maple tree. The man says something to the woman, and she turns to look and him with a laugh. He kisses her lightly on the lips, and they share a secret smile before turning to their children.
That is my dream home.
