Star attraction

Fox Television Studios, a subsidiary of Star India, had produced "Meri Awaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshini", which became a runaway hit on Star Plus. It was for the first time that one of the biggest broadcasters in India, Star TV, produced its own mega serial. The idea was clear that they did not want to be squeezed by major content providers (like Ekta?) who also supply content to rival channels. Now Fox Television Studios is coming out with its second mega serial, "Sangam" on Star Plus (Monday-Thursday 7 p.m.) from August 20. "Sangam" depicts the story of Ganga, a small town girl who is intelligent and ambitious. She strives to fulfil her father's dreams. Jennifer Winget (of "Kasautii Zindagi Ki" fame) plays Ganga.

Telly Talk

Jennifer Winget aka Sneha of Kasautii Zindagi Kay seems to be having an identity crisis. Because of her name she is often misunderstood to be a foreigner. "Many people feel I might be a foreigner but I want to tell everyone that I am as Indian as any other. My dad is a Punjabi and my mother a Maharashtrian Christian." she exclaims. Often called Sneha, Jennifer admits "I am most often addressed as Sneha, it's only when I reveal my real name that I get funny reactions."

Maybe now she would be able to convince people of her desi origins better as she has bagged the lead role for Star Plus' new TV soap Sangam where she plays a typical Indian.

Chaitanya Chaudhary of "Kahiin Toh Hoga" will soon be seen on Star Plus playing the character of Sagar in the new serial "Sangam". Here are some of the foodie's palate favourites.

Are you a complete foodie or do you watch what you eat?
I used to be an all-out foodie, but now I have to watch what I eat because of my profession. I just can't afford to be careless about it.

Your favourite cuisine -Continental/Oriental/Indian/others.
Although I like many cuisines, my favourite is Chinese. And yes, I must mention that I love lady's-finger, I simply relish Bhindi Masala.

What do you prefer --- homemade food or outside food?
No second thoughts about this, it has to be homemade food.

Do you like vegetarian or non-vegetarian food?
I like both, but given a choice, I have an inclination towards non-vegetarian fare.

What drink do you like along with your food?
I don't drink anything while having food. I drink water only after some time. This is because water dilutes the food and that leads to proper digestion.

Your favorite beverage?
Sweet-and-salt lime water. I think this drink is very refreshing.

Any hard drinks that you consume? If yes, what are the brands you prefer?
I don't take hard drinks at all.

What about junk food?
I do like Vada Pao, but sadly now I can't eat to the brim. I control my temptation somehow.

Your favourite fast food eatery?
SubWay sandwiches are an all-time favourite.

A restaurant/eating place which you think is a must-visit for all and sundry?
I like Aromas of China. The quality, service and the food, all are just amazing. And above all, it's not that expensive either.

Your take on diet and health food?
One should eat lots of organic food; packed foods have preservatives in them and are dangerous. Just eat healthy, and never make your body starve.

What would be that one dish which you will not be able to resist?
Sweets, and I just can't resist chocolate cakes.

Could you share some recipe with us?
I don't get time to cook often, but whenever I do, I try out this and that. I love making bhurjis, especially Egg Bhurji and Egg Pav Bhaji Bhurji. I would like to share the recipe of Egg Pav Bhaji Bhurji. It's one of the easiest to make and tastes fantastic.

Serves one

Ingredients:

Two eggs

? chopped onion

1 finely chopped tomato

1 tsp red chilli powder

1 ? tsp pav bhaji masala

Salt to taste

2 tbsp oil

Method:
Beat the eggs well. On a heated pan, put 2 tbsp of oil and leave for two minutes. Put in the chopped onions, and fry till it turns golden brown. Add the chopped tomato and mix well. Keep stirring till the tomato starts releasing water. Add salt according to taste, and put in a tsp of red chilli powder, 1 ? tsp of pav bhaji masala. Mix well. Cook this on low flame for two minutes. Finally, add the eggs, and stir well until fully cooked. Serve hot with brown bread.

Jennifer would prefer dressing up in a sexy saree over a mini skirt.

Jennifer Winget, the actress from Kasauti Zindagi Kay says that she is a mix of many cultures.

Jennifer would prefer dressing up in a sexy saree over a mini skirt. Fond of music, the actor has a lot of friends in the telly world but has no favourites.

Single and looking for someone witty and classy, Jennifer will soon be spotted as the lead actor in a soap opera on Star Plus.

Girls please hit on me: Shaleen
30 Aug 2007, 0000 hrs IST,ITI SHREE MISRA ,TNN

Like most of the TV actors these days, that he got into acting by sheer coincidence.

There is something special about Shaleen Bhanot which endears him to all the viewers instantaneously, inspite of all the bad man roles he's played on television in serials like Kulvaadhu, Kaajal and Saat Phere etc.
He maintains, like most of the TV actors these days, that he got into acting by sheer coincidence. But when Shaleen Bhanot says it, he means it.

I was happily assisting my Dad in business and learning the ropes of it when suddenly everything changed for me. Never in my wildest of dreams had I thought of getting into acting. Infact I always wanted a white-collar job for myself, says he.

Shaleen came to Mumbai for a business contract and instead found himself at the audition of MTV Roadies and subsequently a part of it, touring the country which later on led to his doing serials and also a few films.
The films that Shaleen has worked in include a Bengali Film Devdoot with none other than Mithun Chakraborty and Hindi flick Pyare Mohan with Viviek Oberoi and Fardeen Khan. An avid Mithun fan, Shaleen is full of praises for the actor. "Mithun Da is fantastic. I got to learn so much from him. Pyare Mohan on the other hand was loads of fun to do."

But that's not all that there is to this lively young actor. Passionate about dance, Shaleen is proficient in several forms of dance including Jazz, Kathak, Salsa and ofcourse the filmy latka-jhatkas. "Dance is something which I love, it helps me understand my body-language," says Shaleen. But his hectic schedule does not allow him to indulge in this passion of his. Add to this the two separate businesses that he is single handedly handling.

But unlike his on-screen persona, on most days one would find Shaleen Bhanot listening to Sufi numbers by Abida Parveen rather than partying or dating girls. He is absolutely unapologetic for the lack of action and passion in his life. "I'm not a party guy, so I don't miss out on fun that way. And as far as romance goes, I don't want it right now," says this dynamic youngster. "I want to work now and then settle down with a girl who's simple, sweet and loving. Till then I don't want any distractions. I've sketched my life and till date it as gone as planned by me and I don't want to change that," says he.

But like any typical youth he doesn't mind being eye-candy to girls. "Although I would love girls hitting on me. Someone hit on me, yaar!" pleads Shaleen.

But the guys beware as he can be as dangerous in real life as he is on the small-screen. Shaleen had once set fire to his friends trousers out of sheer jealousy.

Coming from a conservative family, Shaleen's childhood was spent devoid of films and television viewing. So now that he's part of this arc-light, how do his parents react? "My parents, especially my Dad is cool about it although my Mom loves the attention she gets when I'm with her. They are both proud of me and it makes me feel damn good."

Talking of his future projects, Shaleen informs that as of now he's busy 24x7 with his two serials and the rest he'll see as it comes be it films or TV.
Well we wish that these sparkling kohl lined eyes never stop dreaming and that all those dreams get fulfilled.

Q How different is Ganga of Sangam from Sneha of Kasauti?
Ganga is an innocent and simple small town girl. Her dream is to fulfill her father's wish of building a school in his hometown. She is like a normal person who takes everything in her stride. Sneha, on the other hand, has been through two marriages. The character has been through different stages of womanhood. Though she is single she does not depend on her family for financial support. Instead, she chooses to be independent and also wants her daughter to be like her.

Q Which role do you prefer?
Both are good but I think Ganga is more challenging because it's a strong and powerful character and it has more variations to it. She experiences some really great as well as sad moments in life. Emoting takes a toll on me and at the end of the day, I feel totally exhausted.

Q Does Ganga succeed in fulfilling her father's dream?
That I can't reveal but Ganga's journey is full of good moments mixed with heartbreak. She had always been close to her parents, particularly her father, but because of an incident everything gets shattered and she is left alone.

Q Who comes to her rescue? Is it Chaitanya Chowdhary who plays a property developer?
Well, she falls in love and he becomes an important part of her journey.

Q Tell us about the love triangle and heartbreaks Ganga goes through.
The love triangle is there. There are heartbreaks too. But Ganga never stops. Like the sacred river, she continues with her journey and works on her dream.

Q What's happening to Sneha of Kasauti now? Has the character got lost somewhere after the generation leap?
Right now the focus is on the new generation but Sneha is very much around.

Q You started your career with films. How did television happen?
I did my first film, Raja Ko Rani Se Pyaar Ho Gaya, when I was 12-years-old and it was great fun. But I went back to my studies after doing Kuch Na Kaho. I really didn't take a break from acting because while studying, I did a couple of ads. I didn't plan to do serials but I was offered a role in Shakalaka Boom and that's how television happened. Besides Kasauti I have done Kkusum and Koi Dil Mein Hai. But it's Kasauti which has given me all the name and fame.

Q Apart from acting what are the other things you like to do?
I love music, reading philosophical books and playing tennis in the morning. I also like to hang out with my friends. Sanjeet Bedi is one of my best friends. He is so cute.

Jennifer Winget who's popular as Kasauti Zindagi Kay's Sneha has bagged the lead role in Fox Television's new soap Sangam to be aired on Star Plus. The actress who's playing a mother to a grown-up girl in Kasauti..., couldn't have asked for a better break...
Is Sangam your first lead role?
No, I had done a Balaji serial Karthika, aired on Hungama, in which I played the title role. It was a very good experience. I learnt a lot in this serial.ng part of a daily serial, Since it was a daily soap, I was in every scene and that helped me gain confidence in front of the camera. I also gained a little knowledge about direction and camera angles. I think I grew up with this serial. Sangam, however, is my first lead role in a Star Plus serial and it is entirely a different role, which I think I am fortunate to get. Its about this small-town girl Ganga who does her best to fulfuil her father's dream.

Not many people know about your Karthika...
Yeah, that's because the serial was basically targetted at the youth and was on air for seven months. It didn't get the kind of response it deserved. But it was a very good show where I played this 16 year old girl who wanted to be a pop singer and idolised a academic man. It was a cute Archie comic kind of a story...

What is so special about Ganga that differentiates her from other protagonists?
Ganga is this sweet, simple, innocent but ambitious girl. Though she has her own aspirations, her main aim is to fulfill her father's dream, that of opening a school in the town. For Ganga, her father is the epitome of everything in life. One incident, however, shatters the entire family and with it her ambitions and aspirations bite dust. Yet, she decides to pursue her father's dream. Like river Ganga, which flows over all obstacles, my Ganga faces all the hurdles and overcomes them. It's the journey of a fun-loving, lively girl transforming into a mature, understanding woman. A complete role and a beautiful character replete with a myriad emotions, it requires so much energy that at the end of the day's shoot I feel exhausted but content .

How did you land this role?
I had a meeting with the Fox people but initially, because of certain issues I wasn't doing the role. However, after a month it came back to me.

And Jennifer was destined to play Ganga...
(Laughs) Yeah, I know it sounds odd but you could say that.

Do you relate to the character?
I relate to the emotional side of Ganga. I feel Ganga has to go through a lot in life and she has so much strength. She teaches me a lot. I am extremely moody, if I am in a mood to have fun, I can be the joker, in not, I will just sit in the corner. In comparision, Ganga is full of life.

Now that you are doing another daily, will you continue to play Sneha in Kasautii Zindagi Kay?
Sneha has got me a lot of recognition and money. It (Sneha) is still on. I entered the serial two years ago when it took its first generation leap. Sneha comes from a sophisticated family and has a mind of her own. In between she had one through many lows, become a drug-addict and ended up losing her first and second husband. Now she is the mother of a grown-up girl.

So, this serial has come at an opportune time where you are playing yourself?

Travel with Jennifer Winset

Jennifer Winset (Sneha from Kasautii Zindagi Kay) shares her favourite traveling experience in South East Asia, while on a shoot schedule!

Favourite Destination...
I like Malaysia and Singapore which I visited last year during the shooting of Kasautii Zindagi Kay. I like the shopping malls over there- they're very big and clean and I did a lot of shopping! In Malaysia I found shoes for very cheap so I brought different styles. I also bought a whole lot of western outfits, purses and hand bags. The total amount I spent on my shopping spree was Rs.40,000!

When I had the time over there I visited the amusement park which is very big.

I craved Indian food in Malaysia
In Malaysia, I was really craving Indian food. Whenever I went out shopping I had to eat burgers which I have come to hate because on the tour it was all I was eating. On the sets however we used to have rice with chicken curry.

I lost my passport just before leaving!
I lost my passport on the last day of our shoot. I remember everyone was ready and even I was packing my baggage. I was about to leave and suddenly I realized my passport was no where to be seen. I started crying and the whole crew was searching for it. After a while of searching and no luck we made up our mind to go the embassy for the help. One of the crew member said she would search for the last time and she went upstairs to my room. I was sitting in the lobby when she came and told me she had found it in the corner. This was my worst memory ever.

Mixing work and pleasure
Even though I was not on holiday, because I went there to shoot I had a lot of good memories from the trip. And yes, I also shopped a lot!

Tips for the tourist
Please take care of your valuables especially your pass-port If you aren't familiar with the place you should always travel with people you know
  • January is the best season to go to Malaysia or Singapore
