PART 6 B
"Now, it is time for our second and final round. Out of the four teams, only two have qualified. In the first round, we tested your practical knowledge, and in the second one, we will test your theoretical knowledge. The points from both the rounds will be added up to decide which team wins."
Vardhan sir's announcement filled both the qualifying teams with the determination to win.
Both the teams were allotted separate tables, with buzzers of different colours. Randhir's team had the red buzzer, and Sanyukta's team had a yellow one.
PKC did a quick run-through of the rules of the competition. Without wasting any time, the competition began, with PKC as the quizmaster.
"Q1. In a sinusoidal wave, the time required for a particular point to move from maximum displacement is 0.17 seconds. What is the frequency of the wave?"
The red buzzer rang.
Randhir said, "1.47 Hertz!"
"Correct answer!" PKC said.
"Q2. A simple pendulum is executing simple harmonic motion with a time period T. If the length of the pendulum is increased by 21%, what is the increase in the time period of the pendulum of increased length?"
The red buzzer rang again.
Payal confidently replied, "30%."
"Wrong answer!" replied PKC. Payal turned red as she received irritated looks from her team members.
"Q3. In Davisson-Germer experiment, maximum density is observed at?"
Sanyukta answered, "50 degrees and 54 volt!"
"Correct answer...but you are not supposed to speak out of turn. I am counting this answer, but this must not be repeated," PKC replied.
Sanyukta whispered in Rehan's ear, "Our buzzer is not working."
"That's disastrous!" he replied in a low voice.
"Silence please!"
Q 4. A cell having e.m.f of 1.5 volts, when connected across a resistance of 14 ohms, produces a voltage of only 1.4 volts across this resistance. What must be the internal resistance of the cell?"
The red buzzer rang. Before Sahil could answer, Rehan said, "14 ohms!"
"Correct answer...but the yellow team gets no points as it was an out of turn answer."
The members of the team groaned.
"Q5. By keeping moment of inertia of a body constant, if we double the time period, what will happen to the angular momentum?"
Sahil pressed the red buzzer and said, "It will double!"
"Correct answer!" PKC said.
"Now, the easiest question...what is the net charge on a capacitor?"
"0!" said Payal, pressing the red buzzer!
"Correct!" PKC said.
"With this, the red team wins the second round. Now the marks of both the teams for both the rounds will be added up!" he continued.
The judges added up the marks and handed over the result to Vardhan sir.
"The winning team, which will represent FITE at the inter-college Tech Fest in November is...the red team! Congratulations!" he said.
Randhir and his team mates hugged and cheered.
He felt like he was on top of the world! He had badly wanted to represent his college in the inter-college Tech Fest.
Yet, this victory didn't make him feel as happy as it should have...
Flashback to half an hour ago...
Randhir had overheard Maya saying that the next round was the quiz round. And that it was the final one. He even heard which team would be allotted which buzzer.
His team had already lost the first round. They couldn't afford to lose the second one!
He wanted to represent his college...anyhow. It was something he had worked really hard for. He had spent nights in the library and mechanical lab. Endless nights. He couldn't let this opportunity slip out of his hands.
No.
He stealthily walked to the table of the yellow time, with pliers in his hand.
After some hesitation, he sighed. "Sorry God. Sorry Sanyu. Sorry guys," he said.
With this, the wire of the yellow buzzer was cut off from the electric socket.
