Chapter 8.

On Saturday my parents and I went down to the market to buy some grocery. It was sunny so everyone was wearing short sleeves. Maa and I sat next to each other on a bench across a busy shop.

My phone rang. "Who is it?" Maa asked before I could even check.

"I don't know," I said. It was Randhir though.

"Are you currently at your house?" he asked.

"Umm. No," I said.

"That was a trick question. I knew the answer because currently I am at your house," he chuckled.

"Oh. Um. Well we are on our way, I guess?"

"Awesome. See you soon."

Randhir Singh Shekhawat was sitting on the front step as we pulled into the driveway. He was holding a bouquet of bright orange tulips beginning to bloom and wearing a basket ball player's jersy.

Papa went up to him and shook hands.

He offered me the flowers and I accepted it.

" How would you like to go on a picnic with me?

"I would love to go on a picnic with you." I replied with a smile.

"Great! Shall we go?"

"Uh.Um... Wait. I need to change."

"Okay."

While I was changing I could hear papa and Randhir talking.

Papa: "You are a survivor yourself, then?"

Randhir: "Yeah. You know, I didn't cut this fella off for the hell of it. Legs are heavy."

Papa: "How are you now?"

Randhir: "I am grand. NEC for fourteen months."

Maa: "That is wonderful."

Papa: "Look Randhir, you have to understand Sanyukta's still pretty sick, and she will be the rest of her life. I mean, she's gonna want to keep up with you, she's that kind of girl, but the truth is her lungs..."

And then I entered silencing him.

"So, where are you both going?" Maa asked.

Randhir went up to her and whispered something in her ears. "Shh." He said keeping his fingers on his lips. "It is a secret!"

I admit he looked so cute at that time.

"Sanyukta, did you keep your phone?" Maa asked

I showed it to her as an evidence. We set off. After about 15 minutes I asked Randhir, " Where are we going?"

"You are such a spoil sport. Patience let it be a surprise."He winked.

And then I kept quiet. After about half an hour we reached the place. It was adventure island.

I had never been to that place. It looked amazing and I thanked Randhir for bringing me here. We entered and went to the lawn area and he spread an orange mat.

"Sandwich?" he asked.

"I guess dutch cheese and tomato?"

"The tomatoes are Indian." He said.

"How dare you?"I chuckled.

"Well, Sanyukta Agarwal, like so many before you, and listen, I say this with the utmost affection, you used your wish moronically."

"Yaa, I was thirteen..."

"Alright! Hush! I am in the midst of a grand soliloquy here. You were young. Impressionable. The Grim Reaper staring you in right the face and it lead you to rush into making a wish you didn't really want. But how could little Sanyukta Agarwal, having never read "An Imperial Affliction" know that her one true wish was to visit Mr. Peter Van Houten in his Amsterdamian exile."

"But I didn't save it so..."

"It's a good thing I saved mine."

"Really?" I was anticipating something.

"I'm not gonna give you my wish or anything, Hazel." And I laughed.

" If that's what you're thinking. However, you know, I...I too have a interest in meeting this Mr. Peter Van Houten and I really didn't think it would make much sense to meet him without the girl who introduced me to the book in the first place, now would it? So I talked with the Genies and they're all for it. We leave in a month." He continued

I was in awe. He just said that he is taking me to Amsterdam with him to meet Peter Van Houten.

"OMG!! I AM FREAKING OUT." I almost screamed.

"I know it." he acted with I-Know-It-All look.

"I love you and I seriously do." I squealed.

And then we embraced. After few minutes I realized what I said and broke the hug.

"So did you just say you love me?" Randhir asked.

"Uh. Um. Uh. Uh. Yes. You know as a friend." I covered up.

"Really?" He cocked his brow.

"Ye...yes."

"Okay."

"Thank you Randhir for all this. It really means a lot."

"You don't need to say thank you. I am excited."

"Me too. So tomorrow is Parth's operation."

"Yes."

"How is he doing? I mean is he okay after the breakup."

"He shows he is but he is not."

"I know. Did you talk to Vidushi?"

"I won't talk to her ever."

"Okay."

Then there was silence for few seconds.

"So let us go."

"Yeah." I replied.

He dropped me home and I went to talk to my mother. She was folding the clothes while watching T.V. and I told her everything.

"That's incredible. Sanyu, that's so beautiful."

" I know."

" And a little insane."

" Oh, it's super insane. It's craz...it's...it's crazy."

" Well..."

" It's Amsterdam!"

" He just met you!"

" I know!"

" And he's giving you his wish!"

" Well, we're sharing the wish. I mean, he...he... Yeah, we're sharing it."

" That's sweet. Unless..."

" What?"

" Is he your boyfriend? Is that...?"

" Stop it. Do not...he is not my boy... Mom, focus. We're talking about Amsterdam."

"But you like him so much."

"Ssh! Stop! Pay attention! Please! Can I go?"

" Right, as your mother, I love this idea. And, I...I think we should talk to Doctor."

" Okay." I nodded.
