After saas-bahu sagas, the small screen is now riding high on supernatural elements that include everything from witches and ghosts to demons and shape-shifting snakes. While many people have branded such content regressive, TV actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who plays the lead role in a daily soap, feels that "such content works".
Bhattacharjee says dutiful bahus'and supernatural elements work on the small screen because "audiences love such characters".
"People want drama. We can't look for logic every time. At times, to create drama, you need to put logic aside," she adds.
The actor goes so far as to say that these shows are doing well because people relate to such stories.
"Audiences love such characters. They also like watching an actor play the dutiful daughter-in-law. At the same time, vamps are hits as well, as there is no drama without them," says Devoleena, adding, "There must be something that people get out of these shows. Hence, they watch them. For entertainment, there are enough comedy shows. Despite there being entertaining shows, if a serial continues to do well, then there must be something driving its popularity."
The actor also believes that daily soaps always do better than other shows. "Several content-driven shows have come and gone. But daily soaps still get the highest ratings," she adds.
