Part 6

Sorry for the delay guys...was too busy to write

Rashi's phone rang and she walked to her room "Yes Papa, tell me ...Gopi is here..."

She spent almost half an hour talking to her dad and looked like an entirely different person when she returned to the kitchen. However, instead of helping the elder Modi ladies in making theplas, she went near Koki and Hetal and told "Mummyji Gopi and I have to go to Dad's house. We should leave now "

Normally Koki would have asked for the reason behind this unplanned visit but anxiety was writ all over Rashi's face and she didn't seem to be in a mood to explain things...they got the permission they needed...Rashi lied to Gopi by telling that she doesn't know the real reason and Papa would reveal it later...Rashi drove as fast as she could and reached R Nagar in 15 mins. The door of their house was open and a strange man sat on the chair oposite to Jitu Bhai. He was worried...his expressions clearly told that he is facing a great personal tragedy.

Gopi and Rashi said "Jai Sri Krishna"...and the man got up and said "Gopi beta "

Gopi gave a questioning look to Jitubhai...as if she was asking him -Mamaji who is he?

Urmila was beating her bedroom door and requesting her husband to unlock it...she was hurling the choicest of abuse at someone called Prahlad...

Gopi moved to unlock the door but Rashi pulled her back...Gopi was surprised at her reaction but before she could speak a word Jitubhai held Gopi's hand and said- "Gopi dikra today is the day I have always been dreading ...but I can't hide the truth..it has to come out sooner or later. Forgive me for keeping you in the dark for such a long time...but trust me I did it with your best interests in mind"

"Mamaji why are you telling all this and why have you locked Maami?"

"Gopi you have to know the truth to understand the situation. We hid it and cut off all ties with our relatives, so that we could shield you from their poisonous words...

Gopi, please brace yourself...You know that your mom was my sister.what you don't know is that your Dad was Urmila's brother..."

Gopi was shocked ...and so was Rashi (albeit to a less extent as she knew some parts of the story).

"Haan Dikra, our family believed in mutual alliance when it came to marriage. Urmila wasn't like this before...she loved her brother immensely and was extremely close to your mom --her bhabhi and nanad.

There was an educational gap between your parents, your mom was a post graduate whereas your dad was a B.A..yet they bridged the gap and lived like a normal couple...until one day when your dad found you crying...and your mother was nowhere in sight...she had left behind a note-----a note which destroyed your father's will to live...Sarala had written that she felt stifled in the marriage. She has big dreams in life but marriage has tied her down..besides they lack intellectual parity and she got married to him due to emotional pressure by her parents...the entire letter read like a liberation manifesto..your Dad was shattered- not just because his wife- whom he loved more than his dear life left him...but also because she eloped with his most trusted friend Prahlad Shukla.

The shock was too much to bear...your dad died soon afterwards..Urmila now detested Sarala and blamed her for her brother's death...she believed that girls follow their mother's footsteps and so she denied you an education...lest you become a vishkanya like your mom...we brought you home and hid the truth from everybody so that it doesn't mar Rashi and your's marriage prospects...Gopi you look exactly like your mother...Urmila sees her image in you and this brings out the worst in her.

We never heard from Sarala again...till now...she married Prahlad and settled down in Delhi...she is on her death bed dikra...she is terminally ill and wants to see you once and apologise to you...

Jitubhai points to the stranger and says - he is Prahlad...Prahlad braks down and falls at Gopi's feet..."Gopi, forgive us... Our actions wrecked your life...but we have been punished for our sins...our conscience pricks us everyday..both of us are suffering from depression..Your mother is dying of cancer and wants to see you before she breathes her last...she is burdened by her wrong deeds and wants to talk to you...it is not for atonement..nothing ever can make good the cruelty you had been subjected to...we don't deserve mercy...but please consider my plea.I strived hard to give her a happy life but failed...please fulfill her last wish and I am ready to accept any punishment from you ...

Gopi stood still...she looked as if she had been struck by a lightning .
