OS: She means the world to me
Ahem walked into the house with anticipation of getting one more glimpse of Gopi. Jigar had wanted to come to check and see what was taking so long, but he had made an excuse of getting water for him to come in the house, but the truth was he wanted to see Gopi. Something was really, really wrong with his sweet wife. He has been racking his brain all day trying to figure out why she was quieter than her usual self. Where did the sparkle in her eyes go, or her sweet shy smile when she was with him, where did that disappeared to?
His intention was to see her but what he heard and saw left him stunned. Did he hear right? Did she just say she might have used all the mangos by mistake to make the milkshake? No way! He knew without a doubt why she is lying and from the look on his mom's face so did his mom. What is going on? What is happening between his mom and Kaki? He has never seen them like this. He waited for his Kaki and Rashi to leave, and then his mom also went into the kitchen. He observed Gopi's face and knew he needed to find out what is going on with her and his family. After all she is the one who made him realize that they were all a family, but first things first.
He went up to his room grabbed the car keys and his wallet and rushed back down. He noticed only Gopi and Meethi were in the kitchen and was glad he didn't have to give any explanation to his mom or anyone else.
"Gopi," he said loud enough for her to hear him, "let's go." She gave him an inquiring look. The pain mingled with her confusion making him curl his hand into a fist. "Don't ask questions, just come with me."
Gopi turned to Meethi. "Meethiben I am going with Ahemji, I will help you when we return." Meethi nodded and Gopi followed Ahem out of the house. Ahem waited for her to settle in the car before starting the car and driving towards the market. He felt her gaze on him several times but he kept quiet and concentrated on the traffic ahead only.
Fifteen minutes later he pulled up in the market. "Gopi we are going to buy mangos now and not wait for morning. Jigar will have his mangos tonight only."
"But Ahemji where will we find mangos in the market, they are not even in season and this late at night how will we be able to find any vendors who are selling mangos?" Gopi asked him with genuine worry and confusion on her face.
Ahem glanced around and realized she had a point. "Where did the mangos that were at home today come from?" He asked her. "Woh Keshav kaka brought them to the house this afternoon." Gopi answered back.
Ahem pulled the car on the road again and drove towards Keshav kaka's store. He brought them mangos every year so Ahem knew exactly which market his store was located in. He pulled up in front of the store and went in with Gopi.
They were greeted by Keshav kaka himself. "Ahem dikra how are you? What can I do for you?"
Ahem and Gopi both folded their hands to greet the older man. "Jai Shree Krishna Kakaji, woh we really loved the mangos you brought over to the house today and wanted to buy more." Ahem explained.
Fifteen minutes later Ahem and Gopi walked out of the store with two-dozen mangos. Gopi was stunned but didn't say anything. She realized her Ahemji had heard everything and felt a small amount of fear in her heart, but realized he wouldn't have come to buy the mangos with her if he thought it was her mistake. She waited until they arrived home to broach the subject.
"Ahemji I-I..." She trailed off when she felt Ahem place his hand on her hand. "Gopi leave it for now, we will talk about it later. Let's take the mangos in the house. First cut some mangos up for Jigar and take it to his room then we can talk." Gopi nodded her head. "Ji." She got out of the car and followed Ahem in the house.
Koki was surprised to see Ahem and Gopi carrying boxes of mangos. "Ahem, Gopi vahu? Where did you go off at this time of the night?" Ahem could feel Gopi tremble in fear and give him a nervous look. "Mom we went to buy mangos at Keshav kaka's shop, no need for Jigar to wait until morning to have mangos." Koki smiled at her son proudly.
"Theek chai," Koki turned to Gopi and realized her vahu was scared, this made her eyes sting once again. She knew her vahu had lied only to save her and Motabhabhi's relationship and she was very proud of her vahu for this. "Gopi vahu there is no need to feel bad for this; I know you didn't make the mistake. Once again you have proved to me that you are the best choice and vahu of Modi family." She saw her vahu take a relieved breath but Gopi was unable to stop the tears. Koki wiped her tears gently and placed her hand on Gopi's head gently.
Koki glanced at her son who was watching Gopi intently and sighed inwardly she knew her son and vahu together will keep the family together she had no worries now. "Gopi vahu cut the mangos for Jigar and take it up to his room, then you also go rest, it has been a long day." Koki bid Ahem and Gopi goodnight and made her way to her room.
Ahem waited for Gopi to cut the mangos for Jigar and then they both walked up to Jigar's room together. To their surprise Hetal was also present in Jigar's room. "Gopi handed the cut mangos to Jigar. "Devarji I am sorry because of me you didn't get to have mangos, but Ahemji took me to the market and we bought more so you wouldn't have to wait until morning for your favorite fruit." Rashi and Hetal looked at Ahem in surprise.
Ahem kept his expression blank. "Kakiji Gopi is right, and I may have had something to do with it also. I distracted Gopi earlier and may be that is why she made the mistake of using all the mangos. I am sorry kakiji from both of us." Hetal firmed her mouth and looked away.
"Bhai, bhabhi, you didn't have to go the market this late at night to buy mangos just for me. I could have waited." Jigar said with a smile. "But thank you so much, both of you, you are always doing something nice for me." Hetal looked at her son sharply and had a thoughtful frown on her face. Rashi twisted her mouth and made a face.
Ahem looked at Rashi. "It was necessary Jigar." He looked at Gopi. "Gopi lets go so Jigar and Rashi can rest." He didn't say anything and waited for Gopi to walk ahead of him.
Once they were in their room Ahem waited for Gopi to change before saying anything. As soon as she came out of the bathroom he moved in front of her. "Gopi now tell me why did you lie downstairs? I know you didn't make the mistake and so does mom. What is going on and why have you been sad all day?"
Gopi did not meet his eyes and kept looking down. "Nahi, it's not like that Ahemji, I think I may have accidently used all the mangos to make the milkshake."
Ahem narrowed his eyes on her. "If that is the case then tell me what is bothering you. Why are you so distracted that you would make a mistake this big?" She continued her silence and Ahem lost his patience.
"Gopi I know something is wrong now tell me before I lose my mind." He took her by the chin and lifted her face to see what she was thinking. He took a sharp breath at seeing her pain and tears on her face. "Please tell me what is wrong? Why are you hurting?"
Gopi knew she couldn't tell him everything but knew she had to tell him something so she told him what has been happening in the house for the past few days and why she took the blame of missing mangos on her head. By the time she finished she couldn't control her sob or tears. She was not only crying for what was happening with the family but also at the fact that Ahem forgot Holi afternoon and what transpired between them.
Ahem felt his heart lurch at her tears and pain, he reached out and slowly took her in his arms to let her cry out her pain. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and felt her hold him just as closely and he was holding her. He felt his eyes sting at his wife's giving nature. She always put others before her and this is why he loved her so much, but he couldn't tell her this either. He had a feeling she was hiding something else from him. Something to do with him and her judging by the odd flashes he had gotten today. No the best way to make her believe he loves her is to show her by protecting her, by supporting her and by being by her side. Now more than words were needed to make her believe that he loved her more than anyone in this world.
