Gopi was feeling warm and safe, encircled in her Ahamji's arms. Aham looked at his blushing wife and softly called her name. Gopi smiled and raised her face to feel a soft drizzle of the rain. As her Ahamji's face came closer and closer to her, she closed her eyes feeling the rain drops cooling her hot face.
"Gopi, Gopi, open your eyes..."
Gopi opened her eyes and saw Aham standing over her with a pichkari. She touched her face to find it wet. Shocked, she sat up and watched in awe a smiling Aham who raised the pichkari to drench her in colored water again. She was stunned.
"Ahamji, what are you doing?" A nervous and confused Gopi jumped out of the bed.
Aham took color from a plate on the table and shouted, "Happy Holi, Gopi." Gopi turned sideways but the color fell on her head and her face. She stood
facing the mirror and marvelled at her Kanhaji and her Ahamji. Her Ahamji had filled her maang with red color on Holi. Dumbfounded, she quickly covered her head with her pallu. Turning his wife around, Aham asked, "Gopi, wouldn't you play Holi with me?"
Gopi hesitated, "But Ahamji, you don't like Holi."
Aham looked in her eyes intesely and smiled, "But you do. Lo, pakro yeh pichkari aur rang do mujhe (here, take this watergun and put color on me)."
Gopi was not sure, "Voh, Ahamji. The room got all dirty with color and even the bed is soaked with water. What if Maanji sees this..."
Giving a loving look to his wife, Aham put the pichkari in her hands, "Don't worry about mom. Main keh raha hoon na. Ab tum meri itni baat bhi nahin manogi
(I am asking you to do it. Now, you won't even listen to me)? Aaj jee bhar kar rang daalo mujh par (Today, put color on me as much as you want). Daalo Gopi daalo (Put it, Gopi, put it)"
Aham staggered backwards as he felt the impact of cold water. He laughed as for the first time in his life, he felt free and truly excited and did he just hear his wife giggle. He opened his eyes to look at his wife.
"Gopi Vau. Aham."
Gopi and Aham turned towards the voice to see all family members at their door with Kokila in the front. They all stared at Gopi putting colors on Aham with varying expressions of shock and awe on their faces. Kokila's face turned red with anger. Hetal and Baa looked happy while Jigar was trying to cover his mouth to hide his laughter. Rashi's mouth flew wide open and she blinked her eyes as if to wake herself up from a dream. Chirag and Parag looked surprised at first, but then smiled. Kokila moved forward in the room and thundered.
"Gopi Vau, what is this? What have you done to the room? Don't you know Aham likes his room to be always neet and tidy? And how dare you throw color at my Aham dikra? Don't you know how much he hates Holi? Tumne aaj mujhe bahut nirash kar diya (I am disappointed in you today), Gopi Vau..."
Gopi trembled with fear, "Voh maanji..."
Aham looked reassuringly at Gopi and then at his mom. He placed himself in between Gopi and Kokila.
"Mom, I colored Gopi first and then told her to put the colors on me."
There was a loud gasp in the room while everyone gaped at Aham. Gopi looked down and prayed to her Kanhaji to protect her Ahamji.
Kokila stared at Aham for a few seconds. She looked at Gopi and brought her pallu over he shoulder.
"Saru. Keep on with it then. When you are done, please come outside and then you can play holi with all of us."
Gopi looked up at her maaji. Aham smiled while everyone else had their mouths wide open and looked ready to fall.
Kokila turned around and said, "Let's all go out side and give these two some privacy."
All stunned started to leave the room slowly with Kokila following. As she came near the door, she turned around.
"And Gopi vahu, don't worry about cleaning the room. I will get Meethi to clean it and put the sofa and the bed mattress outside to dry. Also, you both may need to sleep in the guest bedroom tonight."
Kokoila put her pallu on her shoulder before giving a wink to Aham and closing the doors behind her.
