Before he could say anything, Kinjal appeared from the bathroom. They let out a sigh of relief.
"I'm right here Mummy. I was only getting ready. Why are you screaming so much ?"
"Oh there you are ! Hurry and get dressed. They will be here any minute.", Urmila demanded to her daughter.
"Yes Mummy."
"And you manhoos ! Did you finish all the work I asked you to do?"
"Jee Mami. I just have to make tea."
"Then why are you standing here? Go do some work !" Ahem hurried into the kitchen and began to prepare tea. Just then, someone knocked on the door. Ahem turned the stove on low and went to open the door. His Mama stood smiling in the doorway and Ahem's face lit with happiness.
"Mama !"
"Ahem beta." Jeetu entered with a chuckle. And a small figure stood behind him.
"Ahem bhai!" Garv, his sweet companion, ran up to him excitedly. Ahem ruffled his hair and grinned as he hurried to fix it. Ahem went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of water for Jeetu. He placed the glass on the table after drinking it. Then, he reached into his pocket and held out money to Ahem.
"I want you to have this money. Keep it just in case.". After his Mama insisted many times, Ahem finally took the money. Suddenly, his Mami came into the living room.
"What's going on here? Instead of saving money for our daughter's wedding, you are giving charity to this manhoos." Garv watched the cruel woman hatefully. If looks could kill, Urmila would have dropped dead on the floor instantly.
"Urmila, Ahem does so much work for us and never asks for anything."
"What work? First you brought Ahem home and now Garv. This house has turned into an orphanage home ! Think about our daughter Kinjal too. If we don't have enough money, she will never be able to marry into a nice family. That's okay. Don't do anything. I have to do everything around here." She did her famous "hmph" at the end of her speech and left Ahem with a heavy heart. He felt like an unwanted piece of trash now and he could not stand it. He would save up money from his paycheck and move out soon. He was yanked out of his thoughts as someone tugged on his kurta.
"Ahem bhai, don't listen to her." Ahem just gazed at Garv and smiled weakly. He remembered the tea and rushed to the kitchen.
"Aaahh!!", Rashi screamed as she fell flat on her bottom. Gopi shook her head at her cousin and helped her to stand up. She yelled for her secretary, who came running upon hearing her boss's frightening voice.
"Yes Ma'am?"
"Where the heck is the janitor? There is water all over this floor." The petite girl's body shook at Gopi's harsh tone and she stuttered several times as she spoke.
"H-..He came today but then he be- b- ..became sick so he left."
"What about the other janitor?"
"The other janitor called in saying he had to stay home today because the boy's side is coming to see his sister." Gopi's eyes widened with anger. Rashi didn't dare utter a word and watched the scene silently.
"These damn janitors !! Everyone wants to take a holiday at the same time! If you want to keep your job, I suggest you find a replacement soon. For now, clean this mess up."
"Yes Ma'am." Gopi's cell phone rang loudly. It was her Mom, Kokila Parag Modi.
Jai Shree Krishna Mom.
Jai Shree Krishna. I want you to come home right now Gopi.
Right now Mom? But why? Is everything okay?
Everything is fine. Just come home.
Jee Mom. I'm coming.
"Mom has told me to come home Rashi. I can't go with you. Sorry." Rashi whined but she knew that Gopi would never disobey her mother so she gave up. Gopi and Rashi headed home. As Gopi drove home, a young wasted man came right in front of her car.
"Gopi !!Watch out !!!!!!!", Rashi yelled. But it was too late.
Urmila shrieked with joy when she heard the parents say they liked Kinjal. Her daughter was finally to be married, and that too into a rich, well-known family.
"This calls for sweets. Ahem ! Bring sweets for everyone." Ahem stood there gazing at his Mami nervously. Jigar had not returned still. Ahem feared that he was roaming about in the streets with a beer bottle in his hand; he hoped he did not come home in a drunken state, if ,infact, his guess was true.
"That's okay. No need to trouble yourself for us. We have to go now anyway.", Dhaval spoke up. Ahem thanked him in his mind for saving them from embarrassment. He liked Dhaval. He was kind-hearted and perfect for Kinjal. Ahem was sure he would keep her happy. The guests, their future in-laws, were taking leave when the phone rang. Ahem went to pick it up and later wished he hadn't.

They both paused as they recognized each other's voices. It was Gopi Modi, the owner of Modi Industries--his workplace. He would have recognized her voice anywhere as he had been paying close attention to everything about her lately.
Gopi realized it was the janitor's number that she had found in the man's cell phone.
Ahem, is that you?
Yes Ma'am. Why did you call me?
Um, I found your number in this man's cell phone. I'm guessing the man is a family member of yours.
Ahem's heart stopped. It couldn't be, he told himself. He prayed to Kanhaji and hoped nothing happened to Jigar.
Are you there? Hello?
Yes...Yes, Ma'am. Is he-...? I mean, ..Is...everything okay?
No Ahem. I'm sorry to inform you. I accidentally hit him with my car when he came in front of me.I couldn't stop my car in time. I'm so sorry. He is in the hospital.
