Part 2
Gopi looked at her reflection staring back at her in the glass window. She could not believe what she had become. She wore black slacks,a cream button down shirt underneath a figure -fitting dark brown blazer to show all her curves,a reminder of her femininity, and black dress shoes with 3 inch heels. Kokila was disappointed when she had a girl instead of a boy but resolved the issue by taking away her daughter's childhood as a girl. Gopi was forbidden to do what girls her age did such as going to sleepovers, birthday parties, or playing with barbie dolls. Gopi never complained because she understood her mother's reasons for forcing her to be independent. She had learned from her own mistakes by marrying a careless, useless man and decided that her daughter would not need the support of a man like she did. She had been trained to concentrate on nothing but school and growing up to be a successful, young business woman. She was brought up as a son by her mom and so a son she had become. She took the responsibility of what a man of the household should and balanced college in one hand and a job on the other. Soon, she had finished earning the degrees needed for her to be a business woman and Chirag kaka asked her to work in the family business. With her mom's permission, he taught her everything she needed to know and after years of training, was able to take care of 50% of the business. She felt a warm hand on her shoulder and snapped out of her thoughts. She straightened up and put on her emotion-less expression on her face again.
"Gopi, is everything alright with you? You seem very stressed these days."
"I'm fine." She lied.
"Uh huh. Sure you are.I think you need a nice, relaxing day with your sister." Gopi walked to her table, sat down on the big seat and started typing away on her laptop. Rashi's idea of a nice, relaxing day meant a day at the spa or at the shopping mall. She was an example of the type of woman her mother did not want Gopi to turn into. She went to the beauty parlor once every month, shopped for buying new clothes that she would only wear on one occasion, and depended on her family to provide for all her financial needs .
"I really don't have time for that Rashi."
"Oh come on Gopi. Please ! Please please please! I'm so bored" Her cousin sister seemed so lonely to her as she whined on and on. She had always been busy with one thing or another and never spent any time with her. So, she surrendered to her and agreed to go out with her. Watching Rashi's face light up excitedly at just her one "Yes" made her smile a little. She wiped it off the smile as soon as it appeared. As they walked out the office, Gopi ordered her secretary to cancel all the meetings held today and they both headed out of the building to face a day of enjoyment.
"And don't forget to buy some sweets !!", Urmila said urgently. She was running all over the house in panic. The guests were going to be at their house in an hour and they were not prepared.
"Yes mummy, I'll get it. You've told me a hundred times already !," With that, Jigar stepped out of the door but stopped when he heard Ahem calling him.
" Jigar ! Wait, here. Get the sweets from a nice store." He held out the money to him.
"It's okay. I'll get it from my own money. I'm not taking any money from my younger cousin." Ahem smiled at Jigar and put the money back in his pocket.
"As you wish. Jai Shri Krishna."
"Jai Shri Krishna." Ahem watched Jigar leave then returned back into the house and continued dusting.
"Aheeemmm !!Go make tea so that Kinjal can serve it", his Mami shouted.
"Jee Mami" Ahem hurried to finish cleaning up and hoped that they would like Kinjal. Their family's only wish at the moment was to see her be happily married. Unfortunately, every marriage offer came with a price they could not pay, dowry, causing them all to be worried for Kinjal's future. He shook off his thoughts and went to make tea. He had learned not only to clean, but also cook since his Mami refused to do any work. He obeyed whatever she demanded of him because he was grateful to her and also his Mamaji's generosity and did not wish to be a burden. They had been taking care of him ever since he was a child and he was forever indebted to them. He was bolted back to earth when he heard his Mami yelling in horror.
"Hai Mara Thakurji !! Kinjal !! Kinjal!!" He rushed to her side and became even more concerned when he saw her agitated face.
"What's wrong, Mami?"
"Kinjal..Oh God..Kinjal..Sh- ...She's gone !"
