Part 8 ' Indecision
Hearts are beating in friendship and warms. They understand each other without words but there are also hearts which misinterpret, which doubt yet again, which will destroy their chance of happiness, if thoughtless. But hope is there but in need of patience.
It had been a hard night for Gopi. Playing the jolly mother without a worry for Sanju had been very difficult for her and without Julia's help impossible. Luckily Toni had stayed till after dinner as well. Julia suspected that he only did this to annoy her and to get a free meal but Gopi knew it better. Because after all the cookies had been backed and decorated they had decided to play a game in the living room to pass the time till dinner. Sanju and Julia had run to be the first one there and be able to decide which game to play as it was costume in their small family. Toni had stayed back with Gopi. She had been surprised about this at first but not for long. "Gopi geht es dir gut? (are you alright?) You look worried for quite a while now and that is worrying me because it isn't at all like you." Shocked Gopi's head snapped up and she starred at the man before her with wide frightened eyes. Dread was spreading within her. 'Did he see my true feelings so easily? Did Sanju notice as well? Oh please Khanaji don't let her have notice.' Toni saw the colour leave Gopi's cheeks and quickly stepped forward, taking hold of her shoulders. "Don't worry Gopi, I don't think Sanju noticed anything at all" he said guessing her inner fears right. With wonder reflecting in her eyes Gopi had looked up into Toni's eyes. This made him laugh. "I know Julia thinks I am only a big idiot but I thought at least you knew better." "Woh.. no.. I mean I do.. erm", Gopi stammered hurriedly but this made Toni only laugh louder and her understand why Julia found him irritating at times. "Gopi I am your friend and I am worried for you and want you to be happy so if there is anything you want to talk about or need help with, you tell me and I will be there for you" Toni said seriously after a moment and looked deep into her eyes. A warm smile spread over Gopi's face and she nodded 'yes' and thanked him for being such a good friend. In answering Toni pulled her into a friendly hug, which Gopi returned after a small moment of hesitations. Not knowing that someone was seeing them from outside the house.
After that they had gone to the living room to see which game they would be forced or allowed to play. But as they stepped into the living room they were witness to an epic fight going on. Small against tall; cheeky against naughty; niece against Masi; Sanju against Julia and the result wasn't yet predictable. "I was first here Masi and not you." Sanju was saying angrily while stamping with her feet. "Oh little missy you weren't first because I was. And you didn't seriously stamp with your feet right now, did you? Only silly girls do that" Julia was saying bending down to her with her fist placed at her hips. "I am no silly girl!! I was first, I was!" "Yes you are and I was" "No I am not Masi and I was first" "Oh Sanju at the time I reached the living room you hadn't even left the kitchen yet" "So did" "Liar" Sanju's mouth was forming a big 'O' as she screamed "I am no liar!! You ... you meany!!" "Meany? Cheeky monkey I think you forgot, who you are talking to" "No I didn't!! You said I am a liar and that is not true and mean. I am going to tell on you and I was FIRST" Sanju shouted. "Oh you won't and I was" "No I" "No I" and on the fighting went. Gopi and Toni stood there for five minutes and moved their head from left to right as if watching a tennis match while listening to the tussle. First shocked and then with more and more amusement until they couldn't keep the laughter from coming out. They started to laugh so loud that even the two bickerers were distracted from their own entertainment. Both looked at Gopi and Toni first shocked and a little guilty and then more and more annoyed. "Ma stop laughing" Sanju said in a whiny voice while pulling her mum's arm. "Masi is being mean. I was first here so I can decide what to play" "That is not true Sanjana" Julia was saying and the epic fight started again just this time an innocent was in the middle. It took Gopi 15 minutes to defuse the situation and come to a conclusion on what to play and the once to blame for it were Sanju, Julia and Toni as well or better especially. He couldn't stop himself and had fanned the flames every time Gopi nearly had them extinguished. However much she moaned about it afterwards to them, she had to admit that it had taken her mind of her husband and what his coming here will mean for her and Sanju's future.
After that the evening had been filled with laughter, teasing and anger. They had played 'Mensch aergere dich nicht' (People don't be angry (Ludo)) as it is Sanju's favourite game and she had been first in the living room. In the end Toni had won and hadn't been shy about his happiness, pissing off Julia, who was very ambitious. She accused him of cheating but that could not be proven. Frustrated Julia had not spoken one word with him over diner and had ignored him as he said goodbye to her also. Later Sanju had been made ready to bed and put to sleep by her Maa and Masi. For a long time Gopi sat next to her sleeping daughter, while she watch her chest rise and fall with each life giving breath and thought about what all happened today. But she could not sit there for the whole night. She had promised Julia an explanation and she will have to keep it, Julia would not give her any other choice. So she got up and walked down to the atelier, knowing that Julia would be there working on her next masterpiece.
"Finally" Julia grumbled while getting up from her 'thinking chair' as she called it, whipping her hands clean on a cloth. "I had half a mind to go up there and drag you out of Sanju's room. You promised to tell me what happen and I want the answer now", Julia said decidedly not allowing any argument about it. Heaving a heavy sigh Gopi said "I know. That is why I came." She walked to the couch on the other side of the atelier and set down on it, shortly after followed by Julia, who sat next to her and took her hand into hers, which were still stained with some blue colour, the colour of hope. "Okay and now tell me what happened in the afternoon, who called and who did you meet outside?" Julia asked now seriously but also gently. Gopi however was surprised and could only stare at her for a moment. "Meet? Outside? How..?" she asked stammering. "Oh please Engelchen (Engel=Angel and 'chen is a belittlement) that was really obvious", Julia said rolling her eyes. "Ahem ji" Gopi whispered while looking at their hands not daring to look Julia in the eye. "Your husband?", Julia asked and Gopi nodded. She could hear the strain in Julia's voice. Julia had always been very angry with Ahem for doing what he did to her Engelchen. Never hiding this fact from Gopi either, even though it had let to a few fights between the friends. "Okay... and?" Julia asked after composing her thoughts and calming herself down enough to listen to Gopi coolly. Gopi told her how he had called her and not said anything at first and how she had been shocked after hearing his voice and seeing him standing outside. Also telling her how she ran to him, how she had felt to be close to him again, feel his warmth again and how he asked her to come back to him. "And what did you answer?" Julia asked gently after Gopi had fallen silent for a few minutes. "I said no. I said I couldn't trust him anymore and asked him to leave but he didn't want to but I insisted and just ran away." Tears were welling up again and Gopi started to sob badly. "B-b-but I can't d-do-do that. I-I have to ta-talk to him again. But how? And-and what?" she was asking in despair. Julia looked at her sadly and took the smaller woman into her arms pressing her to herself strongly. "Sshh", she said soothingly while rubbing Gopi's back. "This is a big decision dear. You will have to think about it and you will have to talk it out with him. However not right away. He can't just come and expect you to leave everything right then and there. This will need time to mend or to end. Either way it will not be decided today or tomorrow. Take some time to think it over Gopi and don't force anything now. It could lead to a wrong decision or the right decision at the wrong time. I am with you in whatever decision you are going to take. I will always be part of your family and Sanju will always be my niece." Julia said comfortingly. "Okay?" she asked then, pulling away from Gopi to look into her eyes. Gopi smiled at her through teary eyes. Julia was right she won't have to decide this right then and there. She could take all the time she needed and Ahemji had to just understand this. "Thank you Julia" Gopi said sweetly hugging her friend again. "I am feeling much better now."
Later on Gopi and Julia set in their living room already clothed for bed cuddled under a warm blanket with a cup of tea as it was their little routine to end the day. They had talked about the hospital appointment for Sanju in three days time. Dr. Sebald had warned of the importance of the next appointment for the success of the new treatment. However Gopi had an important business appointment a little earlier and wouldn't be able to take Sanju to the appointment. "Mach dir keine Sorgen Gopi (Don't worry) Ich werde Sanju ins Krankenhause fahren und du triffst uns dann dort (I will take Sanju to the hospital and you can meet us there)" Julia said reassuringly and smiled. However as she saw Gopi's doubting look her expression changed quickly into an angry one. "What you don't believe me? I am not that irresponsible as you take me for. Unbelievable!!" pouting Julia fell back into the sofa pulling her knees to her chest and looked the other way. "I am sorry Julia" Gopi started to say and tried to look into the other woman's eyes but Julia averted them further. "Come on please Julia.." Gopi tried again and put a hand on her friends arm trying to make her turn in her direction but Julia just shrugged her hands off and kept on starring at the wall. So Gopi stood up and walked around the couch and kneeled down before her, grabbing her earlobes with her hands and made an apologetic face. "Entschuldige (Sorry)" she said in her cutest voice and looked up at Julia with puppy dog eyes. Julia wasn't able to keep a straight face and laughed out loud. "Okay, okay Ich vergebe dir (I forgive you)" "Good because what would I do without you" "Oh stop your buttering I have forgiven you and forgot about the incident already" Julia said laughing again. Gopi laughed as well and set next to Julia again but then her smile faded and she looked again worried. This mood change did not go unnoticed by Julia she turned to Gopi and asked her gently "You are still thinking about what happened today, right? I told you this is something you can't resolve now and not alone so no point working yourself up about it. Just calm down and stop thinking about it for tonight" Gopi smiled at her friend sadly and said "I know you are right but I should decide what my next step will be. Ahem ji will not be able to stay in Germany for long so I do have to meet him tomorrow or the day after that again and I should know what I want to say or what I want him to do. He said he loved Sanju but he does not know her and he does not know me my new me and before he doesn't how can I agree to go back to India with him. But how can he come to know me and our daughter, if I cannot let him meet her before I am sure that he will not abandon us again? How, Julia?" Gopi was asking rapidly looking pleadingly at her. "What can I do?" she asked in a broken voice. Sadly Julia looked at Gopi for a second then she put her cup down on the table and also took Gopi's cup to put it next to hers before she pulled the smaller woman in her arms and told her to calm down again. "There is an easy way to achieve that" Julia said and explained her idea to Gopi, who listened and nodded in agreement. "Let me do that" Gopi said looking more confident now.
Koki noticed how absentminded Ahem was but she did not think that much about it. She was too preoccupied with the thought of her reunion with her Gopi vahu. 'How will it go? And how will I make her come back to India? I know it won't be easy and I will have to be clever about it and make Ahem realise that he can't expect Gopi just to come back because he wants her too. He has to work for this otherwise their relationship will again be unbalanced. But I can't allow that to happen again' Kokila thought determined pulling her pallu to the front.
Ahem on the other hand was thinking about yesterday. All the emotions which had flooded through his body while he first sat eyes on his beautiful baby girl, he remembered her smiling and laughing face and the way she had hugged Gopi tightly. Gopi's face came back before his inner eyes. Her lovely eyes, which had sparkled with tears, passion and heartbreak, then the feeling of her warm and soft lips pressed against his was brought back to his mind and the way her delicate body had felt pressed against his own. A small smile spread over his face but then it was whipped away when he remembered how he has seen her in another man's arms as he had come back later that evening unable to stay away longer. Rage was spreading through him but under it another feeling was growing bigger and stronger with each passing heartbeat. If he would have been brave enough to look deeper within him he would have recognised it as despair. But he wasn't and so the rage overwhelmed his whole thinking making it impossible for him to listen to reason as Kokila was stepping towards him and talked about the best way to approach Gopi. She told him that they will have to show Gopi that they are sorry about what happened before but that they want to make up for it that they want to have her back and will never sent her or Sanjana away again. "We have to be understanding to the fact that Gopi has built a life here for Sanjana and herself. That she has made new relationship and that we can't just expect her to break them just like that" Kokila was just saying. "No mum!" Ahem interrupted her because he couldn't stand her talking about respecting the new relationship of Gopi. Again he had had a flashback of Gopi in the arm of the other man. "No I will not respect any new relationship of hers. She is my wife and Sanjana is my dikri and their rightful place is by my side and this is what is going to happen!" Ahem side leaving no doubt about his seriousness regarding these statements. "Let us go to her shop and make her change her mind. I had enough of this rubbish" and with saying that he grabbed his jacket and walked out the door. 'Oh Krishna Bhagwan please prevent my son from making a grave mistake' Kokila prayed silently before following her son outside.
They reached the shop within 20 minutes of walk in which Kokila had tried in vain to placate her son so that he wouldn't destroy his and their last hope to reunite their family. With a dreading feeling Kokila stepped into the shop after Ahem and started to look around but was then got distracted by the sight of her beloved bahu standing behind the counter looking at a small computer screen. She hadn't yet noticed their entry and was still busy with her work. A tear slit silently down her cheek and a sad and yet joyful smile was stretching Kokila's lips. She had missed this quite, innocent and lovely girl she had started to see as her daughter rather than her daughter in law. But then she noticed Ahem walking towards her so purposely his whole body being tensed and the previous feeling of dread was replaced by a feeling of doom. Just then Gopi looked up and seeing Ahem and the look on his face made all colour and the welcoming smile leave her face instantly. Kokila saw Gopi taking one step back and grabbing hold on the corner of a small chest behind the counter. However then her eyes, which were trying to evade Ahem's anger, fell on to Kokila. Surprised her mouth opened but then after a second a warm happy smile spread over her face as she looked at her Maaji. "Maaji you?" she whispered and was going to step towards her when she was pulled in the opposite direction by a large hand on her arm. Surprised she looked around straight into Ahem's scorching eyes. "Don't ignore me Gopi" he shouted and shook her fiercely. Frightened Gopi tried to free herself from his grip and Kokila also tried to get Ahem to stop. But he was not listening to anything. Again the picture of Gopi in the arms of another man came back to him and had now thrown him in a violent fit without reason. "I have enough of this drama of yours. You and my daughter Sanjana are going to come back with me and mum to India and that is it. I am not going to discuss this any longer. Pack all you need and then we are taking the next flight back!" Ahem said threateningly pulling Gopi even closer to him. However what he did not expect was that his delicate wife had developed some guts herself. After hearing him just ordering her to break up her life here anger was bubbling up in her inside as well. With a bust of energy she freed herself from his grip and screamed "No. I will not." Stepping back from the totally surprised Ahem even Kokila was lost for word. She was just going to order Ahem to let Gopi go, when Gopi had freed herself. Now both, mother and son, starred surprised at Gopi, who wasn't looking like her usual timid self. "You can't make me come back with you! This is my decision and don't even think about just taking Sanjana with you. I am her mother and my name is the only name standing on her birth certificate. You have no rights what so ever over her. So don't you dare thinking differently. In front of the law she is my daughter and mine alone. Got it? You can't just come here and order me to come with you after all you did. You can't and I won't let you. You don't know me anymore and you especially do not now my daughter and before you don't know us nothing is going to happen. Got it?" Gopi said. She did not shout, did not even raise her voice but the seriousness of her words could not have been shown clearer. Ahem could only stare in shock but on Kokila's face a small smile spread. Her daughter had learnt to talk and defend her rights herself and was now finally a perfect match for her son. Kokila could see Gopi's love for Ahem clearly in her eyes but also the determination to not be pushed about again and to protect her daughter. Today Kokila was a proud mother.
So what will happen next? Will Ahem be able to calm down and listen to what Gopi said or will he blow up once more and finally break this relationship forever?
