Part 5 - Revelation
Hearts are beating in despair, shame and self-reproach. The past threw them into despair, the present has then withering through its insufferableness and hurt and the future is hidden in uncertainty, shame and fear. Will the two separated hearts beat in union once again or stay separated forever?
He had tried so hard to change his bhabi's mind about not contacting Ahem but no matter what he said she stayed true to her decision. A decision he could understand very well. But still he had hoped against hope that she would change her mind. Every day after the business meetings had been over he had called her or visited her at her shop but it didn't help. He even expanded his stay in Germany for a few days not given up. But now that the contact was finalised and signed there was no reason or excuse left for him to expand it even more. So he had boarded the first train on his way back to India. Now sitting in the plane back to India he had time to wonder about the task, which was ahead of him. 'I have to tell bhai about Gopi and Sanju.', he decided for the umpteenth time. 'But how? I can't just go there and say "By the way bhai you got the sweetest and cutest girl on this planet as a daughter." But what else can I say? I so wished bhabi would have changed her mind. I get why she didn't it would have been hard for her as well but still how can I tell him?' Jigar went on wondering in misery.
On went his flight and he still was not sure what to do after the stewardess had given him his lunch. 'Should I tell bhai first about it or should I tell someone of the elders first?' he had gone on to wonder. 'But who of the elders should I ask? This is just such a big mess. Maybe I should speak to Kaki first or mum or baa or kaka or ... Rashi!!! Rashi. Yes of course why didn't I think of this before? She must have known about babhi's pregnancy and whereabouts. So why didn't she tell me? Is she again trying to come inbetween bhai and bhabi? Up to her old tricks and drama?' he was wondering getting angrier with each question. 'I can't believe this. She broke my trust again just as I was getting closer to her again!!' he cried out silently and went on to cursing himself for nearly falling in her trap again. 'But I won't this time!!' he decided and sent Rashi an emailed to meet him at a small cafe near the airport. He never stopped to wonder, if Rashi might be innocent and didn't know herself that she had become a Mami to a sweet little girl. No his opinion was made at the second the first doubts had spread through his mind.
Finally he landed in India. Impatiently he went through the pass control and collected his luggage, which seemed to take hours to arrive whereby it was only a few minutes. Because Ahem and Chirag were busy no one was there to pick him up from the airport. They had all agreed for Jigar to take a cab back home before he departed from Germany. But this was ideal for Jigar's plan to meet with Rashi before going home to face his bhai and family. Jigar was very irritated as he finally was able to leave the airport. Luckily he got a cap quickly and not even 15 minutes later the cab driver was parking outside of the cafe he had arranged to meet with Rashi.
Rashi was already waiting in the cafe totally excited about the fact that Jigar had called her here to see her right after he came back from his business trip. She was over the moon with joy to see him again. The three years in which they now were living in separation had shown her just how good her husband was and how much she missed him, when she couldn't see him for a long while. That Jigar had called her here must mean that he feels the same. 'Maybe he finally has forgiven me for the way I got him to marry me.' She was thinking while looking down at her folded hands, which were getting a little sweaty because of her nervousness. Just then she heard the little door bell ring and looked up to see Jigar striding towards her. A smile spread over her face at first but then she saw his angry expression and the smile left her face as fast as it had come. 'Why is he starring at me so angrily?' Rashi was wondering in confusing.
Jigar stopped shortly in front a stunted looking Rashi. He had seen her happy smile at first and knew that she has noticed his mood by the way it had left her beautiful face. Again her presence made his heart clench and still he couldn't say for sure if it was out of happiness and love or out of hurt and pain, because she had betrayed him. However today he would rather say the last. "Jai shri Krishna Jigarji" Rashi spoke and got him out of his thoughts. Her voice had been a little shaky but her confidence and strength could be heard out of it as well. Jigar didn't reply he sat down on the chair opposite her and glared at her for a minute before he spoke. 'He definitely is angry with me. But what does he think I have done now? It couldn't be..!!' Rashi was thinking while she was waiting for Jigar to say something.
"I can't believe that you would sink even lower then you have already Rashi" Jigar nearly spate at her while he had a look of total disgust on his face. "What do you mean Jigarji? What have I done now?" Rashi replied in a hurt and defensive voice. "Oh stop your pretending and drama Rashi. I can't believe I nearly fall for it again. But never again. How could you keep this news quiet? Do you hate Gopi bhabi that much? I am so disgusted with you right now" Jigar interrupted Rashi and went on venting his anger. Tears started to fall down Rashi cheeks and she looked at him with hurt and confusion in her eyes. This made him falter for a second but then he remembered the tears falling down his bhabi's eyes and the laughing little whirlwind, which is his niece. "Gopi? What do you mean what have I done to Gopi? What should I know? I haven't seen or spoken to her since Kakiji was poisoned." Rashi, who had found her voice again, asked him aggravated. It was true Rashi hadn't seen Gopi since that day and had no idea what Jigar was talking about. "Oh so you didn't know that bhabi was pregnant and tha.." Jigar went on but was interrupted by Rashi sudden outcry "Pregnant? Gopi was pregnant? But how? When? Why? I mean if she was pregnant then ... then I must be an aunt by now!! Oh my god!" Now Jigar was totally at a loss. He didn't know what to think, what to believe and what to do. 'She looks genuine surprised and shocked but that might just be a drama' he thought but a seed of doubt had started to grow in his mind. "You didn't know about it? Oh please don't lie to me Rashi. I have had enough of your lies" Jigar said annoyed. "I had no idea Jigarji!" Rashi shouted and jumped up from her chair, slammed her hands on the table and leaned over the table towards him with an angry expression. "And now stop your tirade and tell me how Gopi is and if I am a mami or not! Tell me!" she commended him. Forgetting in her aggravation where she was.
"She lives ... She lives in Germany" Jigar stammered shocked by Rashi's outburst. However he started to really believe in her words now. "Together with a friend of her, who is called Julia, and her and bhai's daughter. A little girl of three years, who is called Sanjana, and seems to be a fun loving whirlwind" Jigar went on and was surprised upon the fresh tears he saw in Rashi's eyes. "You really didn't know?" he asked in wonder and felt immediately guilty about his accusations and insults. "No I didn't!" Rashi said decisively but did not go on blaming him for his false accusation, which were born out of his low trust in her. That was not only because she had other more important things to say but also due to the fact that he had all the reasons not to trust her. So she went on saying "But where are they now? Why didn't you bring them with you?" "Bhabi refused to come back and didn't even let me meet Sanju" "What? Why?" Rashi called out in astonishment.
So Jigar went on to tell her, what happened in Germany and all he could remember from his conversations with Gopi. "You see she won't come back, if it is not bhai, who comes and asked her to return and even that is not for sure. I can understand her but Sanju needs her family and Gopi needs them as well and bhai needs them." Jigar ended his narration. "So what are you going to do now?" "I don't know. I think I will tell Ahem and the family but I just don't know how to do it." Rashi nodded. She understood exactly why Jigar was so hesitant to tell Ahem and the rest of the family. That would be a shock for them and Ahem wouldn't take it well. 'I still can't believe it. How did she manage to build up an existent on her own, with a little child in a foreign county? I sure as ... couldn't have done it' Rashi was thinking. She and Jigar discussed the best way to tell Ahem about the matter for a while until they settled on a bold plan devised mainly by Rashi. "Are you sure that is the best way forward?" Jigar asked for the umpteenth time. "Yes Jigarji. Or do you have a better idea?" No he didn't and so he just nodded his hand. They separated in front of the cafe. Rashi wished Jigar good luck and waved after him as he was being taken away by a cab, which would bring him home. 'Gopi ke khanaji please help Jigarji' she sent a silent prayer to the sky and then went home still shocked about the news.
Jigar was a nervous wreck by the time the cab pulled up to Modi Mansion. He knew that Rashi's plan would properly ensure his survival but he still was worried that he either couldn't pull it off or that Ahem might snap out of tension and kill him anyway. So with a feeling of doom he was walking to the front door as if it was his scaffold. Hesitantly he moved his arm to ring the bell. However before he rang it he took a deep breath and composed his face to a calm and determined expression or what he hoped to be one. Then he rang the door and waited for someone to open it. To his luck or misfortune, he wasn't sure as what he should take it; it was Ahem, who opened the door for him. But the rest of the family had gathered in the hall to wait for his arrival. His mum came running towards him and asked him how he was. After they all greeted each other and Jigar had assured his mum that he was fine and that the journey went well it was time to put Rashi's plan into action. 'Khanaji please protect me and give me the strength to go through with it.' he sent a last silent prayer to god thinking that it could be his last prayer he added the plea to protect his family in future as well. Then he turned to Ahem and his nearly certain death.
"Do you know who I met in Germany bhai?" he asked Ahem innocently. "Well our business partners of course Jigar and now stop this rubbish and tell me in detail how it went" Ahem commented. 'Tell him in detail? How much more detail does he need? I already sent him about a 100 detailed emails and talked hours with him over the phone. No concentrate Jigar!' he scolded himself. "Not now bhai." He said and before Ahem could explode as he soon was going to do judging by the dark look, which had spread over his face, Jigar went on. "I met bhabi there. She is living in a small village near Passau together with a young woman and your and her daughter Sanjana." This was a total blow to Ahem. Shock crossed his face and he starred disbelieving at Jigar. First he felt rage rising in him as Jigar dared to speak about her but as he went on and suddenly talked about his daughter this feeling was replaced by disbelieve, pain, shame and anguish. "What?" he heard himself stammer and also heard his family members say. As he turned his head a little he could see that his mum and kaki had sank back onto the couch with a hand in front of their mouth. His father and kaka didn't take the news any better. "Ji bhai. Your's and bhabi's daughter and my niece. And do you know what? I wasn't allowed to meet my niece because of you. Bhabi refused to come back home with Sanju, because you told her to stay away. But I am telling you now I don't care, how you do it but I demand that you get her to come back home with Sanju. My birthday is in two months time and I want a self made picture from my niece as a birthday present and the only way I am getting it is for you to go there and get bhabi to come back. So what are you waiting for? Get a move on! I want to get to know my niece and I want it now!" he ranted at his bhai keeping an annoyed and commending look on his face, while he felt like fainting in the inside. However what his said was true. He was telling Ahem what he wanted. "I already booked a flight for you bhai. You are going to Germany tomorrow. I also booked a hotel room in Passau for you so go and get your packing sorted" Jigar ordered. "What?" Ahem asked again still to stunt to react or think straight. "Packing bhai, packing!!" Jigar shouted in played annoyance. And unbelievable as it was Ahem did in fact turn and went up the stairs to his room. As soon as he was out of Jigar's sight Jigar sank down on the couch opposite his mum and kaki and breathed a sigh of relieve. 'Survived! I have to thank Rashi for coming up with this plan' he thought. However it was not over for him yet. His kaki, dad, mum and kaka wanted to know exactly what had happened and what he knew about their granddaughter. So he told them and remembering the pictures he took with his mobile he gave it around so that all of them could have a look at this cute little human being listening to the name Sanju.
Ahem was sitting upstairs on his bed with his elbows on his legs and his head held in his hands. Anguish was cursing through his body. 'What have I done? How could I do that?' he was asking himself again and again without finding a satisfying answer. 'I no we have a daughter' he then thought in disbelieve. 'I am a father.' And for the first time in years tears were brimming in his eyes. Tears of anguish, joy, shame, worry and hope. 'I will bring them back home' he silently swore to himself. Looking up he saw his mum in front of him. She looked down at him for a moment without saying anything then she turned to his wardrobe and started to get clothes out for him to take on his journey. Kokila had come here to make sure that Ahem would go to Germany, if she had to ordering him to go and get her daughter and granddaughter home she would have, but she didn't have to. Her son was determined to get his family home, she had seen it in his eyes. "Mum?" Ahem called out to her in a broken voice. "You will bring Gopi vahu and Sanju back home Ahem, I know you will. What lies in the past we cannot change the only thing we can do is to create the best possible future for them both" she told him and thereby answered to his worries. He had been wondering how he could face Gopi after all he put her through. But his mum was right he could not change the past and had to try to make up for it in the future.
And so Ahem Modi was sitting in a plane to Germany early next day. But will he be able to put the shattered heart together again and make it beat in joy or will it stay shattered and closed to him forever?
