An Unfortunate Accident...or Punishment?
The get-together finally ended and not surprisingly, Aham was the first to leave along with Jigar. He has had enough of all those stares at Gopi. He did not like it. Sure after the dance Gopi was more like herself but the wretched businessmen still did not keep their dirty gaze off her. Aham took off his coat and threw it roughly in the backseat. He was so annoyed and what was annoying him further was Gopi's presence. His life would have been much easier if Gopi did not come into the picture. Although he finally agreed that he had been living in denial when he thought he could have a happy life with Anita, but Gopi was a different case altogether. What's up with her? Why is she so giving? Why on earth does she love me. He then came to realise that she did not love him because he was lovable. She loved him because he was her husband and she was suppose to love him. So instead of him, if for instance the idiot businessman who dared to dance with her, with whom he was going to settle scores with soon was her husband, she would love him too. That was just pathetic. So now the conclusion he came up with was, he was not lovable. Having thought that, his anger rose.
Gopi had just closed the door of the car when Aham zoomed off. She knew he was furious. But she did not know why. She wanted to ask him but looking at him right now, that was probably not a good idea. For some reason, Gopi was not really afraid. She may illiterate but she knew his anger had more to do with something that happened in the party than her. But the way he was driving right now was very scary. She just held on to her seat and prayed.
As for Aham, he was squeezing the steering wheel and pressing on the accelerator as hard as he could in an attempt to calm himself down. This idiot of his wife. What the hell did they see in her? They, well only a few looked at her like she was something to eat. That was bad enough. Only he had a right to look at her that way, he was the husband. Damn these thoughts! Again all this husband-wife bullshit is filling his head. He looked over at his wife, wife for name's sake. She too glanced at him as he scowled at her. She looked down. Just then he saw a flash of headlights and heard Gopi's scream.
The lorry banged into Aham's car which swerved off the road and was overturned due to the impact. Gopi somehow was saved except for a few minor scratches but Aham was a bloody mess.
Gopi looked around and saw an opening. She quickly got out. The first and only thing that came into her mind was her Ahamji. She quickly looked into the overturned car. He was not there but there was a lot of blood. If it wasn't hers then it must be her Ahamji's. She was worried, extremely worried and started looking around frantically. Just as the tears were brimming over, she saw a figure on the road, a pool of blood forming around it. She let out a scream and ran towards her Ahamji. She dropped to her knees beside her husband and quickly placed his bleeding head on her lap. Even his shirt was torn. Gopi touched his cheek and found that there were scratches there as well. Aham was semi-concious and groaned in pain.
Gopi was just going to get up and get help when Jigar's car pulled up beside her. Jigar and Rashi imeediately got out and placed Aham in the backseat.
Gopi tried her best to clean whatever she could but there was so
much blood. In the backseat Aham clung onto Gopi with his head on her chest. All Gopi could do was cradle his head and whisper reassuring words to him.
"Gopi, it's very painful," Aham whispered as he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead into Gopi's neck.
Gopi just hugged him tighter and patted him, still whispering reassuring words despite her tears. She prayed for the well-being of her husband. When they finally reached the hospital, Aham was rushed in by the nurses. Meanwhile Jigar went to take care of the formalities and inform the family leaving Rashi with Gopi. It was then when finally Gopi broke down completely. Gopi sobbed silently. Rashi watched as Gopi cried. She hated Gopi and has seen her crying before but looking at her younger cousin today, Rashi felt bad. Rashi was even worried for Aham Jiju and hoped he would be fine because if not, Gopi will be the first one to die. She went up to Gopi and made her sit on a chair. She felt really awkward but she placed an arm around Gopi and squeezed her shoulder. Gopi did not react to that. Instead she closed her eyes and started praying while the tears continued sliding down her cheeks.
Her Ahamji was in so much pain. Gopi knew it. The way he said in the car just broke her heart. If he wasn't angry and did not look at her, all this wouldn't have happened. Now she knew that her Ahamji's accident was partly her fault. She was horrible. She caused her husband so much pain.
Meanwhile in the operation theatre, Aham was semi-concious. He started thinking. If he died, Jigar would have to take care of the business. But Jigar has yet to be familiarised with their foreign businesses, then again Chirag Kaka would be burdened. What about the family? His Mom? She would be devastated. No he couldn't die, he was still needed. Then his thoughts went to Gopi, his wife. What about her? The last thing he remembered was hugging her like his life depended on it. She kept telling him everything will be alright. He also remembered telling her that he was in pain. The last image he had of her was of her crying.
Aham came to a realisation at that moment. He has always been making his wife cry. Always. He started getting flashbacks. His marriage, the slap, making her sleep on the floor, the squeezing of her arm, humiliating her in front of the family, the scoldings, those hurtful words, sending her away. There were just so many. Never once did she fight back. Instead, she prayed for him. He was a monster. Now he knew why he was in pain while Gopi was saved. Gopi's Kanhaji was punishing him. Aham too prayed. He needed to live, he needed to apologise. He felt numb, there was no physical pain, despite that, tears formed into his eyes.
In the visitor's room, the whole Modi family was present. Jigar and Parag were consoling a crying Kokila while Hetal and Chirag attended to a dazed Gopi. Rashi was standing there, trying to fit in. But somehow she couldn't. Surprisingly, it affected her more than it should. Hetal and Chirag gently started cleaning Gopi's wounds as well. Hetal was gently explaining to Gopi and reassuring her.
After a few hours, Aham was all cleaned up. He had a fracture on his arm and ankle. Lots of scratches on his face and neck, but there were only 3 deep ones, since they were exposed, and a long scar on his chest. Aham had bandages everywhere. The doctors then allowed all of them to enter Aham's ward. Gopi went it last. She wasn't sure she would be able to see her strong and powerful Ahamji helpless on the bed. Besides, he wouldn't want to see her either.
As Aham looked at his family members coming in, he tried to smile, but his jaw was hurting really badly. He looked for Gopi and saw that she was the last one to enter. She was still in the baby pink sari which was all messed up with blood. She was behind Chirag Kaka and he could not see her. Then he felt someone sit beside. His Mom. He gave his Mom his attention as she spoke. He could see she had been crying but now she was back to being the strong woman and was encouraging him. He then glanced back at his Chirag Kaka and saw that Gopi was peeping from behind him. When their eyes met, Gopi quickly hid herself again. He saw the tears she was trying hard to hold back.
Finally the doctor advised everyone to leave. Aham watched as his family members left the room one by one. Rashi first followed by Gopi and then the rest. It did not take Aham long to realise that Gopi was not showing herself to him purposely. He was expecting her to rush to his side and fuss over him. Despite his pain, he imagined her to do it. But she didn't. She avoided him. As he laid there in the room alone, he started thinking why.
The doctor was explaining to the Modis that Aham would take time to recover. Since his dressing need to be done and all, they would be keeping him in the hospital for a few days. Kokila being Kokila, disagreed with the doctor and told him if only the dressing is the issue, why must he stay back in the hospital. The dressing would have to be done even after he was discharged so why not now? She further continued that she could do the dressing for her son herself, just let her see the nurse do it once. The doctor, intimidated by her, could not argue further and told her that once it would be time for dressing, the nurse would show her how its done.
Since Aham was resting and no one was allowed in, Parag and Chirag stayed back while the rest returned home. After all, even Jigar, Rashi and Gopi were tired after the long night. It was already 7 in the morning.
At home as Hetal and Kokila were in the kitchen preparing snacks for Jigar, Rashi and Gopi, Hetal started explaining to Kokila gently,"Kokila, i know no matter how old Aham becomes, he will still be a child for you. But you see, now Aham has a wife to take care of him. Did you notice where Gopi was when we went into the room to meet Aham? She was nowhere near him. Instead, she was hiding behind Jigar Ke Papa."
This got Kokila thinking and so she asked,"Mota Bhabhi, what is your point?"
Hetal just smiled and said,"You want Aham to come close to Gopi, let Gopi take care of Aham, let her do the dressing for Aham. Who knows, they will grow closer starting from here?" With that she poured tea into 3 teacups and left Kokila to think.
Gopi went up to her room, his room. She was so tired but still did not forget to thank her Kanhaji for saving her husband. For a moment she felt like she was going to lose her husband. She took her clothes and got into the bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror shocked. She was a mess! There was a little dried blood on her neck and her clothes, she definitely won't be wearing this sari again. She then showered and laid down on her bed with the image of a bandaged Ahamji in her mind. A few minutes later, Hetal Kaki came in with tea and some snacks. Gopi immediately sat up and took the tray from a smiling Hetal. Gopi just adored her Hetal Kaki. She was so nice.
Hetal then sat Gopi down on the bed and checked her wounds before looking at Gopi again. She loved Gopi. Gopi was like the daughter she never had. So soft-spoken, so giving. Perfect for Aham. She knew that right now Gopi was tired and could use a little support. Hetal laid Gopi down and carress her head.
She then started,"Gopi Dikra, why were you hiding from Aham just now? He is your husband right? You have to take care of him."
Gopi looked up at her Hetal Kaki and said sadly,"Kakiji, i don't think he wants to see me."
Hetal just shook her head as she continued "No Dikra, i have faith in you, after all, you are so nice, it may be unbelievable right now, but Aham is used to having you around. Without you, life for him would be difficult. I am your Kakiji right? So now listen to your Kakiji, once Aham comes back later in the evening, you will take care of his every need, you will do his dressing as well. Understood?"
Gopi just nodded, not sure if she could do that.
Hetal smiled at Gopi and said,"Now you lie down here and sleep until i come and wake you up to bring your husband home." With that Hetal covered Gopi with the blanket, drew all the curtains and left the room.
My husband, it sounded so nice, with this last thought in mind, an exhausted Gopi fell asleep.
Meanwhile, in Jigar's room, both Jigar and Rashi have freshened up and had their tea which Hetal brought for them. Rashi was thankful for she was already having a headache and tea was just what she needed. Her Maaji was really nice.
Soon the day passed with Aham alone in the hospital room, bored to death. He was not used to doing nothing. His thoughts kept drifting back to Gopi. Their dance together, having her beside him as his wife, the accident, being in her arms, her reassuring words, her tears and her avoiding him. That irritated him. He was so sure Gopi would come running and he even thought she would hug him like in Bollywood films but she didn't and the fact that she did not even show herself just made him even more irritated. Moreover here he was stuck in this stupid room, on this stupid bed with all this stupid bandages. He even hated the nurse who was in-charge of his dressing. He rather have Gopi do it, he might even enjoy. Its not that he loved her, there was nothing to love in that gawar except for her cooking, organisation skills and maybe her appearance. The fact that they were opposites just reminded him of the phrase commonly used for couples, opposite attract. Yes she was respectful, giving and responsible. So what if she gave him attention and catered and took care of his needs. Well she knows how to console and reassure him and she learns fast and tries to please him as well, and of course he can't deny that she looked cute at times making him laugh although he doesn't show it and sometimes she even looks delicious enough to eat, but that doesn't mean she was the one for him...or was she?
Aham is questioning himself!!! Our hotty got into an accident, but that's okay, he just got injured a little badly. Hmm, accident or punishment?
