Hi! Thanks for the ongoing support. I'm sorry its been a while since I updated as busy with work. But hopefully, the next part is long enough to make up for it. Hopefully another update end of this week.

I have to admit that when I first started writing this part, I thought Ahem was definitely going to trash it out with Kinjal and get angry with her. Unfortunately or fortunately, as soon as I started writing, it just flowed the way it did.

So I hope you do like it and do comment after!!!

Part 5

Ahem knocked and waited by the door. He took some deep breaths to focus himself. He was not afraid. Contrary, he had never felt more confident and alive before. He was definitely a man on a mission: to correct the wrong doings on his wife.

His wife?

He smiled. It definitely felt right. He had repeatedly said it to himself during the car trip from the jewelers. Did this mean he was in love with Gopi? He doubted it, but he wasn't sure.

Isn't this strange? Now I'm not sure if I'm in love with her? Does this mean yes? Does this mean no?

Does it matter?

Not really. Gopi and he were married and he was going to start treating her as his wife. But how? He truly didn't know.

How would you have treated Anita if she were your wife?

He laughed. Gopi was nothing like Anita. She seemed so breakable but yet the tiny girl was very resilient. He was not sure how many women would have put up with his maltreatment. If he were Gopi, he would have told him off, not shying away from some profanities, and then walked out. But yet, Gopi did neither. She stayed and treated his family and him with utmost respect and love.

He became aware of his heartbeat increasing. He was definitely going to make it up to her. Firstly, if only someone would open this door.

He knocked again, this time more forcefully. He didn't have all day. He wanted to get home and see how Gopi reacted to the bangles, but how would he give it to her? Again he was not sure. He ran his hand through his hair, why was he not as confident when it came to wooing her.

Wooing? My dikra has definitely grown.

His inner voice mocked him again, but he didn't mind it. He had to agree, he was definitely growing more mature.

Ahem was about to knock on the door for the third time, when Urmila opened the door and stood with her eyes and mouth wide opened. Typical.

Ahem disliked the woman but he had to remind himself, that he had no rightful reason to. Well, she was rude to him on their first encounter but he reasoned it was his fault since his car splashed mud on her outfit.

"Jai Sri Krishna" She managed to speak after a period of silent staring.

"Jai Sri Krishna. Is Kinjal home?"

"Yes, I'll get her for you. She must be sleeping. Please sit." She gestured towards the sofa and Ahem followed obligingly.

He remembered the last time when he was here, he came to get Gopi home. He had no intention of sitting and he had observed her hiding behind a window. Again, his thoughts drifted to that day and how mesmerizing she looked. He closed his eyes hoping to visualize that moment again.

"Bhai, are you ok?"

Ahem immediately opened his eyes and stared at Kinjal. "Jai Sri Krishna" he forced a smile. He had replayed how he was going to question Kinjal and in all scenes, it had one commonality: he had lost his cool. What good would that do? It would only serve to increase her hatred for Gopi, which was not his intention at all. He would need to stay calm.

"Jai Sri Krishna. Bhai shall I get you something to drink, tea?" she asked as her eyes continued to search his, hoping for clues.

"No Kinjal. Later. I was in the area and thought that it has been ages since we had a proper chat. Sit down."

He watched as Kinjal sat on the other end of the sofa. She glanced across the room and then turned to look at him.

"How are things? How's mum? Dad? Baa? Naani? Kaki? Kaka and Jigar?" she asked as she played with her fingers.

"They are all fine. Gopi is good as well." He met her stare and watched as she too forced a smile.

What is your problem Kinjal? Especially with her?

Again she watched as she eyed something behind him. He turned and looked at the kitchen. Nothing. What was wrong with this girl?

"What are you looking at Kinjal?" he could hear his voice deepening.

Stay calm.

"Nothing." She whispered and again stared at something behind him.

He removed a pen from his shirt and dropped it on the floor. "Is everything ok here?" He bend and slowly picked up his pen though his eyes were searching for the source of Kinjal's distraction. He saw a silhouette standing by the kitchen door. She definitely looked irritable. Was it at him for visiting or at Kinjal? He was not sure though he was definitely annoyed. Was Urmila eavesdropping on their conversation?

"Kinjal, lets go for a walk."

"Now?"

He nodded and stood up.

Immediately, Urmila was by his side. "Leaving so soon? I thought you might join us for tea." She smiled sweetly though he was sure that she was not made of honey but venom.

"No, I was just taking Kinjal out for a walk. I hope its ok with you." Ahem did not wait for her response. He gestured Kinjal to follow him and he led her to the car.

"Vijay, I'm just going to speak to Kinjal for a few moments." He informed Vijay as he sat in the car and then waited for Kinjal to slide in. In silence, they watched as Vijay opened the driver's door, switched on the ignition and turned the aircond to maximum before he closed the door and took few steps away from the car and waited.

Ahem then turned his attention to Kinjal.

"Does Urmila eavesdrop on you all the time?"

"She does it with everybody. She is also always on the phone with Rashi though I don't know what they are constantly conversing about." Her voice sounded more relaxed.

Ahem made a mental note of that information though he was unsure why.

"Kinjal, I need to ask you a question and I want an honest answer. Okay?" he said sternly. He watched as she again searched his face for clues before she nodded. "How do you feel about Gopi?"

She stared blankly at him for a few minutes and then turned away. "Does it matter?"

"Yes it does. I'm not going to lie to you. You are my sister and we've been honest with each other since young though lately with the Anita and Umang affair, I feel we have just drifted apart. I'd like us to be the way we were before we grew up." Ahem responded surprisingly. Where did that come from?

Kinjal turned and looked at him, her eyes welling with tears. "I like that too bhai but I think maybe its too late."

"Its never too late Kinjal. I choose not to believe that. Irrespective of whether you are married or not, you are my sister." Ahem grabbed her hand and smiled. "Now Kinjal, how do you feel about Gopi?"

"I used to hate her. I blamed her for everything." She took a deep breath and continued "Your unhappiness, your forced marriage to her, my unhappiness, Umang leaving me because he blamed me for what happened to his sister and then me marrying that Dhawal." She let go of his hand and then touched her gold earing before a slight smile cross her face.

Was that a gift from him to her? He had to give it to Dhawal. He was definitely more intelligent than him on this matter.

"Kinjal, it wasn't her fault. Granted I did get married to Gopi but I wasn't forced into it. I knew what I was getting myself into. Mum liked her and that was the deciding factor."

"But Bhai, you were unhappy though. Mum should have seen it but she was more interested in herself, in getting the right bahu. Sometimes I do get angry with mum for being so selfish!"

"Kinjal! Stop." He sensed his breathing increasing and his jaw tightening. Stay calm! He took a deep breath and steadied himself. "Kinjal, you know how I feel about mum. She has made a lot of sacrifices for both of us. If she found a good bahu that she could be proud of than so be it, she's right."

"But Anita. What about your love for Anita? Doesn't that mean something?"

"It did but that was then, Kinjal. To be honest, Anita and I probably had no future." Ahem turned and stared at the children playing in the common area. "Prior to the engagement ceremony, Anita and I did meet. But she had asked me to chose between her or mum." He shook his head and smiled as he turned and met Kinjal's puzzling look. "I was so blind Kinjal. I should have seen it earlier. A woman that could ask me to choose between her and my mother must never have truly known me and therefore, how could she be in love with me? How could she ask me to chose knowing that it would tear me inside. Did she not know how important mum and my family were to me? Did she not care about my happiness?"

He was definitely blind. Over the last few months, he was preoccupied with what he had lost that he failed to see what he had truly gained. Gopi placed everyone before her. She was unselfish, unconditionally loving. She cared for each of his family members, even Kinjal. When he was very angry at Kinjal with the Umang affair, despite him shouting to her to leave them, she stood in front of Kinjal, protecting her against him. Against him knowing that he was capable of hitting her. His mother was right. She was definitely a gem and her bahu. No one could ever take her place and no one could remove her from her position, not even him.

"Kinjal, I'm sorry about Umang. I'm sorry I ended it the way I did with Anita and that had repercussions on you. But Umang played you Kinjal. Even when mum and all of us agreed to the wedding, it was he who left you. Your anger should be at him, not Gopi. Your anger should be at me, not Gopi. For that I'm truly sorry." He embraced both her hands with his and gave them a kiss.

"Bhai?" Kinjal spoke softly.

"Yes?"

"Since when?" she smiled.

He looked at her confused. Since when what? He was sorry for Umang. Actually he wished he had actually beat him up more effectively, but Kinjal did not need to know that.

"Bhai, does Gopi know?"

"Know what Kinjal? You are not making sense."

"That you love her?"

"I don't'" ahem struggled to finish the sentence. Did he love her? He shook his head and tried to stay serious but his mouth kept twitching as though it wanted to explode with joy.

"You don't have to tell me anything but remember you said we were going to start being honest. Besides, it was slightly evident when you were staring at her during Holi." She smiled then threw her arms across his body in a hug.

Ahem couldn't help but hug her back. This was definitely not as expected and he still hadn't broached the topic of the necklace. But he truly didn't care. He was over the moon, he had got his sister back!

"My bhai" she whispered, "you are a hero at work but when it comes to your love life, you are a real anda (egg), zero. You don't even know that you are falling in love with mum's Gopi bahu" she tightened her hug before returning to her prior posture and position.

With a stern look on her face and her arms folded across her chest, "Why are you interested in how I feel about Gopi? Would you leave her if I asked you to, if I hated her?"

For the second time, Ahem was confused. Didn't she just seem happy about his relationship with Gopi. So why the ultimatum?

"Bhai, I hate Gopi. Leave her!" she raised her voice. "Will you leave her?"

"No." he whispered.

"What?"

"No. I wont leave her Kinjal. She is my wife. I know she is not from our standard but actually I think she is better than us in many ways. Look at the way she handles everybody in the family and the love that seeps through her whole being. Her resilience even when she is being blamed for things or when she is scolded unnecessarily. She may not be formally educated but that can be easily addressed with private tuition. I wont let her go Kinjal, I'm sorry."

Kinjal uncrossed her arms as she started laughing. "You should see your state. And you don't love her?! You are definitely gone. But I'm glad. At least you've fallen for Gopi. Imagine if you were married to Rashi?"

Ahem thought for a moment and then joined Kinjal in laughter. He thanked his stars. Despite being educated, Rashi was definitely not his type. She was everything Gopi wasn't.

"so bhai, why are you truly here?"

"I need to ask you about the necklace?"

"what necklace?"

"The one that I thought Gopi had spent 5 lakh on. But it now doesn't matter. She is my wife and if she wanted to spend that money on a necklace, she was fully entitled to. After all what is mine is hers." The realization finally dawned on him. "I think you need to go back now Kinjal otherwise Urmila will be worried about what we were getting up to." He placed his hand on the door hand.

"Wait Bhai. I have something to tell you."

"Go on"

"Thank you for coming and thank you for being my brother again. And you were right, it wasn't Gopi's fault that we were both in such a mess. It was us, maybe mum spoilt us too much."

"Talk about yourself. I was never spoilt."

"Never spoilt. If mum could chew your food, she would."

"Ok. Maybe she does still mother me."

"Well, maybe she will need to start backing off otherwise how will Gopi bhabi mark her rightful space in your life?"

Ahem was speechless. What kinjal said was absolutely right. But he didn't want to upset his mother either. Any change would have to be small and discrete and gradual.

"About the necklace. I placed the order. I wanted you to think that she was only with you for the money. I then gave it to her, saying that it was a present from you and that you wanted her to wear it for the evening. I'm sorry" Kinjal backed towards the door, slightly afraid of a possible reaction.

"Thanks for being honest Kinjal. I knew you ordered it as I went to the jewellery store and he showed me your signature on the receipt card. Anything else that I don't know?"

"I've not been good bhai. You are definitely going to hate me."

"I can't hate you Kinjal. I may not like what you do but I will still love you. What else did you do?" ahem was now curious. What else could she have done? He tried to think back but was blank.

"I also told her on the day of her mendi that you were in love with Anita and showed her your photos. And then I wrote the letter pretending to be you, and wrote that you did not want to marry her and that you were not in love with her."

"You did what?" he felt his jaw clenched.

"I'm sorry. Umang said that I had to split you two as you wanted to be with Anita. I'm so sorry bhai. Maybe that's why god is punishing me and I'm here with that gawar and his family." She started to sob.

"No Kinjal, Dhawal does love you very much. Can you imagine what it must be like to love someone completely even when the person is icy cold. How awful must that feel? And yet, Dhawal and Gopi go on loving. You need to count yourself very lucky, at least you have a loving guy. About this place, that can easily change. Once you are with him, I'm sure he will have the motivation to achieve anything."

"You're not angry with me then?"

"I was very angry Kinjal when I was on my way here. But now I'm not. And I'm not angry with the other things either. I've also done awful things to her and now I just hope, I can put all of that behind me and start afresh with her. Hopefully she will forgive me."

"She will bhai, she adores you completely like a love sick puppy."

Ahem had to smile. It was definitely a good description of Gopi.

"Can I go now? Say hi to everyone at home, especially my bhabi." She smiled. "One thing bugs me though."

"What is it?"

"I wrote that letter stating that you were not in love with her and didn't want to marry her. Yet, she turned up to the wedding."

"She couldn't read."

"Yes, I didn't know that at the time. But she must have given it to someone to read."

"She told me she did but I did not believe her. Why would anyone purposely lie about the letter, unless they wanted her to suffer? Who would do such a thing?"

Silence swept through the car for few minutes.

"Rashi?!" Ahem and Kinjal spoke simultaneously.

"Rashi does want Gopi out of the house; but why?" Kinjal continued. "Initially, I often saw Rashi purposely do things to get Gopi into trouble. I didn't say anything because I thought it was helping me as well. But now I'm not sure as to what her true intentions are. I think maybe you need to keep an eye over that girl, she is very sly and Gopi is too naive for her own good."

"I agree. When I'm around I'll keep an eye on Rashi and you keep an eye on her mother."

"Deal. Doesn't this remind us of when we were kids?" Kinjal spoke excitedly. She gave him another hug and then walked out heading home.

Vijay, on cue, was back in the driver's seat. "Sir, where to?"

"Home, Vijay." Ahem smiled as he rested his head on the headrest. He placed his hand on the jewellery box and closed his eyes. It definitely has been a long day but today he could sleep in peace. He flexed and extended his neck. Maybe he would ask mum to give him a head massage before he retired to bed.

Preview...next part...you guessed it...definitely the head massage and how does he give gopi the bangles? stay tune...
