Chapter ten

Gopi opened her eyes and glanced around the room. She was puzzled for a few minutes before she realized where she was. When she realized it she felt a warm glow in her heart. Her heart told her that somewhere in the house the person dearest to her was present. The thought of him send her blood rising, she smiled to herself thinking that of all people in the world it was Aham who had saved her. She silently send a thank you to her Kanaji for making her meet Aham.

Gopi had a life which most people envied. She was loved by her parents and pampered by her brothers. Still she was pure, innocent and kind at heart. She always put her family before doing anything. She was good at studies and passionate about drawing. If she sees something inspirational she draws it to perfection. Another quality of Gopi, was her obsession for dance. Since her mother was a classical dancer, Gopi learned Kathak and Hindustani from a tender age. More than everything Gopi loved Kanaji. He was her favorite god. She always talked to him as if he is her friend. She dreamed of marrying Kanaji.

On one beautiful morning she had planned to tease her brothers, but it was someone who resembled her Kanaji of her dreams who fell for it. When he came run towards her, and asked where she was hurt, she fell speechless, but somehow she ran away from that place. From her mother she learnt that it was her brother Viren's friend Aham of whom she had heard from her brother. After Viren began to go for the university she missed him desperately. Rahul was there but Viren was fun. Rahul was always the protective big brother, while Viren teased and played with her. When he came home for the holidays, he usually talked about his friend Aham, which made Gopi, jealous and curious. She used to tell her brother that if she met Aham she would give him her piece of mind for taking her brother from her.

But when she met him she felt shy. She could not understand why, but she could not met his eyes. His eyes were dark brown and told her something which she could not understand. Till the day he left their house Gopi watched him hidden behind curtains, pillars and windows. The more she saw him the more she loved him. Yes she realized she loved him, she had dreamed of him she had seen him as her kanaji in her dreams. But something stopped her from facing him. Viren started making fun of her. Thought she was angry at him, deep inside her heart she was pleased.

Then came the day when Aham left for his home. She felt as if heart was torn away from her. After that every year she waited for him to come. But he never came. She could not ask even Viren about it, so all her feelings were hidden by her smile. To forget her pain she plunged into studies, dancing and painting. Whenever she was overcome by her desire to see Aham she used to go to the spot of jasmine vines where she had first met him. After nearly two terrible years her Kanaji came back for her. Aham came back to see her, especially to see her. She knew it when his eyes started to search for her. When they came face to face their eyes connected and told each the feeling of the other. They knew that the two years of parting was terrible for them. Yet their mutual respect for their families kept them from confessing their love.

Finally the dreadful day came. It was Aham's last day at their house and Gopi had planned to tell him about her love. She had painted a special picture to present him. Her painting told everything her words could not. But everything changed. She was electrocuted, Aham was thrown out of their house and above all her father was angry. He told Viren to stop all his communication with Aham and threatened him if he found that Viren had not listened to him then he would see the bad side of his father.

Gopi was heartbroken. She could not go against her family. She took an oath that if she got married it was only to Aham otherwise she will remain unmarried. Soon Gopi joined college along with her friends. Though she tried to forget Aham, his thoughts were always fresh in her mind. He was her first love. He was the love of her innocent heart. How could she forget him? Gopi went though her life mechanically, always with a fake smile and drowning her pains in drawing and dancing till the fateful day which brought her to Aham.
