"Fitness trainer to a hero"

Sharad Kelkar talks about his career switch from being a fitness trainer to a hero in 'Saat Phere'. Sharad Kelkar is playing the male lead in two back-to back shows on Zee. Essaying Nahar Singh in 'Saat Phere' and Rudra in 'Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka', Sharad seems to have struck a double whammy. The actor proclaims, "The well-written scripts and the cast are responsible for the success of both these shows." The Gwalior-based Sharad came to Mumabi four years ago. He traces his starry aspirations, "I am a graduate in physical education. It was my passion to maintain a good body and hence I worked as a gym instructor in Gwalior. Eventually I began aspiring for showbiz. I guess I got to play Nahar Singh's role largely because of my toned physique." But Sharad now is constantly on a weight-watch as he finds little time to work-out. Though his popularity with the opposite sex runs high, Sharad is "madly in love" with his wife Kirti Gaekwad who's also acting in 'Saat Phere' and 'Sinndoor…' He gushes, "She is a very sweet and caring person, though very forgetful! Kirti is an expert non-vegetarian cook. She makes amazing chicken hazarvi." The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary early this month.

Doctor's order?

Has Poonam Gulati been seeing a married doctor for the last four years?

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

Jodi kamaal ki: Poonam and Mahesh
Poonam Gulati (Shubhra of Saat Phere) has been seeing a doctor named Mahesh Chitnis for the last four years. Poonam and Mahesh have been open about their relationship even though Mahesh is married and has a two-year-old son.

A close friend of Poonam says, "Poonam and Mahesh's friendship started when both of them used to host a show on Doordarshan. Mahesh was not much into acting at that time as he was busy with his medical practice. Poonam eventually moved into the television industry and got busy with her work. Last year when Poonam was suffering from jaundice Mahesh took good care of her. Poonam used to go to his clinic at midnight after finishing her shoot and Mahesh would be there for her. Since last year, they have been more open about their relationship. Although, Mahesh is married and has a two-year-old son, they are very much in love. Both of them meet for dinners and Mahesh also accompanies Poonam to parties. Poonam also insisted that the production team of Antakshari get Mahesh as her singing partner in the show."

According to a source from Antakshari, "Mahesh was Poonam's partner in the show only because of her insistence. In Antakshari, there is a round where you have to run through water to reach the buzzer. Poonam refused to run in the water and the shooting was stalled for two hours. However, when Mahesh asked Poonam to go ahead with the round, she immediately agreed."

Poonam says, "Yes, I told the Antakshari team to include Mahesh in my team because he's a good friend. Yes, I refused to go through water for the buzzer round because I was dressed inappropriately. But when Mahesh asked me I agreed to do it."

On being probed further, she said, "We have known each other for a long time. Last year, Mahesh took care of me, and I used to go to his dispensary after shooting at night as I was being treated for jaundice. Mahesh has been a pillar of support for me. And we do go to parties together. But I am not dating him, he is just a special friend."

According to Mahesh, "Poonam called me for Antakshari and I was more than eager to participate in the show. We go out together because we are close friends. I am married and Poonam is just a friend."

'Saree and me? Give me a break!'

Poonam Gulati is tired of doing saree-clad roles and wouldn't mind playing a stylish vamp!

SHARIN WADER

The petite Poonam Gulati, who plays Shubra in Saath Phere wants to scream from the rooftop that she wants to portray characters that are synonymous with her. Contrary to what she is in real life, her reel life image is that of a saree-clad woman with a kid in tow. So does the girl feel trapped in the wrong image? "I'm very different off screen than what I'm on screen," says Poonam. "What you see in Saath Phere and Jab Love Hua, is probably not me. But then you hardly get to be yourself on screen," says the 25-year-old actor who is also a professional Western classical ballad dancer. But Poonam is quite happy with the way her characters have shaped up. "My role in Saath Phere, where I give tit for tat to my saas is liked by many," she says. In her other serial Jab Love Hua too, she plays a village belle who roams around with a ghoonghat over her head. "But people have complimented me for my Bhojpuri accent," she says.
Isn't she scared that she will be approached for similar kind of roles? "I hope not," she says quickly and adds, "Ironically, bold girls are portrayed as vamps and salwar wearing ones as good girls. This needs to change. People are scared to experiment. But I don't mind playing a stylish vamp, provided the role is good," says Poonam.

Kahani ghar ki: Mazar Sayed
Mouli Ganguly and Mazhar Syed are all set to tie the knot this year. Although the couple has been tightlipped about their relationship over the years, the buzz is that they are planning to get married soon.

Now that Mouli has already proved her acting prowess in serials Kahin Kissi Roz, Sarkar and Resham Dankh and Mazhar's career is going great guns with Saath Phere and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, marriage seems the next best option for the couple. According to the grapevine, Mazhar is also planning to buy a new house where they will be staying after their marriage.

Future perfect: Mouli Ganguly
Says Mazhar, "Let's see, if everything goes well, marriage is certainly on the cards, any time this year. Mouli and I enjoy each other's company and would love to get married. I am planning to buy a flat either in Versova or Juhu."

Will religion be a hindrance in their marriage? "I think love is universal and religion won't be a hindrance as far as our relationship is concerned," says Mazhar.

Mouli, who has been keeping a low profile after Resham Dankh and has been turning down offers for some time, says, "I don't have immediate plans for marriage but it's definitely on the cards. Since I am not working for a while, many of my friends thought I was already married and congratulated me for the same. I have never been very vocal about my relationship and am enjoying life."

Rajshri with husband Sanjot Vaidya

Rajshri Thakur has every reason to be ecstatic these days. She is now married to her long-time beau Sanjot Vaidya and is super-excited about being addressed as Rajshri Vaidya.

When asked about the feelings of taking saat pheras in real life, she says, "It was a very long day.

The ceremony went on for hours, but it was exactly the way I wanted it to happen. I am in a very happy state of mind these days."

Line lagao

The actress tied the knot to Sanjot on February 8 in a traditional Maharashtrian wedding. Suffering from pre-wedding blues that ranged from sending invitation cards to hunting for the perfect bridal outfit, Rajshri is glad everything fell into place. "I had these wonderful designer friends Priya and Chintan who have worked with me during some wedding scenes for Saat Phere.

They designed the reception dress and put everything into place in an amazingly short period."

Continuing with her wedding day experience, she says, "By the end of it, I really got tired standing on the stage. There was a huge queue of friends and relatives who came to meet us. But it was nice to see that everyone could make it."

Aamne-saamne

When asked if her Saat Phere unit marked their attendance, she says, "Yes. Each and everyone of them came. I thought it was really sweet of them."

Rajshri's maternal home will be a stone's throw away from her in-laws' place. "We aren't staying that far away from my parents' home. But my mom is already missing me and keeps asking Sanjot when he can send me over."

The couple has zeroed in on their honeymoon location, but have yet to fix a date. "We will go to Kerala some time in March. I love South India but have never seen the backwaters. This will be a great chance to do that."

T he actor who has won rave reviews enacting the character Brijesh bhaisaab in Saat Phere (Zee) is now seen as Rohan Lamba in Viraasat (Star One). Akshay Anande says, "I play the eld- est brother who has been missing for 14 years. I took up the offer because the role was interesting. It's a positive char- acter." Anande considers it a step ahead of his character in Saat Phere. He is all praise for the producers of Viraasat: "They treat me very well. I share a friendly relationship with the other co- stars. I have earlier worked with Aman (Verma), Kiran (Kumar) and Sangee- ta (Ghosh). In fact, Sangeeta and I were the lead pair in her first Hindi film Mohabbat Pehli Nazar Mein, when she was just 15 years old. It's good to work with her again." After doing movies, he is clear that he only wants to do roles of substance. "Ideally, I would like to work in both mediums. Today, the power of televi- sion is enormous. I'm sure that even Bachchanji did not realize the power of TV till he did Kaun Banega Crorepati," says Anande. Which is his best performance to date? "I consider my role in Zakhm the best so far. It was 10 years ago, it wasn't a hit. My cameo in Ghulam was noticed. And, that happened only because it was a super hit," ends Anande.

The art of time management
By: A hitList Correspondent
February 24, 2007
Apara Mehta
Stress, erratic work hours and long gruelling schedules. It is all part of an actor's job.

I have been working non-stop for over a decade and people ask me how I manage it. There is television, theatre and films.

We hear of cases of telly actors fainting on the sets due to the demanding schedules. It is all in the mind.

When you pursue something you always wanted to do and simply loved to do, there is nothing that can stop you.

There are times when I am flying to different cities for my plays in the evenings and I am back in the morning for the TV shoots and in the evening I am flying out again for the show.

You just have to be motivated enough and go all out to make the most of it. Tomorrow my new Gujarati play Masti Ma Marriage, Marriage Ma Masti opens in the city. I just had a show in Dubai of the Aaye Door Se Milne Huzoor Se.

I also have my television shoot. There are always two bags packed and kept ready in the car. One for an overnight and the other which has stuff for three to four days.

So I am also prepared and get take off on short notice. There is no stress even to pack!

Ear splitting

Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni is having a tough time coping up with her heavy jewellery in Saat Phere. The actress has hurt her ear lobes several times while shooting.

Rajshri Thakur

Acting in a daily soap can be painful at times. And Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni in Saat Phere can vouch for it. The actress is having a terrible time coping with the heavy jewellery that she is required to wear in the show. Rajshri is made to wear heavy earrings that render her a traditional bahu look. But the heavy jewellery, especially her earrings have taken a toll on her ear lobes. Says Rajshri, "My ear lobes are very thin. Initially when my creative team decided upon this particular look, where I would be wearing heavy jewellery, I didn't realise what I was getting into. Not only are they heavy for my ears, the long earrings keep getting entangled in my tresses, which is quite irritating. I often find myself in pain and distress. Sometimes, I feel that my ear lobe will tear apart. Once I even had to go to a doctor to get ointments for the sore. Ever since, I have been using lighter earrings and I make sure to take them off when I am not shooting."

Says a source from the unit, "Since Saloni had to look different after marriage, we draped her in saris designed more like dupattas, brocade blouse and heavy jewellery to go with her image of a bahu from the royal family. But since Rajshri is having a tough time, we had to let her wear lighter stuff."

This is not all. Her straight-hair look is also giving her grief. "Although I have natural straight hair, still my hair dresser applies a lot of chemicals on my hair every day, which has completely damaged my hair. To maintain the continuity of my look, I have been strictly instructed not to tie up my hair in the show."

But has she spoken with the producers about her problem? "I have spoken to them and thankfully they are okay with light earrings that I am wearing these days," she says.

I n a red shirt, beige slacks and red shoes, not to miss the red sindoor in her forehead, the newly-wed Rajashree Vaidya nee Thakur looks striking. She is on the sets of Zee's Antakshari. Thakur, who plays Saloni, the female lead in Saat Phere, is there to participate in the semi-final round.Describing herself as a bathroom singer, she is upbeat about her daily show and her just married status. Her real life saat phere Sanjyot and I acted in a Marathi tele-film together. It was based on the lives of Shivaji and Shahji. He played Shivaji while I was his wife. We met in college and fell in love. We married on February 7. He understands the demands of my profession and eggs me on when I feel tired and lazy. Flashback I'm a commerce graduate. I also have a degree in law. I was a newsreader on DD, AIR and then Zee Marathi News. I have modelled for jewellery and hair oil com- mercials. Acting was just another thing that I was happy doing. I have always done things that have made me happy. Those dusky looks were her ticket to suc- cess When I was called for the auditions of Saat Phere, I didn't know that the story was about a dark girl who has problems getting married. I was first asked if I had long hair and knew to dance. My audi- tion went on for two hours. I bagged the role. I was narrated the story much later. I had no problems. The issue is a reality in our country. Oh, the demands of a daily show I agree the show, which started off as Saloni's story, went on to include other characters and plot lines. But these are demands of a daily show. The producers have to keep in mind what the viewers want. There are times when the audience is watching the show only for the saris an actress wears. Fan following Not just men but women, professionals and little children too follow the show. Recently, I was in London for the Zee Carnival. I was surprised that women from Pakistan and NRIs watched the show. It felt good. Arrogant, who me? Blame it on my serious looks. I have friends in the industry. Like I was shop- ping and Parikshit Sahniji saw me there. He complimented me on my work and said he would attend my marriage. And he did. Now he wouldn't have done that if I were arrogant or unapproachable. I am straightforward and I like people who are straight with me. Satte pe satta We are seven children. I am the youngest of five sisters and a brother. So sharing my make-up room or being surrounded by people is never a problem. My sisters do tease me about being a star. Big screen beckoning I started with an Indo-French film called Hawa Aane De by Partho Sengupta. I do see myself on the big screen. A good role, a good script, sound producers and great money is all I want. Movies, television or even a play — it really doesn't matter.

How do telly stars de-stress

Saif Ali Khan is back home, safe and sound and thank God for that. But his sudden illness brings upfront the high level of stress that the Bollywood and television actors go through. And yet as Shah Rukh Khan says, every actor knows that the stakes are high, so one just has to learn how to deal with the stress. Here, we check with the telly stars how they deal with the stress.

Aamir Ali
(Soumya, Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon ki)
"Since I work for 12 hours daily, stress has become my constant companion. I try to de-stress myself through night-outs and getting good sleep. At the moment I have no time to work-out, but I guess it's one of the best ways to keep the stress away."

Jennifer Winset
(Sneha, Kasauti Zindagi Kay)
"Generally I don't stress, but if I reach home early I prefer to solve the crossword, reading novels. Recently I read a novel called "Who will cry when you die" written by Robin Sharma. Sometimes I read spiritual books like a self help guide.

Rajshree Thakur
(Saloni, Saat Phere)
"I shoot for 14 hours daily. Stress is part of the stars' life and we have to face that. To overcome I do yoga especially meditation. It helps me to concentrate on my work load and after that I feel relaxed, calm."

Nigaar Khan
(Ayesha, Zaara-Pyaar Ki Saugat)
"Thankfully I consume lots of orange juice which ensures that I am not completely stressed out. At the moment I am doing a comedy show called Yes Boss which comes on Sab T.V. and it keeps me smiling all the time. So, whatever stress I experience is normal and pretty healthy. I never get fearful about things."

Rohit Roy
(Rahul Lamba, Virassat)
"Thankfully I don't stress easily but sometimes when I am stressed out physically I go to gym and do warm up exercises to destress but mentally I'm very bindas. If things are not happening I just let it go because if I'm stressed I get a huge headache."

Pulkit Samrat
(Lakshya, Kyunki...)
"Frankly speaking I shoot 24/7. From 10 in the morning to 9 in the night so I get hardly any time to relax. But I'm suffering from severe back and I'm taking pain killers to resist my pain. My time for easing up comes after 10 in the night. I generally talk with my mother, who is my support system."
