MUMBAI: Last week (week 4) saw Hindi GEC market leader Star Plus and newbie Colors contesting to grab the top spot. Colors was only 6.3 GRPs (gross rating points) behind Star Plus, while its channel share was half a percentage point lower at 25.

However, the TAM ratings for week 5 (25-31 January, HSM 4+ C&S homes) have a different story to tell.

Not only has Star successfully held onto the number one spot with a vice-like grip, but it has also managed to widen its gap with tough as nails rival Colors by garnering GRPs of 317.

For Star Plus, the newly launched weekly Yeh Rishta too has witnessed an 11 per cent growth over week 4's average of 5.6 TVR finishing at 6.2 TVR wherein the Tuesday episode singularly pocketed a TVR of 6.51.

"Yeh Rishta has been the most successful launch of a television show across all channels in the last three years and is rising rapidly," Adyanthaya quips.

For the last couple of months SP rating has been dropping and it was partly contributed to Starplus extending Bidaai to 1 hour( 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.). However in mid-January Bidaai went back to 1/2 hour yet SP rating has not risen. In fact the recently launch Starplus show at 9:30 p.m. has extremely high ratings as the article pointed out.
SP writers need to get their act together to improve the show - reusing storyline is not working. In fact in a recent TB article it said that the Colours channel may be launching a new show in it's 9:30 p.m. slot. Zee TV is also starting to end its non-functioning shows. The above article also pointed out newly launch shows on Zee are doing good.
