Today I got the opportunity to see rock on which is story of a rock band failing and reuniting after 10 years to finish an uncompleted job.

There is a biography by Pt Shiv Kr Sharma Journey With A Hundred Strings: My Life In Music where he talks about the struggle he had to do to survive in Bombay where music means Bollywood music or nothing, it is very difficult to take a parallel course. From picturesque Jammu to Bollywood to global fame as a classical musician whose name became synonymous with the folk instrument that he elevated to the traditional classical world, he has worked hard.
In my early 20s I often went to see rock shows and remember great names like Indus Creed (Rock Machine) Bombay, 13 AD (Kochin), Pentagram, Chakravuyh, Shiva, 5 D and many others, most of them perished: either members walking away to pursue a serious career or group dieing its own death. This movie Rock On is stark reminder of the fact that if rock music can survive then only place is in Bollywood music.

SEL IMHO are very very good in rock genre and here they will beat any other composer hands down, they have proved this in Dil Chahta hai, Lakshya (Back ground score where the seed of many songs of rock on were growing) and finally rock on. Go SEL...!!

this is quite sensible review
The music has been scored by the trio of Shankar Ehsan Loy and the lyricist for the album is none other than the legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar. The soundtrack consists of 9 tracks in total and out of them, Farhan has pocketed 5 songs to sing. Looks weird…hmmm (the debutante has been given the big quantity to render..???). Anyway, lets check it out whether he succeeds in it or not…

1): Socha Hai (Farhan Akhtar)

The album starts with 'Socha Hai' that is sung by Farhan Akhtar. His singing looks good in this track. If he wants to continue this art of singing, then he should get proper training. The arrangements of instruments remind you of the Pakistani rock bands' music. The lyrics raise the spirits. Music entices the souls.

Rating: 7/10

2): Pichle Saat Dinon Mein (Farhan Akhtar)

Next follows is yet another Farhan Akhtar's solo, which he renders aptly. The electronic guitar seems spongy to the ears. The lyrical job by his father Javed Akhtar goes well with the flow of the song, whereas the composition glides well too. Apart from everything that is well placed in this track and creates the euphoria atmosphere, nonetheless you feel there is some lacking that does not let you hear it again.

Rating: 5/10

3): Rock On (Farhan Akhtar)

The title track is given you to enjoy with now. 'Rock On' carries the wonderful electrifying singing of Farhan, who aptly sings like a rock star. Lyrics hold weight and so does the composition. The number has been chosen for the promotion of the film and it is accurately doing the job. Go for it.

Rating: 8/10

4): Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein (Dominique Carejo)

Dominique Carjeo has been roped in to trill this rock track, which has a soft feeling attached to it. She warbles the lines with much conviction and appeals you from tip to toe. The lyrical beauty along with the exquisiteness of the music send chill through the body. Lets hear it once again.

Rating: 8/10

5): Zehreeley (Suraj Jagan)

Suraj Jagan, who astonished the listeners with his classy style of singing with the title song of 'Johny Gaddar', comes up to croon this number. He sings it with perfection but is letdown with the mundane quality lyrics penned by the legendary Javed Akhtar. What happened to Shankar Ehsan Loy..? They too disappoint with the poor ilk of composition. A true waste of time. Move on to the next track immediately.

Rating: 1.5/10

6): Tum Ho Toh (Farhan Akhtar)

Farhan moors the belts again to deliver his goods. A soft number, it displays the good singing of Farhan Akhtar. Lyrics are good and the music compliments them appositely.

Rating: 7/10

7): Sindbad – The Sailor (Farhan Akhtar and Raman Mahadevan)

Both the vocalists Farhan and Raman create magic with their vocals while the lyrics attract also. The composition is mesmerizing.

Rating: 7/10

8): Phir Dekhiye (Caralisa Montein)

You get to hear another good vocalist on the album. Caralisa Monteiro who renders with much brilliance and craves a place in your heart. The guitar strings seem saccharine. Javed Akhtar and Shankar Ehsan Loy make the song more gorgeous.

Rating: 7/10

9): Pichle Saat Dinon Mein (Farhan Akhtar)

This is the repeat version of the original track, 'Pichle Saat Dinon Mein' and claims to be the live version. The singer does well and so does the rest of the team. But again the magic is missing.

Rating: 4.5/10

Conclusion:

Shankar Ehsan Loy and Javed Akhtar have earlier worked together for Frahan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Films in 'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Lakshya' and 'Don'. They have created ripples with this soundtrack of 'Rock On' also but there certainly are some flaws in this outing as well like 'Zehreeley' and 'Pichle Saat Dinon Mein'. Talking about Farhan Akhtar as a singer, the debutante singer might do well on Bollywood music scene provided that he gets some training and continues this profession seriously. Although the soundtrack has catchy songs to enjoy with nonetheless the oomph factor is missing, which is why it could not get popular with the music lovers. Wish the makers good luck.

Overall RS Rating: 6.5/10

I don't really like the music. And I actually like Himmy's "naam hai tera" and SEL's "dil chahta hai" better than the title song of rock on.

Dear kabhi

I am 100% sure while composing for this movie SEL must have thought 100 times from where and what to start, rock music is pretty hard on ears and normally a no no for Indian music audience, they had this task to cover the bridge between tha taste of bollywood music audience and retaining the soul of pure rock and IMHO they have come out pretty well, I was reading a review where the author criticised the music severe;y, I think that is purely out of frustration for some thing....
BTW did you listen to zehreley it is way too metallish for normal audience.

Adnan Sami has roped in Shubha Mudgal to sing an item number Bichua (again this song lacks creative tune in antara while mukhra is OK, rhythm is typical of Adnan) and for vada tumse, Pt Jasraj and Parveen Sultana, I think they have bailed out the otherwise ordainary song. Here is link to listen to them:

I quite liked the albumn. Farhan has done a decent job as a singer considering he is not a professional. SEL as usual are one of the most talented and original in their compositions. I have high regards for them especially Shankar who is a powerhouse of talent as a singer and could probably sing every song he composes very competently but I admire the fact that he actually gives aspiring singers and other professional singers a change and in other words a means to their bread and butter. Sometimes I wonder whenever HR promises breaks in his movies.....what does he really mean by that...a break singing in chorus??? or as a lead singer??

here we should be thankful to film makers like Farhan as well, when the script and direction changes or matures so does the music, long back I wrote on tfm blog, ARR will bring rock first but SEL have proved me wrong pleasantly.
