Punjini, I agree with you. Too many instruments used. The instruments used are more western or Arabic (african). Indian instruments like Tabla, Sarangi and sitar should have been used instead. Plus focus should have been on singing and music should be less cluttered to enhance the singing. In those days there were singers like Tansen, who used only his voice and use of instruments were much lesser so that the impact of vocals lasted.

I would have loved a good Dhrupad composition in this movie..it would have greatly added authenticity. With people like Tansen and Baiju Bawra supposedly having musical yudhs at the time, it is clear that classical music was in fashion in those days. To include the music of the commoners, some folk songs for Holi or Diwali could have been used too. Akbar was known to play Holi with Jodha.

I dont think the movies are made to be authentic actually because then it turns into a documentary. Also Film line wants to make a movie which will sell and appeal to the masses. It is all about the money. I dont think the producers and ARR thought it would sell i guess if they actually incorporated actual music from those times? I actually enjoyed the album and took it at face value. Then again it is a personal preferance. As a marketibality factor Khoya Khoya Chand tried to inact and have a album as if it was released in those times and it appealed a few music lovers. For many it just lacked the magic and for the masses it didnt appeal hence the album flopped. Just my take on why they might have not gone the total authentic feel of the music for that era.😛

Here is another review of the album :

Now this one is supposed to be big. Really BIG! And why not? After all Jodhaa Akbar has:

a) Ashutosh Gowarikar's labor of love finally getting ready to be unveiled after going through grueling shooting schedules,
b) Hrithik and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan coming together again after Dhoom 2, albeit in a different avatar,
c) A.R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar saab collaborating with Ashutosh for the third straight time after Lagaan and Swades and
d) A true historical being brought to celluloid after ages.

No wonder, everything about this film is expected to be flawless and studied to the minutest details. This is why one looks at the music with great expectations. However, it all turns out to be anticipation in vain as Jodhaa Akbar turns out to be the first major disappointment of 2008.

In the praise of Shahenshah Akbar comes the opening track 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah'. High on orchestra, the track has 'grand' written all over it and deserves an opulent treatment to it. Crooned by Mohammed Aslam, Bonnie Chakraborty and Chorus, the track hails Akbar for creating an empire where there is peace, harmony, and great life all around. The song doesn't belong to the kind which could be sung around or played loud at home but would do well when seen on the big screen, provided the picturisation is as lavish as Rahman's efforts.

Javed Ali, who has been trying to make his mark over last 3-4 years, gets a big break in the form of 'Jashn-E-Bahaaraa'. Sounding quite close to Sonu Nigam, Javed does well in his rendition of this slow track that is in complete contrast to 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah' in its treatment. Javed Akhtar saab's poetry is in full flow for this love song which comes close to the style of 60's in it's tune and flow.

However, one misses the kind of punch as expected from the first romantic song of the album and the final outcome turns out to be little lackluster with not much in the song pulling a listener for a repeat hearing. Towards the album's end, a 'Flute Instrumental' version of the song is heard as well, which works better as a core background piece which could be enjoyed with lights switched off.

Kashif written 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' is a devotional track, which is strictly for Rahman fans. Rendered by Rahman himself, it has the kind of arrangements as heard in 'Kehna Hi Kya' [Bombay]. With minimal instruments in play, 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' has its strength lying in it's lyrics but that too has minimal target audience due to the track's genre and setting. Overall, a situational piece that seems like an unlikely candidate to make much headway into current crop of audience. An 'Oboe Instrumental' piece for the same track comes at the album's end and yet again has the kind of treatment, which hardly promises a popular reach out.

'In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein' that comes later turns out to be most laidback of all and just doesn't ignite the kind of spark that one had been hunting for in this soundtrack so far. It's one thing to be slow and another to be just plain and simple drag (if boring is too harsh a word here)! By this time, one seriously starts wondering if Rahman was asked to work on the album really-really hard or did he actually finish the job in a jiffy? In spite of presence of Sonu Nigam and Madhushree, the song just doesn't click at all and in the end what one gets to hear is a number which fails to impress and ends without making any impression.

On the lines of 'O Paalan Haari' [Lagaan] (genre wise) comes 'Mann Mohanaa', which is yet, another devotional track after 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja'. This time around, it is Bela Shinde's turn to sing a number for Lord Krishna as the character of Jodha played by Aishwarya Rai turns over to God. Just like the rest of the album, this one too doesn't go any further than being ordinary and ends without creating any place in the heart (or the music collection) of the listener.

Special attraction of the music album of Jodhaa Akbar is a bonus DVD that includes a 4-minute long theatrical trailer of the film along with a few posters, story and cast and crew details of the film

The album kicks off well with a high adrenalin title song but beyond that there isn't much to look forward to. Jodhaa Akbar would work with a miniscule segment of audience and that too only in certain big cities. It is expected to take a good start at the stands due to high credentials involved but a sustained stay at the charts may only be possible only if the film is a success.

Jodhaa Akbar disappoints, and how! Though the music of Lagaan was good (catching on more after the film's success), Swades was always a few steps behind. However, Jodhaa Akbar does not have much to cheer about and fails to go an extra distance.

Just by using authentic music, a film does not become a documentary.

I was talking about the movie in general. It is made to Appeal and to sell. I said the music of that time might have not been a money generator today hence they might have opted out of it. Music is a very integral part of the movie. If the movie is not made to potray 100% authencity then neither will the music.

No comparisons please
On the eve of JodhaaAkbals release Ashutosh Gowariker tells Roshmila Bhattacharya that there is no reason to compare his 61m with K Asif 's classic

Jodhaa Akbar has been on the verge of release for months. Can we have an official date please? For a film like Jodhaa Akbar work doesn't end with the shooting. To match the sound of a cannon or a bow and arrow, takes time to get pitch perfect. We couldn't keep the October 12 deadline. There was no question of releasing in November and December along with either Om Shanti Om or Taare Zameen Pan I'd assured both Shah Rukh and Aamir that there would be no clash. So it was January 25 till my back injury put us back by another fortnight. Now we're releasing on February 15, for sure. Does the date have a particular significance or is it just the attraction of a Valentine Day's release? February 6 is Akbar and Jodhaa's wedding anniversary That's what the royal family tells us though some historians insist that it's January 14. Were you a history buff in school? I hated history I could never remember dates. The history lessons are catching up with me, first Lagaan, now JodhaaAkbar Why Jodhaa Akbas? I was intrigued by their marriage of convenience. A Hindu Rajput princess and a Mughal emperor entering an alliance for political gain, it's no different from the arranged marriages we have today The movie is supposed to have already crossed the Rs 50 crore ballpark... My wife Sunita is the executive producer After taking sets, locations, costumes, every detail into consideration, she arrived at a figure of Rs 37 crore. We've stretched that to Rs 40 crore. That's the official budget. There will be comparisons with Mughal-eAzam.. I'm prepared for that but honestly there can't be any comparisons. The stories unfold in different periods. Still when you think of Jodhaa and Akbar you think of Durga Khote and Prithviraj Kapoor. Both Prithviraj Kapoor and she were close to 60. Comparing them to Aishwarya and Hrithik is like comparing Ajay Devgan with Bobby Deol or with Sonu Sood because they all played Bhagat Singh. Is Aishwarya's voice being dubbed? Her Urdu diction was suspect in Unfrao Jaan. As a Rajput princess, she's not expected to speak Urdu. Hrithik was the one who had to slog. Apparently, Hrithik wasn't allowed to view his shots on the video monitor. I don't like my actors to keep running back to the video after every shot. It distracts them which is why the monitors are placed a distance away Hrithik made a sarcastic dig at how long the film has taken to wrap up. The battle scenes took some time and dates had to be extended. Still, we wrapped the film in seven months. So what's next? Lagaan was a fantasy, Swades a social drama and Jodhaa Akbar an epic romance. May be something more contemporary I'm tired of scouting for period costumes and properties. . A was produced in 1960 at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore The official budget . or JA is RS 40 crore gggror MA tailors came from Delhi, goldsmiths from Hyderabad, Kolhapur craftsmen for the crowns, ironsmiths from Rajasthan and footwear from Agra in JA over 80 elephants, 100 horses and 55 camels were used
