easy one from me. Who are your top 5 favorite music directors of all time? For each one, write one or two lines on why you like him/her.

My top 5 MD's are :

  1. S.D.Burman – the versatility in his compositions . The influence of folk music especially Bengali folk forms like bhatiali, baul etc gave the songs a very earthy feeling making the songs enchanting and enjoyable.
  2. Madan Mohan – the melody, the classical touch in his tunes and the selection of the right voice for the songs creating a perfect harmony.
  3. Salil Chowdhury – his uniqueness in each compositions. The experimentation with orchestra , the influence of Bengali music and the melody rhythm convergence makes his songs evergreen for me.
  4. RD Burman – very versatile – a man with a score for every mood and most important part is the way he fused rhythm and melody and the final products mostly have been mindblowing.
  5. Ismail Darbar – the freshness of his songs, the feel ,the way they grow on you and his focus on melody in this techno beat age.

Hello Adi,

Congrats and welcome to the "Amazing World of Problems".

1. Why are people so cirtical of singers and artistes when they themselves cannot utter a single tune?

When man was made, he was given a brain and the ability to think understand, analyze and express his thoughts and opinions. Criticism is nothing but expression of ones viewpoint . Many of us can't cook , but we comment on the taste. We all are not writers but we read books and opine on our likes and dislikes. Same with music too. You don't have to be technilaly proficient to comment. Its the ear that makes the judgement and passes it to the brain. The throat only expresses the thought. You should haver the ability to understand the finer points and then express your opinions.

2. What would you recommend to such persons so that they can mend their ways and enjoy life?

Every person has the right to express himself or herself. Likewise every person has the right to his or her choice. We may agree to the choices or we may not. But jsut because we do not like it does not make it totally bad or just because we like something makes it the best. its all to do with personal choice. So long everyone realises this fact ,respect it , behave accordingly and not pull out one anothers hair is OK. Learn to coexist..thats the final message.

Incidentally , recommending to "such persons" so that they mend their ways is also criticising their current approach...😉

3. Generally lovers of music are also gifted with greater understanding but on the other hand they could be dreamers too. How do you balance between being a practical person and a dreamer?

The fact that I am practical shows that I know the fine line that separates reality from an ideal world of my dreams. Realising that, accepting that, remembering to draw the line at the right point between idealistic and pragmatic world and making the best of what is available without compromising on integrity is what balancing the two worlds is all about.

Adi:
Which fictional character do you most identify with?
Which fictional woman would you say is the closest to being your soul-mate?
If you wrote a book, what would it be about?
If you could change just one thing in your life, what would it be?
Given a chance, which language would you like to speak fluently?
Could you identify 5 common traits in Bengalis?
If you could become a woman for one day what would you do?
If you are asked to evacuate your house within 5 minutes, what things would you carry with you?
