INDIAN playback singer S P Balasubramanium has blasted "reality shows" on Indian television channels. Balasubramanium was talking to journalists yesterday.
He has returned to Qatar after seven years to hold a concert tonight at the Doha Cinema. Expatriate forum Karnataka Sangha is organising the event. The show starts at 8.30pm.
"There is a lot of concocted drama involved in virtually every such show. These shows leave a lot of young children hurt."
He said no real or good purpose is served by channels holding such shows. "Truly speaking, I personally feel that the end results from such shows are not really genuine," said the singer.
Balasubramanium said that by airing these programmes the channels are not actually holding a talent hunt. "I am pained to say that such shows are certainly producing something else and not what exactly majority of music lovers are expecting," he said.
He said: "Sometimes, better actors have emerged from such shows than some of our film artistes."
Balasubramanium said technological advances in the music industry had actually killed the soul of real music.
"May be, it has given more opportunities to budding singers. But you should also consider the reality that the developments have also rendered a number of our genuine orchestra players virtually jobless," he pointed out.
Anybody with advanced music equipment can compose music, without any serious effort.
"It is true that a number of new singers have emerged in the world of playback singing. And some of them are extremely talented too. However, it remains to be seen how many of them survive," he said.
Balasubramanium recalled that until the arrival of new generation equipment in the industry, there existed a perfect synthesis between everyone involved in the making of a song.
"Singers, lyricists, music composers and last but not the least the orchestra players used to sit together and there was active involvement," he said.
Thus with very little equipment, such combinations could produce a song in less than six hours. "It is the irony of music today is that it takes at least three weeks today to produce a song," said the singer. Still it is a wonder that some good songs are born even while the soul of real music is lost."
Currently almost all singers are made to sing duets as "solos" at recording theatres and the rest is done by the mixing abilities of technicians.
"Interestingly, I and K S Chitra have sung together at a large number of stage shows but we have not sung together at recording theatres for more than four years," he recollected.
"In short, music has become a technical circus, with no real application from anyone involved." With a plethora of tricks, it's virtually a game of mathematics, he said.
He showered praise on Praveen Gorkhandi, his band leader.
"Once you see his band tomorrow, you will realise his class. Kannada singer Archana Udupa will also sing at the concert.
Asked about his long absence from Doha he said: "No useful opportunity came my way."
Balasubramanium said he had not performed at many concerts organised by overseas Kannada groups, even though he had participated in a number of shows hosted by Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam groups.
Karnataka Sangha president Arvind Patil, Raj Jyoti and V Mannagi were present.

Yeah....totally true! 😃
Only justified winners I've seen from reality showsare:

Abhijeet Sawant (he was better than others at any rate...though Amit Sana wud be fine, too)

Sanchita (she was better than other two finalists, but Pawni & Abhro were a li'l better than her)

Aneek (he and Amanat are equally gud & Raja is outstandiong within his genre...so it's okay. It wudn't matter to me if Amanat won either)

Overall results mein, only C-07 Agnipariksha results were satisfactory for me (eliminations included) amon all reality shows. But the dramabaazi was totally unnecessary!! 😕

But TRUE Winners were: Hemachandra, Nihira, Abhrokanti and off course Amanat.

Sad that we lost Mahammad Vakil totally but Parthiv Govil is making inroads with sensational singing.

With due respect to SPB, but how can reality show be the cause of downfall of genuine orchestration and technology advancement that has affected the musicians?

Lets face it, the fame that these reality singers earn in the 3-4 months is adequate enough to fetch them rotis for a long time to come courtesy of stage shows. They may not get breaks in films as playback singers, but go and ask any of those participnats and they will tell that they haven't really gone unnoticed. They become like local celebrities and totally cash on it.

The drama, yes that can be done without, but just that alone is not a reason enough to stop reality shows. As regards to the results, well the selection of winner will always be debatable. Whosoever is selected , the others will feel that someone else deserved more. Is theer a guarantee that unanimously all will agree, if it is seleceted by estemeed judges? 😉

The amount of exposure the budding singers get today , especially in this cut throat world of today, the older singers can't even think of in their times.

^^^ Adi, you missed the point, SPB hasn't linked reality shows to the sorry state of musicians, he has hinted that excessive use of technology is the culprit for the loss of soul of music churned out these days, and he is perfectly correct.

In fact SPB himself is conducting singing competitions in the southern TV channels involving kids and they are thousand times better than those on lil champs. One such popular show is called Ede thumbi Haadidenu(meaning heartfelt singing) on ETV Kannada and it is a refreshing experience, compared to the kitsch shown on Hindi channels.

There is no drama, no public voting, no mentor fights, only but pure singing and to top it, each week an esteemed guest from the music fraternity is invited for their valuable inputs which make it a cultured extravaganza.

Trishanku ji,

The title of the article says he blasts the reality shows. then there is a quote that says:
He said: "Sometimes, better actors have emerged from such shows than some of our film artistes."
Balasubramanium said technological advances in the music industry had actually killed the soul of real music.
"May be, it has given more opportunities to budding singers. But you should also consider the reality that the developments have also rendered a number of our genuine orchestra players virtually jobless
," he pointed out.
So its not very lucid as to who he blames and for what.

See, I totally like the old format of SRGM.But tell me, if that show format had really worked out commercially, why did they change it in the first place?

How many teenagers, preeteens were involved in watching the SRGM show? not many.

There are plenty of flaws in todays format, but it has reached out to the masses as well. Today a 8 year old takes interest as well as a 70 year old. Aneek's international fan club was set up on the insistence of a 9 year old boy ! Today, so many young population is impressed by Tujhse Naraaz nahi zindagi.. This song has existed for god alone knows how long, but how many of this new gen had really heard it before.

We always raved about laga chunari mein daag, or kuhu kuhu bole koyeliya or jhanak jhanak ..but how many of the new gen had really heard or taken interest before? I can vouch -hardly any. The reality shows have drama, gimmicks, and all kinds of ups and downs, but it has also aquired a broad viewership and through the participants songs have reached out to many .It has also educated the massesas well as classes and has reconnected them to songs. For the likes of me, who does not take interest in newage music, songs like in dino, zindagi mein kabhi koi aaye na rabba, or ajab si, maiyya maiyya, these would have remained an unknown if i hadn't heard them in such contests and taken inetrest.

There is a classy program , there is a massy program.. the class would always listen to songs of their choice, the mass would always listen to songs of their choice, but if not for these shows, the class and mass would never have met anywhere.

But the question is, do these musical shows really help a budding singer establish himself in the music world?
If a singer is really talented & good does he need to go through the exercise of these TV circuses to prove himself, whose main purpose is to make money for themselves at the end of the day. These shows are nothing but money making avenues for the channels & producers and the main feeling is that these youngsters are 'used' to achieve the producer's financial goals instead of promising a bright musical future.

Coming to stage shows, unless there is something different offered, something from his own repertoire of hit creations instead of crooning & performing the same old oft repeated numbers of somebody else's, how can we expect the artists to survive solely on stage show earnings?

Regarding exposure to new songs & connection of youngsters to old numbers especially in India, there is new revolution in the form of advent of number of FM radio channels with their 24/7 content, blaring new Hindi songs most of the time along with slots for old classics as well, reaching a wide area of coverage bringing back the era of AIR & vividhbharathi, so we need not depend on TV at all for our daily dose of music of any kind.
