salil ji this is one of the best posts i've read on this forum.. so thank you for it. and yes, i totally agree with you.. each one of the voters will have all sorts of likes and dislikes, biases and prejudices, whether it's looks, personality, sympathy, the elusive 'X' factor, region, religion, familial connections and in some objective ppl, sheer talent as well.. the best part is, there is room for all of these biases, likes and dislikes cos that's how human nature is..

the only problem i have is when ppl start taking negativity beyond limits. i can understand dislike for one particular contestant or mentor.. but it really boggles my mind when i see that ppl cross all limits of decency and fairness in degrading, even humiliating someone they don't like! why? just cos they don't like?? is so much antagonism worth something as commonplace as dislike?? many a times i've found myself cringing at the thought of coming to this forum cos the amount of hate i've seen here is unparalleled.. and to think this is a moderated forum!

then again, i try to reconcile myself to all this negativity and hatred.. it's also part of those biases just as it is part of human nature. maybe hatred for one is bigger than love of another for some.. each to his own i guess..

Exactly. Stop telling people how to vote. Its their time and their money, so they are free to spend it how they like.

I agree. There HAS been a lot of negativity lately. I would really appreciate it if people started supporting the contestants they like instead of bashing the ones they dislike. Besides the term "hate" is being used TOO many times!

Coming back to original topic...I wish it could be like the dance/singing competitions on Bengali channels. They may not be as successful, but the system is certainly much better! In those shows, there are two winners. The actual Champion chosen by a panel of judges and a Viewer's Choice Winner chosen through voting. This shud b the system in these reality shows too, coz u can't play around with people's careers!

I love this post. This forum has become all about bashing and putting their non-favorites down and a practical topic like this is very thoughtful of you. Here's my take on this.

I love your analogy about Taj and Beauty contests and I would actually even go to the extent of maybe let's say Oscars.. If an Indian movie is nominated for Oscars regardless of whether we like the movie or not, have seen it or not.. if we were given a choice we would be voting for our desi bollywood movie obviously. THAT, however, does not exactly make it a correct stance taken.

Personally, if I was given a choice to pick the winning movie for Oscars, I would not go for Eklavya because I simply did not like it. Similary, there have been times in world beauty contests where I have been satisfied with the results and would have done a fair elimination by not picking a non-deserving Indian girl. Place, however, is a little different. I would still pick Taj because it resides in my motherland. Plus, I would not be given an opportunity to go check out other places.

When you are given the opportunity to judge between right and wrong you should do so regardless of the region. I am sure most of us vote on the basis of other things. I am jsut saying that personally, besides the Taj analogy I would not be biased in the case of movies/beauty contest where I am given an opportunity to witness the doings of others as well.. and this exactly happens to be the case in SRGMP.

Salil bhai:

Great Post. Reserving this space. I have talked about this Taj issue before also. I don't remember which thread. But again great post.

I just wish that you did a little bit more thinking before screwing a state for 25 long years. 😆

Just kidding Jyoti bhai. Actually, your ID is so tempting that I can't resist myself. Please don't mind.

The points you have made are valid, and there is no way to eliminate the bias that comes with public voting. However, I do not think that its a bad thing to encourage unbiased voting, regardless of regionalism, nationalism, gender, etc. The public is given the right to determine the fate of these singers (to an extent), and naturally the title of the winner should be given to the person who most deserves it. I'm not saying that this will happen, it's foolish to think that (human nature doesn't given in that easily), but one cannot ignore the fact that India is crowded with regionalism, as has been obvious in other competitions as well (ie Indian Idol). To get people to realize that regionalism is not a positive thing isn't a bad idea, now whatever people do after reading that is their own business. But to say that India can never overcome regionalism is a wrong in itself, it doesn't hurt to try, does it?

Just my opinion 😳

First of all what is the pressing need to send a vote for such a show whose purpose is just to rake in as much money as possible in the garb of promoting music & discovering hidden singing talents.

But as we all know these very talented youngsters are forgotten & dumped by the producers once the show ends, earning only a pittance of a remuneration compared to the moolah raked in by the Channel, producers, Advertisers, Mentors, Phone companies, Mentors, guests(mostly filmy type whose use the popularity of the show to promote their own interests be it music albums or to be released films).

Further more the producers play with the emotions of public by instigating them, making them feel guilty for not voting to an eliminated or dangerzone contestant, projecting it as though some untold injustice being meted out by the Janta(like what happened subsequent to the Independence day episode).

The regionalism card, apart from the sympathy card of making a contestant land in the danger zone played smartly by the producers is just a tactic to incite the public to go into a mad voting frenzy which is all the more beneficial as far as revenue for the show is considered. A fine example is what happened in the rival show just ended, which ignited regional passion more than passion for your country.

Ultimately the winner of this show cannot in any instance called the champion of "Sangeet ka Pratam vishwayudh" because the actual competition is not at all concerning music, nor between the singers belting hindi film tunes, nor between the gurus of the gharana, but rather it is a voting contest between the fans of these contestants.

So not only there are double standards asking for votes to eliminate a contestant just because his mentor is mental, or to select a contestant just because he belongs to an other country, or just because she is a girl, or just because he/she is a simple human being with family problems, or just because he is a sufi kind of singer with no versatility, or just because he openly showed sarcasm, or just because the mentors always gave 10 points even for a mediocre performance, or just because........ come on there are too many double standards or i should say thousand standards which are detestable on this circus which makes a mockery of true Indian music.

My question finally is why should we vote at all?
