Controversy's favourite child - Salman Khan

Salman Khan is known as the original bad boy of Bollywood. And considering the number of legal cases in which Khan is currently involved it almost seems that the nickname was coined especially for him.

This morning a Lower Court rejected Salman's plea and upheld the five years imprisonment given to him by a Lower Court in Jodhpur. He is expected to surrender on Monday morning as he was away shooting for his film.

Controversies surrounding Salman

</>
• Salman's legal hassles began in 1997 when he was involved in a Chinkara poaching case in Ghoda farms in Rajasthan on October 11, 1997.

• In 1998, while in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, to shoot for a song sequence for Rajshri Films' Hum Saath Saath Hain, Salman and several co-stars went hunting in the nearby Thar Desert. The group strayed into a Bishnoi-dominated area, where Salman shot and killed two black bucks – an endangered species that is illegal to hunt.

• In 1999, the industry was abuzz with rumours that Salman Khan had physically abused his then girlfriend Aishwarya Rai. Rai's family in a complaint stated that they "should not be held responsible for any untoward incident involving the actor." This was however not the first time that Khan had been accused of ill treating his partner. Rumors had always existed that Salman had physically abused his former girlfriend, Pakistani actress Somy Ali which had caused her to flee the city and the industry.

• Thereafter Salman was accused of harassing Vivek Oberoi as Aishwarya had moved on and was dating Oberoi. It is believed that Khan had made numerous obscene and angry calls and sent smses to Vivek in one night causing him to hold a press conference the following day.

• In 2002 Salman Khan was caught in on of the biggest legal cases of his life. He was charged of killing one person and injuring three others when Khan allegedly drove into a group of homeless people sleeping on a pavement near a bakery in suburban Mumbai on September 28th. Despite the fact that there was a policeman in Khan's car given to him for protection from the mafia, the actor absconded from the scene. Although he later claimed that he felt his life was threatened by the mob that formed after the accident, some suspected he'd wanted to avoid a blood-alcohol test. Khan faces 10 charges, including causing death by negligent driving which carries two years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

• On February 17, 2006, the Chinkara case got Salman back into the limelight. He was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.

• On April 10, 2006, Salman was handed a five year jail term for hunting the endangered Chinkara. He was remanded to Jodhpur jail, and remained there until April 13, when he was granted bail. The case came up for hearing today (Aug 24) and as things stand Khan will be heading to jail on Monday, August 27th 2007.
