I started this post on the inside ride to the Auditions of Indian Idol 3!

Viwers would love to know actual events happening on their fav. show😉

: My Auditions in Short :

I loved first two seasons of Indian Idol & It also gave a direction to my hobby of music.

So I started learning Classical Music to participate & do better in Indian Idol 3.

BTW I am an Engineering student (just like Amit Sana & Karunya)😳😉

I gave Auditions for Indian Idol 3, twice time...

In my first attempt I went to Baroda & then went to Mumbai !!

In Baroda,

I was eliminated in first round where I went with plain clothes and without extra accessories!

Where I sang Vande Matram from Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Then I went to Mumbai

but wore designer shirt + hot jeans and had a "Gandhi topi" & "Bunch of Roses"!!

I had chosen Gandhigiri as the theme of I I Auditions!!

I was quickly selected for third round to perform in front of JURY of Famous 4!

I did not get selected by Javed Akhtar, Anu, Udit & Alisha !

Date 26 February, 11:00 pm, Place: Valsad - A small town of Gujarat.

A Train arrives at the railway station & a young guy boards the train with a small bag over his shoulder & a huge dream to rock the nation with his Sur !

The guy was Vijey Umang ( Jee haa...main naacheez ) & was headed to Baroda for Auditions of INDIAN IDOL on 27th February morning !

After reaching Baroda Station @ 3 am I had to make my way to the Auditions place.

At Auditions place this was the situation in Baroda around 4:15 am < 27th Feb >:

Around 100 to 200 young people were scattered around on footpath nearby with their bags as pillow under the huge sky with shivering cold !

As 5 of them & me just started queuing up in front of main gate...All other people came running down towards us to be first among the queue..

Guess what… The line was 250 people long in a Split-Second. If I was a minute late I would have been standing @ no. 251 instead of no.7

Still it was darkness & sun hadn't rise. In a very cold breeze we all had to stand till 7 am as it was the decided time to begin Auditions!

We people tried to talk to each other, Sing in group to keep all of us warm enough ! We also lit a camp-fire ..it was exciting !

And around 5:30 am....People had already started coming in huge volume & queue almost seen endless ( Must be some 1000 people in an hour ...)

Then came the Staff & Camera Crew of Indian Idol wearing blue uniform with the logo of Idol ...It was almost 7:30 am...

The queue was getting longer & longer every minute. All the Camera crew started searching in queue for people with awkward dresses & hairstyles...

They told all of us to shout "Baroda" & "Indian Idol" & Wave our hands to camera all together. We had to do this some 15 times until they got satisfied with this shot...< Remember this was at 7:30 & we were all tired of standing since 4am >

We were getting annoyed standing in the queue because it was already 8:30 am and Auditions hadn't started yet which were scheduled to be started @ 7.

And ... …

Here comes HUSAAIN...

He just seemed like an angel...He is damn fair..

He was wearing a skin tight Orange T-Shirt & I tell you he looks half handsome on TV then he actually is..

He was very humble & waved to us as we shouted his name!

He interviewed the first person in the queue & told first 20 people to enter the entrance gate with shouting & running like mad!!!

We gave this shot on Camera & our Auditions finally began @ 9 am...

1. Auditions that you witness:

The participant is shown in a long queue! He walks in , Gets stickered by crew !

Goes straight away in front of Jury, Sings a song or say few lines!

He is given the verdict whether he's selected or not !

Then Its Tears Time ... < Mostly of sorrow, sometimes of victory >

That's it !

And Now …

2. The real process of Auditions:

TV Viewers only see a tip of an iceberg when we talk about Indian Idol Auditions!

In Actual there are 4 Levels in Indian Idol Auditions...

Here they are...

> 1. Registration via SMS or 125 5525 portal ( It is MUST )

> 2. Pre - Casting Round # 1

> 3. Pre - Casting Round # 2

(There can be even more no. of pre - casting rounds which is at sole decision of Sony Channel.

SO it further increases no. of levels in Indian Idol Auditions !

I have stated 2 rounds as minimum only.

By d way this is most interesting level & TV Viewers are never shown these rounds! )

Level one: Registration for IDOL!

Objective for this level:

One has to obtain a CODE by SMS/Call by

Breaking through random selection

By SONY Channel officials

As we all know, SONY TV flashes a phone number like 2525 or 125 5525 for a call for entries before two months of starting date of show.

In that we have to go through computerized & voice automated registration process!

After you enter your profile & other needed info , they give you a 7 digit code ( e.g. 1234567)

Now...Here's the trick:

Getting 7 digit code doesn't mean you are allowed to enter Auditions!!

Out of all such registered codes,

Producers or say Sony Channel will randomly shortlist few codes.

No rules & nothing in this selection but shear luck!

So they tell you to register multiple times on 2525 or 125 5525 so your chance of being short - listed are raised.

They want you to be hanged & occupied on 2525 for the maximum time!

Now if you are short listed they again give you a code in form of (AB12345). It will be called Audition Number for you .

To know whether you are short listed or not you've to call again at 2525!

Here charges for this 2525 & other numbers are Rs. 5/Min & more ...

Out of which 66% money go to Sony & 34% go to Airtel !

Star VOI or Zee SRGMP doesn't have such process! They register by first come first serve basis on venue itself on day of Auditions. So you've just to be there!

Here Indian Idol's motive is only earning max money...

BEACUSE SUCH REG. PROCESS IS TOTALY UNUSEFULL IN WHOLE COMPETETION!

Then you have to go to city of Auditions with the CODE given to you.

You have stand in queue since previous night with till other morning which is the day of Auditions!

We skip the journey on how I managed to get in queue at the place of Auditions, What were difficulties,

What did I eat/drink with maintaining my place in queue ,

How did I enter venue After hours in queue ,

gave the code & got an Indian Idol contestant sticker ...

( A tough phase it was though )

Level two: Pre - Casting Round #1

Objective of this level:

This is most interesting & mysterious round!!!

IT IS NEVER COVERED BY CAMERAS!

In this round , you have to perform in front of "Casting Directors or say Producers" in time limit of 2-5 minutes.

Who are "Casting Directors or say Producers"?

They are person who are putting their money to create the show.

They are person who from totally non-music background.

You have never seen them on TV neither have heard their names!!

A Totally new face for you is going to judge you in 2-5 minutes.

This process is called Pre - Casting.

It is done in batches & each batch is made up of 10 contestants who have Indian Idol stickers on their chests.

But Wait...

As you perform a few lines of a song of your (sometimes their) choice,

You'll not get a SINGLE REMARK / JUDGEMENT!

You are also NOT ALLOWED TO ASK anything to Judges ("Casting Directors i.e. Producers")

But …

All 10 people of your batch will perform one by one.

After that, whole batch of 10 is taken away from the Judge ("Casting Directors i.e. Producers") to RESULT ROOM by a crew person of Indian Idol.

In RESULT ROOM he

(not the judge, but the same crew person who brought the batch to RESULT ROOM )

Would announce results by speaking up the code of contestants who are selected.

& would tell the rest to go!

No questions , No Answers , No Explanations !

RESULT ROOM is arranged in such a manner that its exit door is near exit from Auditions venue & they would just show you that door.

(They select only 1 person from batch of 10 & max. 3 sometimes. Selected ones are taken somewhere else)

So HERE,

1. Contestants are not allowed to communicate at all with Judges.

2. Contestants are NOT given any reason / explanation by Result announcer on why they were rejected.

In Addition, they place Cameras outside exit of RESULT ROOM.

Cameramen will come to rub salt in the wounds of rejected ones.

They will irritate the rejected contestants by closing their cameras on their face.

They will excite you to tell something on rejection ...

I firmly remember his words:

" Aap apni Bhadaas (Gussa) camera ke saamne nikaal sakte hai "

They will show that to add masaala to the Auditions episode.

TV viewers will laugh at it!

Level three: Pre - Casting Round #2

NO change...

Same process of Pre - Casting round # 1 will merely repeat for those lucky ones who made it to this point!

Again some unknown judges...

Again the batch of 10...

Again the order to get out ...( obviously...without explanation)

The people who pass both the Pre Casting Rounds are given a letter of invite...

They have to come the same venue but on another day with a condition...

They have to ...

wear same clothes & accesories to mantain continuty of the show !

So can you guess the real picture ...?

Yes...Its like this !

That shoot the queue's footage, crowd footage, participant standing in queue, group singing etc. footage on Pre Casting day

& mix it with...

contestant performing in front of panel of 4 famous judges (i.e. Jury round)

So Viewers feel that guy got straight to the jury!!

The real Golmaal of 2 terrific Precasting rounds is deleted from TV Episode !

After 2 precasting rounds they filter out 5000-10000 people's queue into just 50 to 100 people!

Famous 4 have to judge only these 50/100 person on Judge's day!

U can now imagine that all the funny people & besuras & dramatists cleared the pre - castings...

on price of ...

some really genuine singers rejected by the casting dir's who are not from musical background...

In next scene you'll know what the hell than these casting directors look out for...

Its the KEY to reach Jury round...

~~: Scene # 3: Coming Back from the rejection :~~

During whole thing, they are damn quick.

Rejected ones even don't realise what happened in 5 minutes !

5 minutes ago, They were performing for their dreams & Now...

They are even out of the Auditions venue & competetion as well...

without getting any remarks or words of judgement!

In my first try for Indian Idol, My mission ended right over here in 1st Pre-Casting Round.

And remember...I boarded the train @ 11pm previous night!

So I had 4 hours of sleepless night journey in 2nd class of a train...

5 hours of standing in the queue to make it IN @ 9am...

At 9.15 am, I am am OUT. In 15 minutes, my future gets decided, without me knowing what went wrong!!

And this wasn't only my situation...

It was situation of 8 other people of my batch!

It was situation of thousands of young aspirants who came to Baroda from Delhi, Nagpur, Aasaam, Hyderabad, Banglore, Some small towns and villages of India and from where not...

It was situation of many singers who sang beautifully as they had years of training in Classical Music!

All of them & me were having one thing in Common :

"What do we do to get selected ?"

Ofcourse, 'Singing Well' wasn't the Answer.

It was 27 Feb.

I returned home by the train that I got earliest!

I was totaly shattered & heart broken by this.

I was so dedicated & passionate to make it big in Music that,

I even thought of give up my studies for I I Auditions & take up Music as career.

But...

With GOD's grace, with my passion & support of naazdi - koeli ji - all others @ I-F...

I resurrected myself & decided to go to Mumbai Auditions on 1st April.

I used my wit, found a weakness in II Auditions process!

Vijey Umang at the Mumbai Auditions was someone with a difference!

He knew what exaclty was to be done!

And on 1st April...

Place was Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mumbai...

I MADE IT! I CRACKED 2 ROUNDS & MADE IT TO 74 OUT OF appx. 10,000!

I WAS GIVEN A LETTER OF INVITE TO PERFORM IN FRONT OF JURY OF THE FAMOUS 4 on 3rd April!

After 1st round, what happened with me in Mumbai?

What was the 'key' to crack II Auditions?

Where did the selected ones of 1st Pre-Castg. Round go ?

What are next in I I Auditions ?

The time period of 27 Feb to 30 March remained very crucial for me!

That 1 month was the real journey for me - the journey within!

I was having a conflict within me which was even intense than both World Wars!

One part of me took me to the darkest ends of life,

One part was screaming to me about my dreams, my passion...

~~: Scene # 4 :~~

~~: THE KEY to selection in Indian Idol Auditions :~~

In few weeks after Baroda Debacle, The inner part of me won over the other one!

I started thinking calmly & I was aware that Mumbai Auditions are still to be done on 1st April!

I went to flashback & Recalled the Baroda Auditions in front of Casting Directors.

I found out following points after deep thinking :

1. To get selected in Pre - Casting, One must have a story for him/her

which can fetch TRP's since Indian Idol is a show

which ENTERTAINS people in the good name of Music.

2. No one's gonna care how well do I sing neither What are my achievements in Music.

If I can
--dress funny,
--entertain people by singing totaly besura,
--create a story of mine which brings tears and sympathy of viewers,

OR

If I am
--A Starson,
--A John Abraham Lookalike with a 1500MW smile,
--A person with dashing looks & lady killer costumes

Then and only then I I Staff will care to select me.

Bottom line is that...

They are in SEARCH OF A TV PERSONALITY - A Person who can add viewing masaala to their show!

Not a singing gem!

I also recalled the stories of Panna gil, Ravinder Ravi etc.. which further supported the truth told above!

No probs man! Let them know my creative talent also if they'r not after my singing!

I just thought to take a concept for Auditions..

A Concept that is different from the masses..

A concept that is 100% Veiwing masaala..

I Came out with doing Gandhigiri for Indian Idol Auditions.

I would bring together Indian Idol & Gandhiji in this Auditions.

I reached to this concept in some this way :

"The present day India faces a lot of problems like corruption etc. & Gandhigiri is the best cure to it.

In short Gandhiji is the Real Indian Idol for todays India.

So I decided to bring gandhigiri & Indian Idol Auditions together.

I have put on totaly western clothes as I represnt young generation.

I have also put on a gandhi cap & roses to show that young generation also welcomes the good old ideals."

This was my concept in all which was sureshot to hit the target!

II-Crew would select me at once since such concept can fetch good viewers and makes good Episode matter.

Now I started rehearsals & riyaaz again keeping in mind the date of 1st April.

And yes..

btw I also had to go through that registration on 2525 again for Mumbai Auditions.

I worked harder to get the Sur and more than that the Cocept rehearsals near to right!

I had 3 weeks of March for it.

So what was the pay-off for my 2nd innings...

What did Mumbai had in store for me...

What is next in my quest ...

Let's see who wins in my battle with destiny.

I got the registration code well in time since phone lines of Mumbai were closing on 21 March.

I was given the date of 1^st April 2007 for my Pre Casting rounds.

In Mumbai…

31,1 &2 were the dates for Pre Casting rounds & 3,4 April were the Judge's day.

TV viewers see footage from the Judge's day only!

So I begun my journey from Valsad to Mumbai again…

The same guy with same great musical dream but with somewhat down with the reality.

Train started off towards Mumbai on 31^st March night!

The Date - April ONE, 2007

The Time - 05.15 AM

The Place - Dadar Railway Station of Mumbai City

The City of dreams is begining to welcome another day with sunrise about to take place.

Most of People of this Indian city of dreams -Mumbai, were still finding their way with dreams in last hours of sleep.

For them it was just another day and another number on the calendar...

But for one youngster, The sun of 1st April was special..

It was coming with lots of hope and dreams attached to it..

A Sunrise, that was routine for others BUT Unique for that youngster.

Yes.. That youngster is me.

I had the date with my destiny on 1st April in City Of Mumbai.

I started from my place towards Mumbai on previous night.

Though I never had fear or frustration neither any negative feelings..

But I started to worry when my train was running an full hour late due to repairing work on tracks by the railways..

An hour late at the Audition venue means at least 500 place back in the queue of contestants..

After the worried journey in train, I finaly reached my destination an hour late,

Time was 05.15 O'clock in the morning.

I still remember the very moment when I placed my feet on Mumbai Railway Station..

I closed my eyes and just took name of the almighty..

Since I knew what I was heading to... It was the dream of my life !

I really hurried on my way to Audition venue that is RAVINDRA NATYA MANDIR.

When I reached the venue, it was already 150 people long queue.. (Time was 5.30 AM)

Most of them were sleeping on the footpath since previous evening..

And to add into my worry, I still had to reach a cabin nearby to change & get freshed up for the Auditions..

So Did I make it in the queue ??

Did queue got longer when I was getting dressed up a few blocks away ??

Coming up : My experience in 2 Pre Casting Rounds on 1st April

So it was 1st april morning..

I had already reached Ravindra Natya Mandir around 5.30 am

I just went to get ready in Audition Clothes..

I had that Gandhi Topi (Which Arun Gawali & Mumbai's dabbawala's also wear )

And a Bunch of Red roses in hand.

When I returned with all my get up done, Queue had almost doubled.

Time was 6.15 am & Queue's end was in a ground nearby. There were atleast 800 people and I was after them.

Gates were to be opened at 7 am officialy & so I had a little time to rest. (Offcourse, standing in the queue)

I thought to practice a little bit of my song & more than that the script..

Yes, I had prepared a script on Gandhgiri & Its connnection to Indian Idol 3.

I had kept it as my ACE since it was gonna b the turning point..

It was gonna seperate me from the crowd...

But In my run from Valsad to the place in the queue, I forgot one thing...

That was hunger...

I was feeling very low at energy & almost felt like collapsing...

I wasn't even finding it easy to stand in the queue...

I felt so bad that Oh! What have I done...

The most important moment of my life is closing in & I'm in a bad shape..

All sorts of fears started gripping in my mind & practicing was a far cry in this situation..

I feared wether I've just ruined my chances even before entering Auditions..

May be I've lost a golden opprtunity by forgetting to eat properly..

Will my dream end even before it is born ??

Will I perform well even when I've not practised today ??

All such fears struck so strongly that, I almost believed that I will not make it..

I felt like going back to home..

It was a tricky situation...

I decided to forget everything for a while & started to chill with others who stood in queue ahead of me..

I was unaware of what magic this was gonna do for me..

I started to behave like I was just passing by & wasn't to be Auditioned...

Guy standing ahead of me was a drop out from Fame X & came from Pune..

Folk was really a nice guy & was traditionally marathi..

His name was Sachin so I just mimmiced in voice of Sachin Tendulkar...to pull him a little bit!

All people nearby joined us in the fun & I really got lost with it..

There was also another guy whom I MUSt Mention..

He was a typical dude of Mumbai the metro...

Dressed up in Hot Jeans with a happening hairdo & sunglasses..

BUT the fun part was that he didn't know a single thing about Indian Idol..

He also didn't know Who was Abhijeet / Sandeep..

He didn't know the rules & format..

Neither did he know, what song was he gonna sing..

(For a while, I thought the fellow is lieng)

But to our surprise, He told he was passing by & liked the Name -Indian Idol so joined queue...

We all started to pull of jokes and some group songs ..

Time was flying quickly & Gate were going to open soon..

Meanwhile, the hunger did linger around in back of my mind..

Low Energy was still a problem.

But all the fears had gone & I sort of felt like not Caring..

"Jo bhi hoga, Dekha Jaayega!"

And at 7 am, Gates opened, Queue started moving forward.

Crew were more organised in Mumbai then Baroda and they really speeded up..

They were letting 100 people every 10 minutes..

As the queue moved, I & the group also moved from the ground to the footpath.

This Footpath is the compound wall of Ravindra Natya Mandir.

Time : 8 AM

Still some 300 people were ahead of me but I was able to see the gate..

That Gate seemed like my gate to the future..

No one ever could imagine what I felt seeing the Open Gates of Ravindra Natya Mandir.

The atmosphere near Gates on footpath was really hot.

It was filled with lots of group singing with camera & crew running here n there to catch it.

I was enjoying all kind of stuff...

I mean there were the classical maestroes practising their art...

Then there were the beautiful girls with sweet voices...

And there were the tuneless freaks! They actually threatened us ...

Listen us a few minutes & take en route to the hospital.

The Camera Team & Volunteers of Indian Idol were making the most out of them.

I was silently watching the crew picking up the special ones with funky n filmy costumes and making them sing in group..

Then suddenly the queue moved forward upto 50 places quickly..

Remember, I was in the get up that was unique in the queue..

Funky Shirt with Hot Jeans like a promising 21st century youngster...

And A Humble smile on the face + A Bunch of Red Roses in the hand and offcourse...

The Gandhi Topi - My ACE.

Now I was directly into the limelights...

I was in an area filled with 2 camera teams & 5-6 Volunteers searching for their Indian Idol.

A Person who was Reality Producer (As his ID Card said) approached me with his cameraman...

"Aap bataiye aapke is get up ke pichhe ka raaz"

Suddenly the people in queue & passers by circled around me...

I was totaly the centre of all's attraction..

I simply started blurting out my script according to my plan..

I didn't fumble once..

Neither did I made a mistake in the expressions..

Here I go ..

" Main Indian Idol ke Auditions me gandhigiri ki theme le kar aaya hoon...

Kyun ki Mere hisaab se Baapu hi sahi maayno main India ke Idol hai...

Young generation bhi baapu ko bahut respect kati hai aur isiliye..

Maine Hip Hop Kapde aur sir pe Gandhi topi rakhkhi hai..

Main unki taraf se Indian Idol ke is munch par apne vichar desh ko kehna chahta hoon...

Indian Idol iske liye ek badhiya platform hai..

Aur yeh Gulaab ka phool ...

Aap ke liye. "

I ended my short speech with posing a rose in front of the camera like I was giving it to Audience..

And you guess it right...

BINGO...The crowd starts applauding...

I could see the awe in eyes of both, the producer & the camerman as well..

Then they asked me to sing something ...

I simply rendered the "Vande Matram" of Lage Raho Munnabhai in full voice & sur...

Apllauds again...

To my surprise, I could sing really well inspite of low energy..

I was successfull to do justice to the aalaap & rest of the part of the wonderull Sonu Song..

Then they also asked me if I can play something...

I fetched out my Mouth Organ (Harmonica) & played "Aane char aane"

All the ppl around were clapping to the beats with me...

And the atmosphere was like filled up with pure music and fun..

To my joy, I was the center of it...

In whole thing I never got troubled by fear or less energy...

You can say that it was completely spontaneous.

After my convincing performance, the crew congratulated me.

They noteed down My name,City & Reg. No. & sent it via wireless walky talky to the other crew people

who were inside the Auditions venue

I was assured by the crowd around me that you're gonna go a long way.

These crew persons don't note behave like this to all..

Prepare to celebrate..

But I quickly reminded myself to stay down.

I was still in the queue & hadn't faced the real judges.

It was 100 places from the gates now.

Queue had stopped moving in for a while & I had this wonderfull beginning already..

Now all people were initiating a chat with me & I mingled with them for a while..

But

A Surprise ....

Another volunteer with II Crew's Unifrom came to me & asked to come aside from the queue...

He came with a pen and paper & he interviewed me..

I was already feeling like a contestant of Indian Idol..

He interviewed me in such a manner that I was gonna be a star..

After noting down the details he went away..

And that's not all!

Such incident further increased my popularity in the queue.

As I was getting used to it, Another fellow came searching me

& I was like mann...

I've made it..

I was interviewed by II Staff around 5-6 times before I entered the gate.

People around me had already started congratulating me..

One fellow literally took my Phone Number & Address..

He told "If you become Indian Idol some day, dont forget me!!"

I really assured him & also appealed him to vote for me if I'm a finalist...

In this electric atmosphere, the gates opened & I was now about to enter the Audition Venue...

And yes, With all my energy, I entered the gates & reached to the next level of queues..

I was standing in the premises of Ravindr Natya Mandir..

The same place that produced Abhijeet Saawant & Sandeep Acharya...

The Same place that witnessed Theatre rounds of Indian Idol 1 & Indian Idol 2..

Big logos, huge posters & lots of cameras were staged over here...

No. of I-I Crew person in here was very high..

They were running here and there a lot to make sure that Auditioned happen the right way..

I looked around it for a while in an awe..

And most of the people in my queue were doing the same..

This queues were directly headed to Audition Room...
