PLAYBACK ARTISTES THAT SOUNDED JUST LIKE THE ACTORS ON THE SCREEN!!
Happened to read in some paper so thought of compiling and sharing with my inputs:
Listen to a song "Tum jo mil gaye" from Haste zakhm..which is Rafi dominated song, but towards the end, admist the sound of the crashing of the sea waves, is a small Lata piece, where she has almost hummed the song. The song was picturized on priya rajvansh ..it did look as if the actress was singing herself. These great singers adapted their singing to try to match the actors on the screen, with some monumental results.
Like Asha Bhosale singing for Madhubala's face. Also Asha's seductive voice to Helen's gracefully sensuous persona was a perfect combination.
Rajesh khanna backed by Kishore Kumar, Shammi Kapoor backed by Mohammad Rafi, Nutan backed by Lata, are some more good examples. Somewhere along the line, it stopped mattering any more if the singer matched the actor or not.The songs themselves started getting a true life of their own ,and the picturization, the situation, the execution gaining the importance, while matching of voice stopped mattering entirely.
Then yet there were the voices that never sounded like anyone at all—none of the actors could come close to the voice, yet the songs became famous as did the singers.Take Bhupinder Singh and Talat mehmood as two glaring examples. Infact Manna De, has sung the song "Ae bhai zara dekh chalo" from Mera Naam Joker, the similarity between their voices is strinking. Surprisingly Manna de never comes to mind as voice of Raj Kapoor, though he actually sounds closer to him. Likewise, Dev saab was better presented by Hemant Kumar than Rafi in terms of being a closer match soundwise.
Ofcourse few sadly got type cast as the only actor's voice like Mukesh was known as voice of Raj kapoor , Sudesh bhosale did a tremendous job with Amitabh 's unique voice. who would believe that "meri makhana" from Bhagbaan is not sung by Amitabh. Is it his downfall that he could emulate Big B's voice so perfectly?
I leave it here so that we can carry forward this discussion with many more inputs and insights spanning from the old era to the new one. i am sure musical people around here would like to throw some light on this😊
