'My style of composing didn't get me... '

My Space
Vishal Bhardwaj
If I wasn€™t a filmmaker, I would€™ve been a music composer (which, in fact, I still am). And if I hadn€™t been so interested in music, I€™d have been a cricketer. In fact, for a long time in my younger days, cricket remained my single biggest passion, even more so than cinema or music. I spent hours honing my skills in the game. I was quite sure that one day I€™d play for India.

But then music took over as my father was a musician. Blood runs thicker than cricket, I guess. I left my hometown, Meerut, for the land of dreams to become a music director.

But I continued to be passionate about cricket. One of the things that brought me close to my musical idol, Lata Mangeshkar, was our mutual passion for cricket. I remember while composing melodies like Paani paani re, Tum gaye sab gaya, Geela geela pani and Chai chap chai chapaak chai, we€™d spend hours talking about the game. Lataji is really into cricket, and I€™d often be stumped by her knowledge.

Though Maachis became a super hit, my unique style of composition didn€™t get me very far. That€™s when my love for filmmaking surfaced in a big way. I took a tentative step into cinema with Makdee, then Maqbool happened. There was no looking back.

But at heart, I still remain a musician. To be honest, I became a filmmaker only so I could employ myself as a music composer. I remember how I€™d record incidental music on my mobile while hunting for locations for Omkara. Am I that passionate about filmmaking? I am. Today, my calling card proudly reads Film Director. But I remain a music composer at heart. Cricket? I still time to play whenever I can, though obviously not that regularly. Today, when I see my son Aasman being equally passionate about cricket and music, I wonder if he€™ll end up becoming a filmmaker like me too!

Thanks. Good to know he'll always remain a musician. His songs from Maachis and Hu Tu Tu are wonderful. He doesn't compose for too many films but hey, its quality that counts.

Tfs. Gosh, he is so talented. He makes amazing films, my favorite current director. And he composes some great music, very rooted like Maachis, Omkara, and Maqbool. Though I honestly loved the underappreciated Paanch, which you can find on Raaga. Shows how he experimented a ton in the mid 90s with a new sound.
