In the ancient times the definition of cast was different than today. Every one who learnt Vedas and other sciences were called Brahmins by Karma. People who had strengths and also some intellect were called Kshtriayas. Vaishyas were very good in math and business. Now the people of lower education were called shudras. They had necessary physical strengths but no intellect. This is by definition of Karma yoga. There were no Dalits at that time in my opinion. These were the people who became the crust of foot soldiers and were used as front line sacrificial lives. They were either self trained or trained by superior officials in only one type of weapon. Even today every army contains soldiers with minimum training. And like some one else mentioned, they were given only crude weapons. Soldiers who were better in that art were promoted to horse riding soldiers with few more weapons. They were not necessarily kshatriyas per say. They were poor and needy people who had to wager their life to earn livelyhood. Now one word that was used in one of the earlier post was inappropriate. "Brahmins" were behing the art of warfare. It was a "Ntty" not "Kootnity". My understanding of Sanskrit says that Koot means bad. When two armies fought they had to have plans of action. That is tought by "Neetishaastra". What Shakuni Mama used was kootneeti. He used croocked means to win the dice game. I hope I answered some of your questions and clarified some misgivings.

Gauri, I am not Jayashree. That is my wifes name I use at my sons home. When I am in my own home I use "corvallissi" as blog name. I should have clarified before writing I guess. Varsha Tai calls me "Nanubhai" or "Govindbhai". This is just to clarify the name confusion.

Thanks Jayshree. It makes lot more sense. At least I was thinking and guessing in the right direction. I was trying to avoid using term Shudra....hence used Dalits......after Mandal commission and recent quota fiasco...I just wanted to stay away from this caste ordeal but you explained it effectively. Thanks dear!
