Even the heavens have wept: Bismillah Khan

World-renowned shehnai maestro Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan had done a lot of his practice at the 400-year-old Sankat Mochan temple that became the target of Tuesday's twin blasts, which left 20 dead and over 100 injured.

With Varanasi swinging back to normal within 24 hours of the blasts - temples reverberating with the dangling of bells in the same pitch as the echoing 'azan' for Friday prayers from mosques, Bismillah Khan has a reason to smile.

Several big and small social organizations including the powerful student lobby of Benaras Hindu University have not only unequivocally condemned the incident but also demonstrated their assertion for peace and harmony through peace marches in different parts of the city.

Perched on the second floor terrace of his ancestral home in a crowded Varanasi locality, Bismillah Khan is happy that the miscreants have not succeeded in their ultimate design. He has also played several times outside Varanasi's most revered landmark - Kashi Vishwanath temple.

"I have played umpteen times and practiced for hours at the Sankat Mochan temple. It has a very special place for all who have some association with Varanasi," the octogenarian maestro said.

"Those behind the bombing were clearly aiming to disturb the communal harmony of this ancient city; but little did they realize that what they did was seen by all sections of society as an attack on humanity," he pointed out.

"Even the heavens have wept for what was done to vitiate the serenity of this city of Ganga," he remarked, while referring to the incessant showers that continued from morning until the afternoon in Varanasi.

"I am proud of this city, which is anointed by the holy Ganga waters, where there is no distinction between Hindus and Muslims", he said, adding, "For us here, there has always been one God – call Him Allah or Ishwar or Ram."

Khan terms the attack as an 'obvious handiwork of anti-national and anti social element.'

"The manner in which both Hindus and Muslims have stood together at this crucial juncture and have refused to fall into the trap of disruptive forces has once again shown that Varanasi will never allow such forces to ever succeed in their nefarious designs," he adds.

Bismillah Khan celebrates 91st b'day

VARANASI: Bailed out from near penury by admirers, Bharat Ratna shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan on Saturday cut a 91-kg cake in a birthday celebration here belated by four days in protest against the March 7 terror strike.

Khan turned 91 on Tuesday but deferred the party on account of it being Chehellum, 40th day of mourning of the slaying of Prophet Mohammad's grandson Imam Hussein, and to protest the Sankat Mochan temple and Cantonment Railway Station blasts that rocked the temple town early this month.

Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, who was to present the monthly cheque of Rs 10,000 he had announced from his personal earnings, could not attend the function due to commitments in New Delhi.

However, several hundred people wished the renowned musician "Happy Birthday" while he was presented a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh by Sulabh International president Bindeshwar Pathak and Rs 50,000 by a media couple Shivnath and Nina Jha who are ardent fans.

Ustad Bismillah Khan was born in a small village in Bihar about 60 years ago. He spent his childhood in the holy city of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga, where his uncle was the official shehnai player in the famous Visvanath temple.

It was due to this that Bismillah became inclined for the Shehnai. At an early age, he familiarized himself with various forms of the music of UP, such as Thumri, Chaiti, Kajri, Sawani etc. Later he studied Khayal music and mastered a large number of ragas.

Ever since Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar introduced Indian music to the West, a number of Indian musicians have been invited to perform abroad. It was therefore hardly surprising that a musician of Bismillah Khan's caliber should be one of them.

The Government of India bestowed on him the title "Padmashri"; later he was further honoured by the title "Padmabhusan", and now the "Padmavibhusan" has been conferred on him. In-spite of being glorified in this manner he remained as modest as ever. When invited for a recording he always came without demur. Ustad Khan sahib has been conferred with "Bharat Ratna" award by the Govt. of India.

Lata And Ustad Bismillah Khan To Share Stage
August 9, 2006 is going to be a historic date for Bollywood fans and the Indian nation. It on this fateful day that the whole nation will witness the historic show 'India Gate Salutations 2006' where legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and 91 year old Bismillah Khan will perform commemorating all the martyrs of India. The show quite appropriately will take place in India Gate in New Delhi and will also include political luminaries like Sonia Gandhi.

Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan will be the oldest Bharat Ratna recipient and wants to be part of this event as the year 2006 marks 75 years of India Gate which was built in 1931. In fact Ustad Bismillah Khan also performed on 15th August 1947 (I don't need to tell you what that date signifies!) at Red Fort. Truly historic isn't it?

This is a review about a unique personality and one of India's greatest musical legends Ustad Bismillah Khan and not Ustad Amir Khan.I am sorry for this mixup......

Shehnai
The Shehnai is perhaps the most popular of all the instruments in Indian music because it sounds extremely sweet. It is an ancient wind instrument played all over India. It is played morning and evening at the time of prayer in most big temples,
< marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" src="http://www.mouthshut.com/INCLUDES/CONTENT/advt/RR_center_creativei.aspx" border="0" height="250" scrolling="no" width="300"> <BR></>

during holy festivals, and on all auspicious accasions. The sound of a Shehnai at once fills the atmosphere with a soothing sweetness and sublime peace. This small instrument, hardly two feet long, produces magic notes that hypnotize listeners.

Bismillah Khan Childhood
Bismillah Khan, the most outstanding and world-famous Shehnai player, has attained astonishing mastery over the instrument. The legendary Shehnai maestro, a man of tenderness, a man who believes in remaining private and who believes that musicians are supposed to be heard and not seen. The legend was born on 21 March 1916. His ancestors were court musicians in the princely state of Dumraon in Bihar and he was trained under his uncle, the late Ali Bux 'Vilayatu', a shehnai player attached to Varanasi's Vishwanath Temple. It was Khan Sahib who poured his heart out into Raga Kafi from Red Fort on the eve of India's first Republic Day ceremony. He spent his childhood in the holy city of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga, where his uncle was the official shehnai player in the famous Visvanath temple. It was due to this that Bismillah became interested in playing the Shehnai. At an early age, he familiarized himself with various forms of the music of UP, such as Thumri, Chaiti, Kajri, Sawani etc. Later he studied Khayal music and mastered a large number of ragas.

Bismillah Khan embodies in himself and his divine music the great efflorescence of a secular spiritual heritage. A tradition which finds no contradiction in the ustad, a devout muslim, playing the shehnai every morning at the Kashi Balji temple with the same piety with which he reads his namaz.

If you are going to Ustad Bismillah Khan's concert for a single line melody meditation, then you are mistaken. No, it is not easy to close your eyes and meditate while Ustad is performing. He does not give any chance to a yogi to muse nor supports a delirious dreamer. He demands your full attention. He is a yogi himself who is creating the vibrations of a grand sadhana. You have to be completely awake while listening to him. You have to be mentally prepared to take such an enormous experience. A half hearted or a casual goer to a concert hall might fail to know him, truly. Actually, it is not the instrument – shehnai, it is Khan sahib who reverberates in a concert hall. No wonder that shehnai as an individual musical instrument was never played in classical music conference of India till Ustad Bismillah Khan appeared in the scene and it may not be played anymore as he would be gone. It is different thing that shehnai would be played as usual at auspicious occasion but will there be anyone after Ustad sahib who will be able to open a music concert with his overpowering shehnai? Will there be anybody to bear the flag of the wizard of shehnai, Ustad Bismillah Khan? This question remains unanswered………
