To define tonal quality, to me it would be based on three factors: uniqueness, freshness and power.

Uniqueness: None of the SRGMP or EMAET singers had a perfectly unique voice, a voice which we haven't heard, but many singers came close to having voices which didn't resemble any particular singer and it took shape of the singer they sang.

Hemu and Sharib came somewhere close, Vishwaas on days he sings well comes close. In girls, Ujjaini was the only one whose voice is hard to classify and its a good voice. Nihira sounds a lot like Alka ji type but is versatile because she can sing an Asha Tai song but still when she sings songs by Sunidhi it loses the beauty. Himani again is super with Sunidhi songs but will have problem with Shreya songs.. Ujjaini falls in Gayatri Iyer and Mahalaxmi category, who can handle both types which is great. Hrishikesh also has a unique voice and he maintains his original voice when he sings.

Twinkle and Rajeev have 'different' voice, which aren't conventional voices and I think with good training they might come of some use.

Freshness: I felt that the younger the singer voice, the fresher their voice sounded. Thats the reason in top 5 of Challenge, Himani, Nihira, Hemu, Vinit sounded more fresh than Debojeet. Debo's voice was great but somewhere it was reminicent of Kumar Sanu. Vinit though sounded a lot like Sonu, there was innocence in his voice which made it sound fresh. In EMAET, Ujjaini, Aishwarya, Sanchali, Sinchan sound fresh.

Power: This is the factor that defines Tonal quality ultimately and a lot of singers in SRGMP C05 had it. Debojeets voice though is soothing, it was powerful. Vinit ofcousre showed us that power in Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya and the like. Hemu's nahin saamne was a clear proof of his power. Himani's Chittiye and Nihira's Kehna Hi Kya, Ujjaini's Black performance and Sharib's Aashiq Banaya Aapne clearly showed the power in their voices.

Hrishikesh and Prajakta have good power in thier voice esp. Hrishikesh.. his throw is superb. Sinchan and Irfan have good power too in their voices when they give a good performance and so does Saptak and Vishwaas.

So if it is to evaluate on all three factors, I'd have to say: Hemu, Sharib, Ujjaini, Hrishikesh, Nihira (in no particular order)

Madhavi - respect your comments, but Debojit like Kuma Sanu 😕😕😕 Sanu is waaay tooo nasal 🤢

I would say Debo's voice is more influenced by Kishore'da and Hemanta'da at times

qwerty ji, that I can't say !!

Debu's voice isn't fresh but it defn. isn't stale..

I didnt like him much till I heard his Ek Haseena Thi.. I was so impressed by that performance that I heard it like 10 times and then went forward and saw Hemu's Nahin Saamne which was defn. better..but to me, that was Debu's best performance...

I am glad for him =D !

Qwerty - well say what you have to say and your opinion really does not matter to me at all... I would just ask you to read my post carefully before stating anything - I said Debojit' s voice is more influenced by Kishore'da and Hemanta'da and thats it... And many forum members here will agree to that.. and does not matter if you don't.. All that you are interpreting beyond this - well thanks to your imagination and musical sensibilities

Jaya ji,

You are right. Sorry for the comparision between Debo and Sanu.. he sounds more in the Hemant Da and Kishore Da mode..

Wow:

I left for a meeting and what a discussion. Thanks for all of the coments.

For those of you who don't know, I am definitely a didi or auntie -- mom
of two!

Thanks to Jay and Madhavi and others for their comments.

Debo should not be compared to Sanu as his voice IMO is richer. As for
Debo being Kishore, Hemanta and Manna Dey rolled into some Bong
fantasy -- well I think that he is diverse but no so diverse. But Debo has
classical training and that bodes well for some versatility later.

I think that when HR says new original voice and fresh tonal quality I
myself am confused given that his top picks in C2005 were Joyeeta and
Dilshad (talk about the old folks sound!). But I love the possibility of new
voices to breathe life into the soundtracks. When Shaan and KK came up
it was so great to hear different voices. I think that they really added to
the freshness of the Dil chahta hai soundtrack.

Excuse me Qwerty - I guess Madhavi was talking to me here.. Also, earlier I was talking to Madhavi.. Not sure, why you have this habit of cutting across conversations... And as far as opinions about legends go, well we all know that legends to you are '2nd and 3rd tier singers who were never successful.. So, lets not even discuss legends here, not atleast with you! And if you thought that it was Shanu and then Shaan who come close to legendary Kishore'das voice quality, I would rather suggest you to go back and listen to Kishore'da again, possibly you will remember what he really sounded like

Debu has a very soothing voice probably the influence of rabindra sangeet but he does complete justice to the kishorda songs.. remember rim jhim geere sawan.. mein hoo jhoom jhoom jhoomroo and of course ek hasina thi..

are u kidding!!! He is nowhere remotely close to either of these...we should realize what we are talking when we are talking about legends!! The only one besides shanu who can come close to KK is possibly Shaan..he has a terrific tonal quality....
