My brother is my role model, says Tulsi Kumar(INTERVIEW)

Saturday, April 15th, 2006 at 12:43 pm

Mumbai - Tulsi, T-Series baron Bhushan Gulshan Kumar's sister, has ventured into playback singing with 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' and says she always wanted to be a singer.

'Ever since I can remember, music has interested me. Even as a child I would keep humming songs. One day, dad (Gulshan Kumar) heard me and loved my voice. He suggested that I take up singing professionally. I was just six years old then.'

Tulsi started her singing career with devotional songs, reports Bollywood Trade.

'I come from a very religious family and I am a religious person. I first wanted to seek the blessings of god before kick-starting my career. That's why I got into devotional songs.'

In her home production 'Humko Deewana…', she lends her voice to Katrina Kaif in the title song with Himesh Reshammiya.

Excerpts:

Q: When did you decide to pursue singing as a career?

A: Ever since I can remember, music has interested me. Even as a child I would keep humming tunes of songs. One day dad heard me and loved my voice. He suggested that I take up singing professionally. I was just six years old then but I knew I wanted to be a singer. I joined the Suresh Wadkar Academy and now for the last four years, Arvind Jha has been my guide.

Q: How supportive was your family about this decision?

A: It was my father's dream to see me sing. Even my mother has consistently encouraged me and helped me to remain focused.

Q: You started off with devotional songs. Why the shift to mainstream songs?

A: I come from a very religious family and I am a religious person. I first wanted to seek the blessings of god before kick-starting my career. That's why I got into devotional songs. I have sung for around six-seven devotional albums.

Also, I have done a lot of remixes and sung numerous cover versions. So I wanted to experience the whole gamut of songs before I actually get into mainstream songs.

Q: Will devotional songs take a back seat?

A: No, not at all.

Q: Which is the first Hindi film song you recorded for? How was the experience?

A: The first ever song I recorded for a Hindi film was the title song of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'. Anu Malik, who has scored the music for the film, was very patient and made me feel very comfortable. I sang it along with Sonu (Nigam). The song has shaped up really well and is rocking the charts.

Q: Who is your favourite singer?

A: From the previous lot of singers, I adore Lata Mangeshkar-ji and Asha Bhosle- ji. From the current lot, I really like Sonu Nigam.

Q: Which is your favourite song?

A: I like all the songs by Lata-ji. But my favourite is 'Chand phir nikla' from the movie 'Paying Guest'.

Q: Any role model?

A: I look up to my brother. He has worked very hard from a very young age and faced a lot of difficulties. He has inspi

red me to work hard and make it on my own merit.

Q: Future projects?

A: I have sung a song 'Mohabbat ke' for 'Aksar, which has just been released. Although I sang first for 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye', the song for 'Aksar' released first with Himesh Reshammiya.

My track from 'Tom, Dick and Harry' has also just been released. I am also singing for Priyadarsan's 'Chup Chupke' releasing on June 9.

Q: You have sung Malik and Reshammiya's version of the title song of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'. Which do you prefer?

A: I really like both of them. These composers are such big names and I am glad I got to work with them at the very start of my career.

Anu Malik cancels contract with T-Series
Subhash K Jha | Friday, 07 April , 2006, 12:59
With Himesh Reshammiya riding the charts and walking away with all the awards this year, the conflict with the other chart-masala maker Anu Malik was just around the corner. But the fall-out has been quicker than one thought. With T Series getting together with Himesh and Bhooshan Kumar's sister Tulsi Kumar for an added song in the Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif romance Humko Deewana Kar Gaye Anu is no mood to remain silent.

"I've had issues earlier with people like David Dhawan and Mukesh Bhatt for bringing other composers into the picture. I was given to understand that the whole score in Humko Deewana ….is mine. In fact I never do soundtracks where I've to share sound-space with others. How was I to know that a song will be added after the release of the album?"

Anu admits that Himesh's number came as a shock to him. "I had no idea this was coming. I've now decided to get a written contract with every producer than no other composer would be brought in at the last minute. I've spoken to Harry Baweja about it. I told him I'll do his son's Love Story 2050 only if I've it in writing that I'll be the only music composer. Harry is a sweet man. He understood what I've gone through."

Anu is clearly smarting under the blow. "It's very clear that T Series is promoting one music director. I wish them all the best. I'm happy with my daal-chawal. I don't want biryani. I'm not looking for a career as a singer. In fact after this incident I went to Bhooshan Kumar who's like a kid to me, and politely told him to cancel my contract with T Series."

The music director had recently signed a 3-year contract with T Series as composer and singer for non-film albums. "As I said I'd rather focus on my composing career right now. So this incident(with T Series) has been a blessing in disguise. It helped me to get my priorities right. I don't want to do private albums. Not when J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan is around the corner. At this juncture I'm looking to compose for the likes of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra. I wouldn't have been able to do that if I was focusing on my private albums."

Himesh Reshammiya Replies :"I've the highest regard for Anuji. He's my senior and I've been deeply impressed by his track record. I've no interest in muscling my way into anybody else's domain, least of all Anuji's. I agreed to do the song for the promotional video of Humko Deewana Kar Gaye only after T Series showed me the NOC (no objection certificate) from Anu-ji. If he had any objection to my promotional song, then why did he gave them an NOC?"

Adds Bhooshan Kumar of T-Series: "We see absolutely no reason for Anuji to be upset with Himesh doing the promotional song in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye . Does he say he had no choice but to give the NOC? I don't know what he means by that. There was no pressure on him to give the NOC. We're going to put out a new edition of the Humko…. soundtrack with Himesh's song in it.

Why Himesh didn't attend the Filmfare Awards
By Subhash K Jha | Wednesday, 15 March , 2006, 13:30
Himesh Reshammiya, the first music director to win the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer tells Subhash K Jha why he couldn't attend: You've made history!
Yes, it's quite something. Unfortunately I couldn't attend because I had a prior commitment out of Mumbai. Also to be honest, at an earlier popular awards I was neither nominated for my music nor singing in Aashiq Banaya Aapne. I felt baffled. Aisa kyon kiya unhone? Filmfare revived my hopes. And I was all set to catch a flight back to Mumbai. But got delayed and reached at 11.30 p.m. My dad did go to the awards. But twenty minutes late.
For the first time a music director won the best playback singer award.
It doesn't mean that I see myself as a threat to the playback singers who were nominated alongside me. I do feel sorry that I didn't win the best music director's award. The award for the best playback singer is special because it's the first song that I recorded for a film. I don't think anyone else got an award for his first recorded song.
People ridiculed you for being nasal.
That's over. After the stupendous sales of Aap Ka Suroor where I've explored my entire range, that has stopped. Now those who still call me nasal are just talking for talking's sake. I've sung seven super-hit songs, the latest being Jhoom in Tom Dick & Harry which I predict, will be the biggest chartbuster of them all. I insist, I am not a professional playback singer. I'm a music director first. If I sing one out of my six compositions, what's the problem?

Would you sing for other composers?
Only if A.R Rahman asks me. No one else. He's the No. 1. And he did say in an interview that Aashiq banaya aapne is his favourite track of the year

Himesh ecstatic about 36 CHINA TOWN
By Sameer Wadekar, Bollywood Trade News Network

View 36 CHINA TOWN Music Release Picture GallerySome people mock his nasal crooning and some people go to the extent of saying that he is not a capable singer. Leave aside those accusations one fact is clear that Himesh Reshammiya is the country's sensation at the moment. His nasal twang has imposed a certain identity to him and the young crowd has gone bonkers to his music. This talented guy has composed such chartbusters as 'Aashiq Banaya Apne' and 'Jhalak Dikhla Ja' and was a hot favorite at the award ceremonies this year, sweeping numerous medals for his proficiency.

Subhash Ghai's 36 CHINA TOWN is his latest credit and the music of the film is already making waves. At the music launch of 36 CHINA TOWN, Subhash Ghai seemed pretty elated about Himesh, "When I decided to sign Himesh for the film he was quite ecstatic. He claimed that he'll compose a score people won't forget for a long time. I was quite taken aback because he didn't hear the story or read the script; to maine socha ki ye aise kaise bol sakta hai! (I thought how he could say something like this) But now I can say that Himesh has lived up to his promise. He's done a magnificent job here."

View 36 CHINA TOWN Music Release Picture GalleryHimesh was humble in his stride. "I am proud to be associated with Mukta Arts. I thank Subhash Ghai for having given me the chance to work for this film. I now need your blessings and so do my colleagues here. I had a good time working with Sameer-ji (lyricist)." He the turned towards the Tauranis (of Tips) and jokingly said, "Ab hum logon ka career inke haath mein hai (now our careers depend on them!). They are the best I'll tell you." The music of the film is released by Tips.

In keeping with the spirit the evening concluded musically. Alka Yagnik and Himesh Reshammiya enthralled the masses with their superb vocal rendition. This was followed with model turned actor Upen Patel matching steps to 'Aashiqui Mein Teri' which left the crowd wanting for more.
