'Papa' By : Nalini Mukesh Mathur
The name 'Mukesh' to most people conjures up the image of a great singer; a greater human being. But to me it means- " Papa ". When I was asked to write about him, a millions incidents rushed to my minds. I can write a book on him. I thought. When I actually sat down to put my experiences and memories on paper, I failed .

It is always difficult to write about someone you have loved ; adored ; in the past tense, when that someone is also a renowned name, on whom thousands of words have already been written the going gets more difficult. Either the write up is too personal and reeking sentimentality or cold and superficial.

So after days to trying to write on him and failing miserably, I picked these pictures from the family albums and decided to write around them.
( This photograph (1946) was taken immediately after their wedding , which took place in a temple in a Kandiwali , at the residence of Mr. R.D. Mathur.)
Let see ! His marriage. He from a middle class family of the kayastha community. She a loved daughter of millionaire Gujarati Brahmins. Hardly a suitable match ! Especially with him having him no proper house, an erratic in-come and a " immoral " profession ! So thought her family. Thus Mukesh and Sarla eloped.

Everyone made dire predictions of unhappy days and divorce; but both weathered the' lean days and celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary on the 22nd July,1976 five days before his departure for the U.S.A. on 27th July,1976.

( This photograph (1952) was taken when she came from Delhi to visit him. Mukesh flanked by his wife Sarla and mother Chand Rani. On his lap are the first two of his five children ,daughter Rita and son Nitin.)
Mukesh earliest memories were of his mother. He worshiped her. She was always there as a great inspiration to him and even after she died in 1960,in the greatest as well as gravest moments of his life, he thought of her ; called out to her. Amongst his last thoughts and words was his " BAUAA "
( That's him looks like an actor, doesn't he ? )
Mukesh came to Bombay in 1940 not to be a playback singer but to be an actor. His acting career was utter flop, but in the process he became an extremely successful singer. Then again in the early fifties he got the " actingbug ".This time he produce a film 'Anurag' starring Usha Kiran, Mridulla, and himself. The film ran into financial difficulties and was never released. Yet the songs of the film, which he composed himself. are evergreen and sung till to-day.
( In this memorable picture taken at the recording of Jis Desh Mein Ganga Bahti Hai , " Hum Bhi Hain Tum Bhin Ho" seated from left to right are singers Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and Mukesh. Standing from left to right are Shankar, Raj Kapoor, Recordist Minoo Kartak and Jaikishan. )
His association with Raj Kapoor started in 1946. In on interview on television in Mauritius, Mukesh laughingly called it " Love at first sight !" They shared a unique bond which cannot describe very well on paper. The world know them as ' Body and the soul '. His genial temperament won him the respect and love of all his colleagues.

Papa was known to be on unassuming and humble man. The following incident proves it. He often went abroad to perform and on one such trip Nitin and I both accompanied him to Mauritius . As we deplaned at the airport, a massive crowd broke into cheers and television camera whirred. Nitin turned to him asked, " Papa why are there so many people ? " The very innocent reply was , " I don't know but must be some minister or dignitary arriving ! " Well, they were there to receive him !

( This picture was taken at the town hall show in Mauritius where a hundred thousand people collected to see him sing. " Aawara Hoon " he sang and the entire sea of people danced to his singing. Left to right Nitin ,Nalini and Mukesh,)
( Mukesh (1976) speaking on the phone with Anand Bakshi )
A few days before his departure for the U.S.A. my parents celebrated their 'Pearl Anniversary' - thirty years of married life. We had a small get together with close friends and colleagues. A day before that, he had heard his song for ' Satyam Shivam Sudaram ' for the first time, Now that is one song which grows on you. It's not one that hits you the first time you hear it. But he loved instantly. At the party he received a phone call from Anand Bakshi who called to apologies for not coming." BakshiSab, " he said ,' Aapko sau khoon maaf,' you have written a master piece ! Its going to be a song which people will remember for generations to come.
How prophetic those words were ! It was the last song he ever recorded.

Mukesh

Mukesh Chand Mathur (formal name Zoravar Chand), (July 22, 1923, Delhi, India - August 27, 1976), popularly known as Mukesh, referred to as the man with the golden voice, was one of the finest Indian playback singers along with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

Mukesh's voice was noticed by Motilal (a popular actor in Hindi films, also a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister's wedding. Motilal took him to Bombay, let him stay with him and even arranged for singing lessons for him. During this period, Mukesh managed to bag a role in a Hindi film, Nirdosh (Innocent) (1941). He got his break as a playback singer in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar (First Look). The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne De (If the heart burns, let it burn) , which was incidentally picturised on Motilal.

He is best known for the songs he sang as a playback singer for Raj Kapoor, a legendary actor/director of Bollywood in 1950s and 1960s.

In 1974, Mukesh received a National Award for the song Kain baar yoon bhi dekhaa hai from Rajnigandha (1974), and Filmfare Awards for the songs Sab Kuch Seekha in the movie Anari (1959), Ganga Ram Ki Samajh in Pehchaan (1970), Jai Bolo in Be Imaan (1972) and Kabhie Kabhie in the film of the same name (1976).

He died of a heart attack on August 27, 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, USA where he had gone for a concert. His body was carried back to India with Lata Mangeshkar, where a grand funeral ceremony took place as many famous actors, personalities of the Indian film industry, and fans paid tribute to the late singer. When the news of his death reached Raj Kapoor, he remarked that he had lost his soul, which is a testimony to the timeless and unforgettable association of Mukesh's voice (in playback) to the immensely popular songs of Raj Kapoor's films.

After Mukesh's death, his newer unreleased songs came out in 1977 with films like Dharam Veer, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khel Khilari Ka, Darinda, and Chandi Sona. The year 1978 also featured a good number of Mukesh songs , films like Aahuti, Paramatma, Tumhari Kasam, and Satyam Shivam Sundaram, where Mukesh sang his last film song "Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal." From 1980 onward, Mukesh's voice was heard in many late films like Shaitan Mujarim, Premika, Patthar Se Takkar (1980), Sanjh Ki Bela, Maila Anchal (1981), Aarohi (1982), Chor Mandali (1983), Nirlaj (1985), Love and God (1986), Shubh Chintak (1989), and his last known release of Chand Grahan (1997).

Mukesh's son, Nitin Mukesh, was a fairly popular singer in the 1980s and sings mostly devotional religious songs these days.
