Hi Swastika,

Very nice posting… actually, a nice change of pace!!! I see some wonderful song lists…

Great selections… I agree about "Ma tujhe salaam"… Let me add some of my choices…

O Sanam - Lucky Ali
Kate Nahin Raat Mori
Aur Aahista – Pankaj Udhas
Maine payal - Falguni Pathak

Gunghroo toot gaye
Khuda ne dil banakar – Pankaj Udhas
Woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani – Jagjit & Chitra
Kal chaudavin ki raat thi – Jagjit Singh
Koi nahin hai phir bhi, awaaz aa rahi hai – Talat Aziz ( I love the picturization of this song – not often we see Kerala culture merged with Hindi ghazals).

I may add some more later… no time right now

Thanks for a great topic!!!

Thanks😊 for your appreciation.

I have heard just the first four of your list...nice selection. Don't you like Fuzon?

Like most of ustad sultan khan's - piya basanti, kate nahi raat and other rajasthani songs (though dont understand the language). his sarangi gives me goosebumps every time.

Like almost all of Shobha Mudgal's. Actually, cant recollect which one I dont.

Once liked Lucky Ali's Sunoh, but after a live concert my love for his song went 'dhoom pichak', completely smashed.

Oh yes, liked Shaan's too.

I doubt there's any instrument to match the emotional vitality and expressiveness of the sarangi. Nothing to say about its unique ability to play almost any gamak, any taan, any murki. The Sarangi's sound is mesmerising.

so true. what a voice ust khan has. his sarangi does magic. everytime i hear him, i get completely lost in another world. and later i feel homesick too :-((, dont know why though. I cannot judge technically, but what I feel is pure magic.

i think violin can come close to it in emoting (to some extent).

Sometimes i feel sad about the knowledge that many instruments and also folk songs are gradually dissapearing from the mainstream in India. I like folk songs like baul, bhatiyali, rajasthani and many more :-(

that just reminded me of my childhood days :-))) heehee
there was a time, while watching movies (on tv), not understanding the dialogues and only by hearing the background shriek of the instrument (not knowing that it was violin then), I used to feel 'ok, this is the time to cry'!!!! And remember use of 'ghatam' for commedy. I have later acquired the taste of violin through concerts and CDs (mostly western).

I feel that Tabla makes indian music 'complete'. Love it. Love Zakir Hussain, Ust. Allahrakha, shafad ahmed khan, Nikhil (Ghosh) and many more (there is one sardar'ji too. cant remember his name). Actually, both my father and my brother play tabla. In his younger days, my father was blessed with training under ust. Keramatullah Khan for a couple of years. I was kind of born to the sound of it. think that is why i feel anything without tabla is 'incomplete'.

I like some of Shaan's numbers like "Bhool Ja..", his remix of Dil Kya Kare
Among Ghazals, I like Mehdi hasan's Gulon mein rang bhare, Ghulam Ali's dil mein ek laher si uthi hai abhi...
Nice thread, Swastika!!

The last 4 in the list are all ghazals… I remembered them because you mentioned Pankaj Udhas's "Aur Aahista kijiye baatein…" I like a lot of his songs.

I have a feeling you must have seen the music video of "Koi nahin hai phir bhi"… it was impossible to miss it, they played it so often a few years ago. It's a very haunting song…

I don't know if I've heard Fuzon… Is there any song that you recommend? I'll check it out on Raaga.com

What was in that video?

Songs that I recommend from Fuzon :
*Mora saiyyan - Khamaj
*Aankhon ke saagar
*Tera bina

Fuzon is a Pakistani band. I think you have seen the 'Mora saiyyan" video. It is inspired from "Kaagaz ke phool". The video is black and white and is about a director who discovers an actress.
