agree with you.

at the risk of repeating myself (well the shloka is not my creation, but i had quoted it here before):

dadhi madhuram, madhu madhuram, draksHaa maduraa, sudhaapi madhuraiva

tattadeva hi madhuram yatra mano hi sanlagnam

(some people fine) curds sweet, (some others find) honey sweet, greapes are sweet and amRt is sweet too.

all those things are sweet that are dear to our mind.

the point is, it's hard to say what people would like and what they won't. as raghav pointed out, you may appreciate it more as you love the instrumental part of it as well. as for myself, i appreciate vocal more.

Great article. Always the ultimate in music - R D Burman
The more you get to know the composer, the more regard he evokes - personally and professionally.

I should let you know everybody that R.D.Barman and Sachin Dev Barman are from Tripura, a sister state of north east.
I think as debojit, the Barman's are also a part of India and one should teach both himesh and adesh about these and geographical equation of India.

And if it is true, SD comes down in my estimate. It was wrong of him to take the credit for songs that his son composed. How could he do that? I am sure this would have caused RD some heartburn.

There are at least a few songs that apparently RDBurman composed and SDBurman used. But that should not belittle SDBurman's stature as a great MD. Look at the vast number of beautiful songs he composed himself. What's a handful number of songs he took from his son in comparison with that?

there is no use teaching them anything -- geography or history.

That's what I am trying to say. They were not just a handful of songs. I had read an interview of Varsha Bhonsle some years back and she listed the songs of SD that were actually composed by RD. The list included almost all of my favourite SD songs! I was quite shocked to learn that these had been made by RD, but go in the name of SD. Not fair to RD at all!

RD learnt a lot under his legendry father.
And these songs are guru-dakshina to his father-guru.
There are not many songs of RD which came in name of SD accor to biography written on Pancahm by Narolkar( you can refer to www.panchamonline.com.|

Some such songs which leap to my memory are:
ae meri topi ( funtoosh)
most of Aradhana songs ( only orchestration)
Abhimaan ( only orchestration, notes written by Sachin da).
Please feel free to shoot Qs on Pancham I shall try to answer.

Well I know that "sar jo tera chakraaye" in Pyaasa was made by RD. Little RD was assisting his father right from his childhood and contributed heavily to his father's success. Songs of "Chalti ka naam gaadi" are also said to have been made by RD. Then "Kaagaz ke phool". If you hear "Jewel Thief", the mark of RD is unmistakable.
