I remember Aaayega Aane wala and raina Beeti jaye were there. Does anyone know the list by any chance? It was in a Filmfare or stardust interview...

Couldn't find that particular interview but check out this website:

http://gaurav-kumar.tripod.com/lata.htm

It has a list of 35 of her favourite songs with comments from Lata ji herself. It is too long to post here but I can do that if people prefer.

That Lata sang the maximum duets with Rafi was NEWS to me (despite staying away from him for so many years). And even more astonishing was that the maximum number of duets she sang with a lady was none other than her sister Asha herself. Where are all those 74 duets? I think I have heard just a few.

One of the finest albums I have ever heard of Lata's is the one consisting of Meera bhajans sung by her and composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. God knows if the songs are available now. Her voice is crystal clear and FLAWLESS. She sounds like Meera herself. It used to be available in LP records. If I could only lay my hands on these songs!

What are three octaves? Any example?

I think Lata has sung in three octaves in the song "Manamohana badey jhootey" in Seema. It is a PHENOMENAL song, a composition without comparison. Let anyone else sing it, and it will sound insipid. It's based on Raag Jayjaywanti. I am sure there are many other songs where Lata has demonstrated her ability to sing in 3 octaves.

Oh yes, all we have to do is to listen to Salil Choudhury's compositions for Lata and we will get the 3 octaves. He believed in stretching her voice to its limit. Listen to "na jeeya laage na" from Anand. Sounds like there are more than 3 octaves!!

Lata herself said "Salida mujhse bahut mushkil mushkil gaane gawaate the". Wow if it was difficult for her, what would it be for lesser mortals?

Lata Mangeshkar once said that the only actress who did justice to her songs was NUTAN. Notice how other actresses merely lip-synch and their throats don't move at all, even great actresses like Waheeda!

Watch Nutan in Seema singing "Manamohana badey jhootey" and you will see her straining her throat. In fact, she would really sing along.

Wonder why these little details are not taken care of by film directors. Watch Hema Malini singing the highest-pitched of songs without the merest hint of effort on her face.

Lataji also said that the actress to whom her voice suited to the T was Saira Bano. I agree. Listen to Unse Mili Nazar...or Woh Hain Zara Khafa Khafa

Shall see them again and decide.

I would like to add a trivia:

In the beginning of her career, dilip kumar had once commented that she sings very well but her singing smells of daal bhaat(...dal bhaat ki boo aati hai) she started taking urdu lessons to perfect her diction.
