With Public voting in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and early elimination of many deserving contestants, I have been wondering why some people vote for a particular contestant, while others vote for other contestants.... is there a logic behind voting other than general liking for someone? If yes, what factors play in?

Here's my analysis. Please feel free to add to it or correct me.

These are the categories of voters I have identified, their characteristics, and why a contestant appeals to them:

(1) "Communists" - community supporters
What appeals to them - same religion / same language / same region / same cast of the contestant
Their characteristics : They rarely change loyalty. They'll continue supporting folks of their community caring little for talent and personality of the contestant. They take pride in their community.
General Agegroup of such voters : mid age and seniors, family folks

(2) "Hearts on the sleeve voters" - smitten by charms of the opposite sex / same sex
What appeals to them - contestant's good looks / sexiness / smile / height / figure / built / clothing etc
Their characteristics: They change loyalty as easily as they form one! Their "object of affection" changes when a new contestant comes in rrge picture with a better package to offer than the previous contestant. Their "love" is intense, but short lived. They rarely judge by musical talent.
General age group of such voters : school goers / teens / singles

(3) "Personality worshippers"
What appeals to them - contestant's looks to a certain extent, but mostly Humor / Smartness / Style / Spoken skills / sweet talk / confidence / charm / brains in the contestant.
Characteristics: They look out for charming personality who can keep them interested in the show. Humor is a must. Musical talent in the contestant would be welcome, but is not mandatory.
General Age group of such voters : college goers / young folks

(4) "Music to my ears" voters - they watch the show primarily for the musical element.
What appeals to them - singing ability / variation / range / voice quality / playback ability of the contestant.
Their characteristics: These folks are the most genuine music lovers, but their choice of contestants usually loses, because you don't find too many genuine music lovers. They are frustrated by the fan following and lime light that lesser qualified singers get. They vote solely on music talent, and do not get carried away by personality attributes they like/dislike in a contestant.
General Agegroup of such voters : All ages

(5) "Fun lovers"
What appeals to them - They watch a show not because they care much for nitty-gritties of music, but because they are looking for entertainment, which music never fails to provide. They don't bother much about singing ability or variation a singer brings in, but get carried away by the choice of songs of the contestant. Fast, happy, new world music or old world familiar songs are music to their ears, but unheard-of songs, classical songs and ghazals go unnoticed. They vote for the one who sings the songs they enjoyed on a given day.
General Agegroup of such voters : Mid age mostly

I'm a type 4 voter through and through. What kind of a voter are you?

I think I come under category 4, "Music to my ears" voters

Even though I am a vineet Fan, when I watch SRGMP I watch primarily for the musical element.

I hv even voted Himani, Debu , Nihira n Hemu thru Internet when they sang well.. apperciated them in this Forum too..

Singers comes n Go it is Music that lives long...

I think i don't fall under any one category. It's the combination of 3 & 4.

Thanks all!
That's an excellent point arkaghos. I was afraid of stretching my point too long, else I was going to add another paragraph on things that upset a voter enough to not vote someone deserving a vote based on pure singing talent.
Just as you mentioned, the contestant coming across as arrogant, or manipulative, tends to not win votes. The same way, mention of parent's dreams and how heartbreaking it would be for them if he/she loses also upsets people who feel there's nothing new about it as all parents are very attached to their children and affected by their success/failure.
And that's also the tricky part or risk factor of public voting. It is not feasible to find out who voted for whom and why. Since the public cannot be made accountable for their actions, the way judges in a show can be, they get away with their voting decision, however unwise it may be.
