He became an overnight star since he took part in Zee TV's musical show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - Challenge 2005.
But Hemachandra's journey, since his birth, has been musical. He started to hum when he first discovered sound and his nose-dived into learning music while he was just five. He says, "My mother, Sasikala Swamy, who is a professional singer, is my guru. My training in Carnatic vocal started when I was five years old and since then I have been singing in concerts too."
He has performed in more than 100 concerts and is looking forward to more. "Music is a continuous learning process, and I would like to sing for concerts throughout my career." But then he also wants to earn name as a singer in the film industry. "I have already sung for two films, a Telugu movie titled Vamsam and another Bollywood movie, Alag, which is to be released soon."
He is trying to have an all-India appeal by getting a solid foundation in Hindustani music too. "It's a year now, that I started training myself for Hindustani music, which is also necessary if one needs to establish as a singer in Hindi films."
Is there any idol whom he cherishes and would like to emulate? "I worship S P Balasubrmaniam. There are a few singers of his range and calibre. I'd love to become like him. I have worked with him in Vamsam, and when he blessed me it boosted my confidence all the more."
This 17-year-old is very well knows about the kind of dedication that one needs to put in to reach the top, "I used to practice for more than eight hours a day so as to strengthen my foundation in classical music. But now I am unable to devote so much time for practice, though I'd love to."
He has a long cherished dream of contributing to music, apart from being a well-known singer. "My parents have shown me the way and given all the support required to hold my foot in the music industry. I want to set up a music school when I become financially independent."
Is there a word of caution for other upcoming artists? "Hard work and through dedication is the first step," he says
