Hi all,
First of all I must apologize for my lengthy posts. It's just that I sometimes get so excited about the show! I am typing this without first reading the new posts on the forum, so I apologize if this has been said already. I'm kind of pressed for time, so I thought I'd post first and read later.
I just saw the Diya/Kunal epidsode tonight and I must say...I really enjoyed this show a lot. For a long time it felt as though the magic was gone from SRGMP, but tonight's show was really entertaining. I started off by laughing at the contestant's somewhat wooden performances to "Neal 'n Nikki" in the opening of the show. I really wish the show would just let them all sing live and not include the silly dancing. Also, I've noticed that when a contestant leaves, in the next show Shaan makes a a comment about them and a little clip is shown. I was disappointed to not hear Shaan mention Rajiv (perhaps it was edited out), however, the clip with all the contestants with the special-needs kids was nice and touching and Rajiv was in that too. I know many of you here are glad he's gone, but I still think of him as part of the SRGMP team. I think Diya and Kunal were good guests. They had something different to say about each singer and it seemed like they were really listening and feeling the performances. They used words like "soul" "atma" "jazbat" "touched"...and if you watched their expressions and body language during the performances, you could tell they were really into it (especially Kunal, given he's a singer and former SRGMP champ). This was refreshing especially after Shahid and Amrita were like, "I'm running out of things to say about the performers!". Now my take on the singers:
Twinkle: I was expecting her to rock the "Dhoom" song, but she seemed to lose steam. I agreed with HR's comment that the tag line of the song should've been sung with gusto. I also think it was a mistake for her to sing both the hindi and English versions of the song. Thodi si khichdi si pak rahi thi.
Debojit: I thought he sang pretty well and was surprised that he got such low marks. Perhaps I missed something askew that our trusty mentors picked up on.
Nihira: Excellent as usual. I loved how AS pointed out that she sang the overlapping vocals of the song the way Ashaji did in th recorded version and then gave her an extra point for pulling it off in a live performance.
Hemachandra: My God he was awesome!!! I loved his performance. He absolutely blew me away! I thought Diya was going to cry. Kunal looked entranced and mesmerized. Hema was brilliant...perfect! If he is getting a yellow in the next episode that is absolutely insane! After this performance he should've just been handed the first prize and declared the winner! Clearly the best of tonight's show, in my opinion.
Himani: I thought she sang beautifully! She excellently pulled off a song that Lataji sang in high notes. The mentors wasted no time in giving her 10's which says volumes about her performance.
Paresh: I am looking for a positive thing to say about his performance and what I've found to say is kuddos to him for trying a song that is fast paced and partly in Punjabi. This is not an easy task for someone who's mother tongue is Gujarati and who started off this contest not speaking Hindi. I do think his performance was not up tp par and he should've chosen a different song because the one he chose is a remix style with a lot going in in the background and singing it live is tough, but I don't think he deserved a 5! He should've gotten two 6's or a 6 and 7. Also, I think now that Rajiv is gone, Paresh is going to be the new "fall guy", meaning the guy that gets the 6's and 7's and starts to meander a bit from his consistency. I think Debojit is in that category too, but I think with Debo, he is capable of bouncing back a little bit better. Plus he has always been among the toppers in the voting. I think Paresh is slowly entering the danger zone.
Ujjaini: I thought she sang the Aitraaz song very well, but not as well as Himani sang it the day she fainted. Ujjaini probably prepped for the song a lot...Himani was sick the day she sang it and according to HR, had only 15 minutes to learn it, but Himani's version was much better than Ujjaini's. Still I think Ujjaini did well and I think after getting a yellow last time she was just a big bundle of nerves and that's why her start-off was shaky. But once she got into it she was fine.
Vinit: As much as I enjoyed his singing, I still have trouble picturing his voice on today's heroes, even the younger ones. No doubt Vinit is an excellent, accomplished singer, but he needs to let his voice mature just a little bit and then he's set! I think Hema sings much better than him (sorry Vinit fans, I know you love your little rock star!) I liked the song he chose and the way he sang it.
Now for some extraneous comments:
The whole "Vinit and his mehbooba" thing: As funny as it was, I feel HR was a little bit out of line for bringing up the fact that Vinit has a crush on someone. Whether it's Himani or Twinkle or someone else, he should've been more discreet even if he does know about Vinit's personal life. Then ID jumped on the bandwagon and made comments too. I like how AS tried to save the embarassment and get the focus off of Vinit by saying Vinit loves Diya and she's his favorite actress. Anyway, now that the number of contestants is decreasing and there is more time to fill on the show, I think Zee is airing moments like these to entice the audience and play up the popularity of the show. Ah well...anything to make a buck, eh?
I liked the end when all the contestants were on stage singing "Kajra Mohabat Wala" and Diya was dancing. I think that in the start of the shows, instead of having them sing pre-recorded stuff, they should just have them all sing live like they did at the close of this show.
Finally (are you guys still with me or have I bored you?) I'm saving my most important comment for last, regarding Nihira and Himani. Nihira sang a peppy Ashaji number while Himani sang a more mellow Lataji number. Both sang superbly. There has been much discussion/argument on this forum about how Nihira has a range to sing anything and Himani can only sing certain types of songs but never the Lataji/Alkaji type songs. I think today both girls proved that they can sing in different ranges and styles. Usually we would expect Himani to sing a song like "Rangeela Re" and Nihira to sing a song like "Uppar Khuda", but what a treat to hear this reversed and to hear them sing songs a bit out of their genre (for lack of a better word)! No matter who wins the contest, both of these girls have very bright futures ahead of them and the blessings of their families, friends, gurus, mentors, and the thousands of fans whose hearts they have touched. Bas. I'm done and I will eat my dinner and then read all your posts.
