Thought I'd put my two cents in with regards to the show i watched last night...the one based on Shahid K and Amrita R's songs. If I were distributing awards that night...here's what they'd look like:

1. Award for the PERFORMANCE OF THE EPISODE:
DEBOJIT singing "Aaje ve maahi lets do..." from Fida

No doubts there. Have never bought into Debu as a performer, but yesterday, he completely out-performed everyone.Easily switched between the spoken part and the singing part. His accent was perfect, his communication with his audience was perfect. Dancing not so perfect, but you cant have it all!

2. Award for the SINGER OF THE EPISODE:
HEMCHANDRA singing "Ishq Vishq pyaar vyaar"

Beautifully sung, pitch perfect voice modulation, sang it with so much emotion. Its not easy to switch between singing full throated and then immediately moving to a low, soft tone. He did it so beautifully that it brought goosebumps to my flesh. To me, his performance last night was a perfect ten.

3. Award for BETTER THAN ORIGINAL SINGER:
HIMANI singing "Chale Jaise Hawayein..." It is NOT a difficult song to sing, and is actually quite flat with few variations. It requires a singer with a rich, open voice (unlike Vasundhara Das, the original singer)...Himani demonstrated that beautifully.

4. Award for DANCER OF THE EPISODE:
TWINKLE performing to "Chot Dil pe lagi...." I do like Twinkle's voice, but she proved without doubt yesterday that she needs to work desperately on her range and voice modulation. She sang the high part well enough, but went completely flat in the lower register. Her "cute" dance moves directed at Shahid K were the only memorable thing about her performance!

5. Award for MOST STRESSED PERFORMER (S)-
TIE between NIHIRA and VINEET. Nihira sang a soft, romantic number...sang her song well enough, but looked really uptight while doing it. As a result, fell short on the emotional quotient.

Vineet sang "Gustaakh Dil" Thought that song was perfect for him..originally sung by Sonu Nigam, composed by HR, a fun song. Vineet should have nailed the song.Instead, he rushed through the song and looked really awkward while performing. Watch out HR...your excessive attention is getting to your Shagird!

6. Award for MOST THANDA PERFORMANCE:

Again TIE between RAJEEV AND PARESH. Paresh sang "Kubakoo...", an ordinary song made special by Shaan's singing and Shahid's dancing...Paresh doesn't sing like Shaan and certainly doesn't dance like Shaahid!

Rajeev took a catchy song like "Nazar nazar" and made it completely ordinary. The refrain in the song, "Nazar, nazar..dhoonde usse..." that is the best part of the song...have to modulate your voice, emphasize the words "Nazar, nazar"...Rajeev sang the whole song in a dull, spaced out voice.

7. Award for OK BUT NOT GREAT PERFORMANCE:
UJJAINI singing "Saiyyan ji...". It was a cute performance, but no great shakes.

8. Award for MOST ANNOYING PERSON OF THE SHOW:
Wait a minute..i've run out of contestants...thats right..this award goes to AMRITA RAO! Isn't there a saying to the tune of..if you dont have anything clever to say, keep your mouth shut....well, she's never heard of that phrase apparently. Her comment "I liked your song best when you stopped and pointed at me" was the height of vanity and silliness!

9. Award for MOST SENSIBLE PERSON ON THE SHOW-
SHAAHID KAPUR....didn't say much...focussed on promoting his movie, which is what they were there for...if only he had given Amrita some pointers before the show!

Thats it. End of long rant!

Very well put musicbuff!
Amrita Rao should have toned down her comments a litle bit. Her initial comments to Shaan was cute but from then on it went downhill.
Shahid on the other hand was very down to earth.
I liked Hema's performance very much, I am still humming the song, and Debojit was just awesome.

Both Debo & Hema have very good control over modulation & high & low notes, we have seen that earlier as well, though the song they chose has not much to offer.
Twinkle really needs to work on her tone:
but let me ask you how can one improve tone, this is quite inborn isn't it, there is lengthy article that tone is predominantly under control of hormones. Anyway...............
Twinkle needs to work at low notes as well, she starts stressing at low notes, we saw that earlier in Made in India.
I've a strong feeling that both Nihira & Vinit are feeling very stressed, their mentors need to check this out.
Paresh in anyway is the weakest link now.....

Thanks whocares! Exactly right about Amrita R...sunk as low as she could go towards the end! The song Hemachandra sang never registered with me before i heard him sing it on the show. As Shaan put it, Hema completely made the song his own and sung it really well.

Wonderful response Niraj! with regards to Twinkle, one can improve upon the "range"...not so much the tone. I actually like the slightly husky, raspy tone she has. What I dont like is her going flat on the low notes and not paying enough attention to voice modulation.

To improve her lower register, she could do more"kharaj" ka riyaaz. She has apparently learnt music...her guruji must have told her to do so. The song that she sang actually doesn't have that much of a range, so it shouldn't have been difficult at all....sheer laziness and reluctance to practise is the only thing that could influence a singer to go flat. As for voice modulation, again, if it doesn't come naturally (like for Hemchandra & himani), classical music training should take of that for Twinkle. The impression I get is that she just doesn't work hard enough.

Hi jmn7,
She definitely was careless. Its not the expression which i think was the problem, Twinkle is one of the more expressive singers in the show. How shall i explain it...ok, the lines of the song "woh ajnabee mere dil ko, bhala bhala sa laaga" ...everytime she said those lines, her voice went flat...you could make out she was struggling to sing that low. Thats what i meant.

musicbuff very good views.
I thought Nihira was restraint too. In girls, Ujjaini was worst after Amrita 😳 yesterday.
She was talking way too much. She made even poor Shaan blush with her remarks.

Hi aab and newyorker.
I didn't much like ujjaini's performance, but didn't think it was bad either. Guess it boils down to individual preference and Ujjaini's song just didn't do it for me!
