In other words do you agree that "Ancient India can be compared to a Nightangle who has forgotten to sing the Song of Joy"?

Good one.. 😆

I feel the reason you feel even joyous songs were sad in those times is because, it touched your heart. Anything that touches your heart brings tears. Even happiness. 😃 Thats what is meant by "feel" of a song. I miss that "feel" in lyrics of 90s or 2K. The degradation started in the 80s for sure.

Get a life. Jo bolna hai fatafat saaf saaf bol. Ghuma phira ke kai ko bolna. So instead of phools smooching we see fools smooching. 😆

IMHO , we do have great singers now, but have Lyricist who have very poor thoughts or taste or just try to make ends meet by pleasing the producers 😕

This is more likely😳

I don't think they have poor thoughts😊They are forced to pen lousy lyrics. To cater to the general
public.

Thank god, we still have discerning listeners, like us😆* pat our own backs*

😆

I can imagine the conversation between the producer and the lyricist/MD gang...
"bhaiiyaa, humko tottal mein paanch gaana chahiye phataphat. Do happy, do sad, aur ek item number Rakhi Sawant ke liye. Fir usmein se do chaar ke remix kara do.
Original nahin to remix chal jaayegi ! "

Eggsactly.😊

You have a good right brain 👏

So do i😳

could exactly visualise the scene out there, the producer chewing paan and telling the lyricist, with a disdainful look as if he is a cockroach crawled into the room by mistake😆

The lyricist thinking, kahan phas gaye re, kya karen, paapi pet ka sawal😭

Will reply later to most other posts. But for now, I disagree. I think if you listen to Javed Akhtar's songs, they are really brilliant. Maula Maula, Sapnon se bhare naina , Yeh jo desh hai tera and many many other songs have great lyrics.

Just because the form of expression has changed doesn't automatically imply a degeneration. Beautiful poetry can be written in Hinglish also.

Agreed there.

But still IMHO an old flop can stand on its own in front of a new hit. 😳

Of course, it is your opinion and I respect it but I am not sure this is always the case. At best, I would say, on an average if you take a collection of bad lyrics in old and new songs, the bad ones in the new times will be worse. But in terms of the average and good lyric songs, I think the standard is pretty similar.

Take the theme of romance for example which plays a pivitol role in our hindi film music. Uss zamane mein we would see two phools smooching when the scene got really romantic. The scene behind the scene was left to our imagination. Chandi raatein and pyar ki baatein were subltle.

The lyrics combined with our imagination weaved magic in a song. And the charm of romance was intact in the lyrics and in the way our imagination processed the lyrics. It was simple and spun around that simple feeling called love.

Otherwise there was nothing worthwhile in the song picturization itself. Kuch bhi khaas nahin. Khaali peeli black and white tha. With monotonous facial expressions and weird body movements. The visual impact of a song was insignificant.

I enjoy the romantic lyrics of the old songs as well. But having said that, I don't see flowery, indirect, romantic lyrics as the be all and end all of creative poetry. They are fantastic in their own right but there are many ways of expression.

Today we live in times where there is no time for romance. Get a life. Jo bolna hai fatafat saaf saaf bol. Ghuma phira ke kai ko bolna. So instead of phools smooching we see fools smooching. 😆

So where is the element of imagination here? Old songs of 60s and even 70s carried the chhaap of sincerity and commitment that goes with real love.

I don't think those old lyrics make sense anymore in these times. Today we need songs that depict the new mindset. Most of the songs today have a visual appeal. They are situational.

If I have watched the movie, I might appreciate the song more than if I have not watched it.

Well, element of imagination is imho not always the criterion for assessing good song writing. Context, manipulation of language, word play, meaning all of these go into making great lyrics. And I think these elements have been really well used in recent times. And not only that, there are plenty of songs that fall into the traditional genre of good song lyrics.
