I think the songs that the contestants are selecting (or are asked to sing) do not offer them much opportunity to show their real potential. For last several rounds the songs contestants are singing are from the newer movies where rhythm plays bigger roles than the melody and the words. They do not really challenge the contestants. Remember Sharib and Ujjani mostly went unnoticed until they sang Lagi Tumse Man Ki Lagan and Mausam ki Adalabadali Mein? I think it will be worthwhile for SRGMP to have one round of classical songs where the contestants will really be put to the test and those who are really well trained, have perfect control over sur and have melody in their voice will get an opportunity to display their full potential.

If SRGMP really decides to go for a classical songs round, here are some great classical songs that will help the best singers really distinguish themselves from the rest---

song/singer/movie/music director/raag

Kuhu Kuku Bole Koyaliya -- Lata/Suvarna Sundari/Adi Narayan Rao/ Sohoni
Naino Mein Badara Chhaye -- Lata/Mera Saya/Madan Mohan/Bhup
Jiya Le Gayo Ji Mora Savariya -- Lata/Anapadh/Madan Mohan/Yaman
Chota Saa Baalama Ankhiyan Neend Udaye Le Gayo-- Asha/Raagini/OP Nayyar/Tilang
Kali Ghata Chhaye Mora Jiya Ghabarae - Asha/Sujata/SD Burman/Pilu
Na Jiya Lage Na, Tere Bina Mera Kahi Jiya Lage Na -- Lata/Anand/Salil Chaudhary/Malgunji
Jao Re Jogi Tum Jao Re - Lata/Amrapali/Shankar Jaikishan/Bhoop

Laga Chunari Mein Daag -- Manna Dey/Dil Hi To Hai/Roshan/Bhairavi
Madhuban Mein Radhika Nache Re - Rafi/Kohinoor/Naushad/Hameer
Puchho Na Kaise Maine Rain Bitayi - Manna Dey/Meri Surat Teri Aankhen/SD Burman/Ahir Bhairav
Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baje Payeliya - Manna Dey/Mere Huzoor/Shankar Jaikishan/Darbari Kanada
Nache Man Mora Magan Tikta Dhigi Dhigi -- Rafi/Meri Surat Teri Aankhen/SD Burman/Bhairavi
Koi Sagar Dilko Bahalata nahin - Rafi/Dil Diya Dard Liya/Naushad/Kalavati

I think only Nihira and Sharib can do full justice to these songs. Others will struggle with their breath. I would love to hear Nihira singing one or more of these songs in the rest of the rounds. If she does, then nobody will ever question her superiority over others.

But alas! with costume, make-up and performance coming ahead of everything, these kinds of songs will hardly find a place in this contest....

salil I agree with your idea of classical round. but your opinion about nihira and sharib only can sing classical song is wrong. let us ask paresh to sing a classical based hindi song then many people may change their views about him and his singing talent. I have listened his classical song, and he is very comfortable to sing classical based song. I hope tvs srgmp will keep one round of classical based songs in the competition.

my choice isalso for the classical roundmy choice is for the classical round also because this will help in judging the contestent skill of rhe base they have in knowing the ragas . 😉 as they are in agnipariksha round so they must get into the fire to comeout as a glittering gold. 😕 😕 this will be easy for everyone to judge the best participents.

👏 👏 👏 First of all thank you for educating us on the above mentioned songs. Those are some of my fav, but i did not know what raag they were based on,. I really loved the detail.

I totally agree with you , they should keep a classical based round , and like you said it would be a treat to hear sharib and nihira sing. But i dont think its happening since sa rega ma is more keen on trying to copy fg. 😡

Phool gendawa na maro is from Dhooj Ka Chand, sung by Manna Dey and composed by Roshan,. It is based on raag Bhairavi. Dhanya bhag seva ka avsar paya is indeed from a relatively recent movie Sur Sangam (1985) and the female version is sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy. Almost all songs of this movie are classical and the composer Laxmikant Pyarelal used pure classical singers like Rajan Sajan Mishra for some of the songs of this movie.

I think some of the other songs that the contestants can try are:

Jhoothe naina bole (From Lekin by Asha)
Jyoti kalash chhalke (From Bhabhi by Lata)
or even lately
Albela Sajan Aayo re (Hum dil de..)
Piya tora kaisa abhiman (Shubha mudgal from Raincoat)

Sorry, I am not classically trained and so cannot mention the raags..

But I think this round will be the real acid test to get the best singers....

Thanks Salil once again for telling me about
Phul gendwa na maro...is it picturised on Aga or Mehmood?
Rajan and Sajan MIshra are trained classical singers and do classical concerts.singing for the film Sur Sangam was incidental.
