It depends on the audience. A niche market audience usually has a defined taste in music. Be it Hindustani classical, modern melody or a western opera. A genuine music lover will not mind a good singer stand alone on stage and sing A-Capella or an lengthy piece of violin or tabla solo. For them immersion in the live music experience provides the money value of paying for a concert. These people too have presence, but its more of an interactive and informative presence.

Now when we come to popular music, we are entering a whole different ball game. Popular music is intended to cater to a wide variety of fickle audiences most which do not really have a solid background in music or selective tastes in music. In this case they are not merely looking for good music - they need the extra X factor. They need something more to keep them engaged and entertained. Sometimes it needs a singer wildly jumping up and down on stage going crazy, sometimes its explosive pyrotechnics, sometimes its barenaked bareadults dancing seductively around the stage and sometimes its loud pumped up beats and exaggerated movements - just something unusual that makes the concert extraordinary. The presence needed is the blow your mind presence.

Obviously a reality TV show broadcast across the world to millions of people is not catering to a niche market of people who have specific tastes in music. Its catering to the masses. That means the masses will go for what they want - cuteness, sultriness, annoying hyperactivity whatever. Its not fair of people to complain that reality shows do not cater to talent. These were not designed to cater to talent - they were designed to cater to fickle mass popularity. I

But I know you cannot help but complain of the idiocracy in voting. Its like not only does talent not matter, logic and concern for ones ear drums has also flown out the window. I could just shoot somebody when I hear the results.

yes, talent and popularity dont go hand in hand anymore.

Here's how it works:

As aww said, just singing is fine in private shows. WHY? because the motive of the ppl attending these shows is to listen to good music.

but in concerts or competitions in front of a bigger audience, the goal of the ppl is to "have a good time" which does not imply singing.

Basically this is totally different from the old school of thought(where singing was given sole priority)

so as long as ppl understand this and try to give moreimportance depending on the place where they are singing, they'll be fine 😊

Hey, that's exactly what I meant 👍🏼

Point is that the USP of SRGMP all these years was the quality of singing. If everything is done away in the name of X-factor then what difference is there between SRGMP and Indian Idol? SRGMP all these years had maintained high TRPs by maintaining its standard of singing. X-factor is necessary, but that should not come at the cost of quality. What is happening now is that SRGMP is doing away with Quality for the sake of TRP, which is not acceptable.

If one had to do world tours, I can see Yathart pulling the crowd with peppy numbers.....where as Hemant is more private show singer, where one enjoys soulful singing in a private show setting.

Pls Yathart fans, take this a compliment for yathart...he is a singer for today's generation.

As much as i can see hemant has the potential to be one like daler mehendi or kailash kher...of 2020 i believe u think yatarth has more persence than those two guys as well since they also sing less for the crowd...? 😉..... frankly... none of participants have stage presence...

Shreyasi is veri good in the lot and with that 10/10 performance I dont know why they need the grand finale.. she just blew everyone out of the competition with the Black song....she is just too good for all these second runners to even come close to.....

hmmm...IMO stage presence means nothing without good singing in the first place. it can only be like a tie breaker for 2 singers who are equally talented I guess. at least that is how it should be on SRGM(P)....Indian Idol is a totally different story.
