Kumar Sanu does a 'Slumdog' spinoff, turns producer

Veteran singer Kumar Sanu has donned the producer's cap and perhaps inspired by the astounding success of "Slumdog Millionaire" is now making a film on the street children of Mumbai.

Titled "Yeh Sunday Kyon Aata Hai," the film starring Mithun Chakraborty and Kashmira Shah, is about children living on Mumbai's railway platforms.

Similar to Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches film in which the lead pair of children was picked up from Mumbai's slum, Sanu's film also features four children who actually live on the Goregaon Railway station.

"The four kids are real life street children, they earn a living by polishing shoes on the railway platforms of Mumbai. They star alongside Mithun, who plays a benevolent Sikh policeman. The children now attend school and are keen on continuing their studies," Kumar Sanu told reporters here.

The playback singer who was in the capital to promote his upcoming venture claimed that his film would portray "poverty with dignity unlike Danny Boyle's film."

"My film will be a thousand times better than the film 'Slumdog Millionaire'.🤣 Instead of making a spectacle out of poverty and poor children, it strives to give the message that there is dignity even in poverty," the singer said.

"I don't consider 'Slumdog' as a realistic film as it depicts only the bad side of the city," he added.

Sanu who had very recently received a Padma Shri said that he considers the award an honour. " I am happy at receiving the award but it should have come earlier. I had been waiting for the past 20 years for a recognition like this. I have received plenty of awards from around the world, but this one is special."

Kumar Sanu who had once reigned the Bollywood playback scene has been gradually missing from action and he attributes his depleting levels of output to the prevailing "low standards of music in the industry."

"I made my career out of singing certain kind of songs and I have an image to live up to. I would not have sung the kind of songs that are being made now. I have refused plenty of songs over the years, but now I have some good songs coming up," said Sanu.

Jab gaana gaane ko nahi mila, toh movie banane chale. Yeh hai Bollywood ka kamaal. Kyon?

What the crap? He plans on portraying poverty with dignity? What does that even mean? Why are people in so much denial about the true aspects of poverty? I can already tell that his movie will be one of those typical Bollywood movies where a kid will go from zero to hero, and he'll call it his depiction of "poverty with dignity", what bull, there's no dignity if the portrayal is unreal and far from the truth. Instead of wasting all that money in trying to make millions and gain success like Slumdog did, he should take that money and donate it to a good cause, like educating the kids living in slums in Mumbai, maybe then he'll actually get a song to sing in the industry, you know through publicity. Because in the end, there is no dignity in poverty, there is only dignity in the people. And that's it.

Thanks for the article!

It is a wonder why they refuse to give it to Rafi Sahab.
There must be a Board who decides and I am sure Rafi Sahab has been short-listed too.
Furthermore up to now they do not have a replacement for Rafi Sahab either.
