slumdog millionaire is running in our local theatres. One of my american colleagues told me he had seen it with his girlfriend over the weekend and they both had liked it very much. anyone seen this movie? I am rather hesitant to watch since it is a movie based in India made by a western director and the regular tendency in such films is to highlight the poverty aspects. I think I will rather pass.

Fantastic input from Amitabh Bachchan on his blog:

On blog, comments for the film 'SlumDog Millionaire' and the anger by some on its contents, prompt me to say the above. If SM projects India as Third World dirty under belly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky under belly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations. Its just that the SM idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a Westerner, gets creative Globe recognition. The other would perhaps not.

The commercial escapist world of Indian Cinema had vociferously battled for years , on the attention paid and the adulation given to the legendary Satyajit Ray at all the prestigious Film Festivals of the West, and not a word of appreciation for the entertaining mass oriented box office block busters that were being churned out from Mumbai. The argument. Ray portrayed reality. The other escapism, fantasy and incredulous posturing. Unimpressive for Cannes and Berlin and Venice. But look how rapidly all that is changing. Retrospectives in Paris and New York. Dedicated TV channels running Hindi cinema on prime timings. Premiers at Leiscester Square, the home of all Hollywood royalty, thronged by hundreds on the street in cold biting weather. Affable recognition at most corners of the universe… And a dear friend from Los Angeles wires in that Hollywood is abuzz with India and the phenomenal talent that exists there. We're talking cinema still !

The movie portrayed a character similar to that of Big B in very poor light. Anil Kapoor played a egoistic host cracking pretty cheap jokes at the poor contestant in the quiz show. Amitabh on the other hand used to keep his conversations with the contestants dignified on Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Today Jago India at 7.00 pm in evening on Zee news was based on this film and it was asked why India is mostly shown in a poor light in West movies, is it just another movie depicting India in poor light .... ..shall post the link the moment it comes on youtube.

Huge debate is going on several blogs articles regarding this.....Just now I saw the entire Jago India at 7.00 pm in evening on Zee news, it was based on this film and many prominent people asked why India is always shown in a poor light in West..shall post the link the moment it comes on youtube.

ID ji there is no doubt the movie has raised the desired controversy among the Indians in India and abroad... .intellectuals and ordinary folks alike.....I myself found too hard to digest in many areas ....and rasied this question with my family and friends ....my problem is not u denouncing the movie's approach . .... I completely agree with Amitabh B and the articulated way he summarised the whole issue ...watched in aajtak yesterday ....My problem is u not giving credit to AR rahman winning GG....It is a huge achievement ....I know ARR doesn't need this award to prove us how great he is ...but he needed this award so that the whole world learn how great he is ...he himself said that he learnt the I tunes downloads of SM have multiplied several times and is now in top spot after he received this award 👏👏 ..He also said many international offers r coming his way ...and I am proud of that ...I'll be happier if he wins oscar too .....
But yes ....if u talk about the movie and this image of "stark reality" ...then of course we may have lot of common views to share 😊...but this is a music section and I will talk about ARR ..and I will say that I am happy for him ..happier he is getting more accolades ....happiest if he wins oscar😃

yes bruno agree with you. Perhaps my anger was misdirected, and I apologise for some of my previous comments. Being a member here you would know I am myself a big fan of ARR and quite a few of my old posts are dedicated to him.

Not only this Bruno we need to see this movie because on a few review I read India is shown in pretty bad light as a country of evil people where everything is wrong.

Exactly! We should be discussing ARR's music .... comparing the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack to ARR's past work. Also, its a double treat for ARR ... Jodha Akhbar also won best music in some award show. Kudos to him for his sucess! 😊

On a side note, Raj will be so proud of me (for making a music related reply without any arguments, and encouraging musical topics, right? 😉) --- hopefully he'll forgive me for all the chatting that went on last night. 😳😆
