But you always keep a gal picture though! 😉 You didnt think I was a kingfisher or a coconut tree, did ya? 😕 I somehow picture you as a girl all the time - the picture, the name, the diplomacy... 😃

Tell me about the term madrassi! I have been approached by old Indian ladies a few times asking me if I am Punjabi!! When I say no I am from the South, then they make this face and make the remark, 'oh so you are a madrassi!' I never understood why during my initial days outside India, but now I know...

madrasi basically means a person from madras aka chennai. so a tamilian. normally any person from south india is branded as tamilian 😡.

ye i since i am from punjab, most people in Punjab call people from the south madrasi, or tamil. at first i thought that all of south India speaks tamil, until i found out from my friends, i had no idea. what do they speak in kerala, does anybody know. i only have knoeledge about north India, another area that i have know knoeledge about is north east India. all the small states, i don't even know their names, i never knew their was a state called Mizoram until th recent elections happened there.

They speak Malayalam in Kerala. Maybe I shouldnt be answering your question - hmm, it looks like you have forgotten to welcome me unlike all others who have answered for the topic - just a reminder. 😉
No, those people who addressed me as a madrassi were not Punjabis, but from Delhi or somewhere around that area. Okay in South, each state has their own language and there is no common language like the Northern states where Hindi is like a common language for all. Malayalam is the language in Kerala (where Trivandrum and Kochi are), Tamil in Tamilnadu (where Madras aka Chennai is), Kannada in Karnataka (where Bangalore is), and Telugu in Andhra Pradesh (where Hyderabad is). Got it? 😃

Calling people from four different southern states in India with the tag "Madrasi" is an ignorance on people's part...
Just like when we introduce ourselves as Gujaratis to average american they think we are "Patels" who are into hotel & motel business....There is more to people and where they come from...
Even people from No. India are catagorized as Punjabis when there are Sikhs, Punjabis, Sindhis and kayastha....I am sure there is more to No. India....
Anyways mere do paise on this topic...
Nice to know OBJ that you are Mr. Sen from Chennai.... I could figure "Akanna" had to be from one of the southern states...😃

Sorry akanna ji, i did forget to give you my thanks. SO here is a special one from me!

Thanks for the information, it becomes confusing when INDIA suddenly makes new states out of old ones and and changes the names of the cities. I seriously though that Chennai and Madras were differnet places, until the IPL started!

Hmm... I wonder how?! I think you guessed that because I have said openly a few times that my Hindi isnt that good, and that I could not decipher some of the phrases in Hindi ir Urdu... But there are so many mallus I know who speak wonderful Hindi, and even without the mallu accent. In fact, English has become my main language lately and I speak in English 95% of the time now... I speak my language only over the phone to my folks - I cannot believe it!! 😕
