very difficult to choose.......Alka, Shreya, Chitra, Sujatha and now Chinmai have beautiful and lovely voices ( they sound feminine) which add sweetness to melodious songs.....back to the question......I don't think I'm qualified to judge them....but I think shreya is good at solo songs where as alka is superb at duet songs......her voice blends perfectly with udit, sonu nigaam, shankar mahadevan, etc.....

my personal favourite is alka.....there are songs (tunes) which I dislike but many times alka made me listen to it because of her voice.....

we think on same line...😊
what is shreya singing in munbe was please tell me.😛

Alka said in one interview she is more from Lata ji's school of music here is what she has to say about the legend:

ALKA YAGNIK (singer):

For me, she's like a member of my family. I've been listening to her songs since I was about four years old. She's like a goddess for me -- someone I've always followed. She has been my inspiration, I've tried to mould my career like hers.
She's perfect -- her voice, the way she sings. Her voice is so beautiful that even if she playbacks for some ordinary-looking actress, her face starts looking beautiful.
She's turning 70, and may she complete at least another 70.
Till today, when I go for work or am travelling in my car, it's not my songs or anyone else's that I listen to. They are always Lataji's songs. She has indirectly been my guru, because I'm still learning from her.
I've met her a couple of times. She's always blessed me and encouraged me. When I was 11 and was being groomed by Kalyanji-Anandji, I'd expressed the desire to watch her record a song. So they took me along for a recording.
The film was Heera and she was singing a song with Mohammad Rafi. I watched her sing and later touched her feet. I still remember what she said to me that day. She said, 'If you want to pursue music, do so. But let me tell you one thing -- finish your studies first!' I was extremely touched and it's something I'd always remember.
I feel there's a glow on her face which is a spillover of her shining voice. Her voice is a very rare combination of purity, innocence, mischief, all rolled into one. The vulnerability that comes through in her voice -- I find that on her face too.
I've heard all kinds of stories about her a lot of them, negative as well as positive. But I maintain that a person whose voice is so pure must have a pure soul. I refuse to believe that such purity does not source from a pure soul. I'm not referring to just her work, that is beyond debate today.
Whenever I'm asked to speak about her, I fall short of words. Every word sounds insipid. How can I express how much I worship and respect her?

Since this was brought up I would just like to add. Shreya had this to say about Lataji in her interviews " I idolize Lataji, nobody can surpass her". Lataji has returned Shreya's compliments by saying she is one of the best singers in the business today. Back in her SRGMP years, she sang the Rajastani folk Suniyo Ji from Lekin in honor of Lataji and many of her other songs. Even after becoming a successful playback singer Shreya continued to sing some of Lataji's melodious numbers in her live concerts. Alkaji isn't the only one to consider this legend her aspiration 😉 😃.

Look at this Canadian who is alka yagnik fan:

Well, here I am, "Alka Yagnik Fan".
(In Mumbai, October 2005)

Are you surprised that I am not East Indian or that I am so "mature"
(or should I simply say "old!")? That's OK.

In the mid 1990's I was introduced to Bollywood movies. I began to collect music I really liked based on the melodies, arrangements, singer preference and lyrics. My collection currently consists of about 1200 tunes, most from the mid-1990's and later.

I truly love listening to these tunes because of how they sound, what they say and, as is the case for many people, because of the memories - hopefully good - they evoke. In general, I really like the softer, melodious love songs and select tunes that have a catchy beat, to my ears at least. I get real pleasure in sharing this collection of songs with others since I have discovered that many people like the same songs. It just warms me to know that all through the day and night, from all around the world, that people are listening to my collection, presumably enjoying the same songs that I find so uplifting. That is my only reason for doing this. I have no commercial motive. I am not trying to sell anything or raise money.

As you might already know, or guess, I am a VERY BIG Alka Yagnik fan, hence the nick-name "Alka Yagnik Fan." When I started listening to Bollywood music, I noticved very quickly that Alka Yagnik's singing had a "magical" impact on me and she very quickly became my most favourite artist and I sought to gather her songs. I am grateful to her for this gift.

I have had the very great privilege to personally meet with Alka-ji, her mother and daughter on a number of different occassions in Mumbai and Vancouver over the past several years. Even though Alka-ji is so very busy and such a celebrity, she, and her family, took the time to see me, one of her zillion fans, and make me feel so very comfortable and welcome. What a thrill it was to chat with her, listen to her sing, watch her record, and to have a chance to personally thank her for her wonderful music. I can say that she is truly a genuinely wonderful person in addition to being such an extraordinary artist.

I have been fortunate so see a few of the great Bollywood singers in concert. These include Alka Yagnik, of course, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Sukhwindher Singh. I'd love to hear Abhijeet in concert and, of course, Alka Yagnik over and over again.

I live in Vancouver, Canada, which is a very beautiful part of the world. The following picture shows the downtown and harbour. You can clearly see where the cruise ships dock during the summer.

I haven't heard her enough, but from what little I've heard, I do think she gets shrill.

Ah she sounds great to me. Certain Western and Chines classicals have some of the shrillest notes and I am used to it.

For me, Alka Yagnik is definitely better than Shreya. Alka's voice is different. She has changed her singing from "Koi aaye mera dil thamle..." to "Gali me aaj chand nikala"
Her album, Tum yaad aaye was also very good..

Shreya's advantage in my opinion:
1. clear harkat, murki etc (some pointed out already)
2 . comfortable with several languages : She has recorded in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi, besides Hindi. Her pronunciation of the zh syllable, which is unique to Tamil , is considered to be her strength
3. excellent in soft/semiclassical numbers but Alka is no less (remember saawariya (swades), chand chupa (HDDS).
Alka has on the other hand sung some fast tracks (mentioned above) which Shreya has to prove.
