Moulli's back with Resham Dankh

She has almost disappeared from the tube post Sarkkar on Zee. And now Moulli Ganguly is all set to woo the telly audience with her charismatic performance, as Mrs. Divya Balraj, in Resham Dankh on Star One.

"Resham Dankh, unlike many serials, has a well-defined, strong story line,...."

Well known for doing dramatic roles, this will be the first time where Moulli will be essaying a role which is light on emotions. "Till date I have played characters which are dark and with a mixture of emotions, ranging from anger to sadness to revenge. But in Resham Dankh, I will be acting like a normal woman. She has her share of happiness and problems. But there is a touch of comic relief too. This aspect is what struck me, and also prompted me to take up this show,"says the Bong actress.

"Resham Dankh, the title itself means something as soft as satin too, could give you pain. Too hard to believe, isn't it? The show's theme is centered on a wonder child who changes the family's destiny," adds this doe eyed beauty.

How her new serial will fare with regards to viewership, we ask and she states, "It all depends on the story line. There are many shows on various channels which were thought to be a dud, but proved to be otherwise. Resham Dankh, unlike many serials, has a well-defined, strong story line, right from the start to it's end, which is based on a novel. So it should strike a chord with the audience and thereby be popular".

Ator Sumeet Raghavan, who became popular as the bumbling husband Saahil in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (Star One), is all set to prove that he can act tough too.

In the forthcoming supernatural thriller Akela (Sony), Sumeet plays the ghost of a deceased ex-cop. He reluctantly divulges, "Now that you seem to have an inkling, all that I can say is that my character Savio is like Casper (the comic character of a friendly ghost). Savio helps his buddy (Sudhanshu Pandey) in solving crimes. The thriller has its light-hearted moments!"

Will he be convincing as a cop given his soft face? Sumeet shoots back, "Aren't there cops who do not necessarily have a stern and grim face?"

After being nagged by Monisha (Rupa Ganguly) in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, going Akela in the show must be a kind of relief for the actor. Sumeet replies with a laugh, "They have not yet zeroed in on any actor to pair with me. But I hope the character is different from Monisha's."

In real life, Sumeet is not fond of the scare-fare. "The morbid scenes with eyes popping out of masks put me off. Give me a romantic comedy any day," he asserts.

Meanwhile, Sumeet will also be seen in Jamnadas Majhethia's new family show Resham Dankh. "It's a powerful character of an elder brother," he concludes. Off-screen Sumeet is married to noted Marathi actor Chinmayee and they have two children, Neerad and Deeya.

Mouli settles the score w ith Rupali

Rupali Ganguli got unceremoniously replaced in Resham Dankh

Sapana Patil Poojary

Rupali Ganguli, popularly known as Monisha of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai had her hopes dashed when she did not bag the role of Divya Balraaj in Resham Dankh. Although she had not been finalised for the role, she was under the impression that she would be doing the role. It was just a matter of time before things were expected to fall in place. And then suddenly she got the news that Mouli Ganguly had bagged the coveted role.

According to sources, "Rupali was upbeat about doing the serial and was looking forward to acting in it. She was hurt when she heard about Mouli doing the role."

When contacted, Rupali says, "Generally I don't go for auditions, but this time I did, only because it was JD's (Jamnadas Majethia and Aatish Kapadia's) serial. I have worked with them in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and was very keen on doing this serial too. Even Aatish was encouraging enough. I really don't know what happened."

Apparently, Rupali got to know about it a few days later. She says, "I got to know from JD that Mouli is doing the role. I was very disappointed. When I enquired about not my exclusion, he simply said that there were 'various reasons'. And I didn't feel like asking him for an explanation."

Expressing her bitterness, Rupali didn't turn up for the launch party of the serial. "My father was not well and so I couldn't manage to go for the party. Everyone thought that I was unhappy, but that is not the reality. Even JD called me the next day to ask me why I didn't come," says Rupali.

Rupali added in a self-consoling tone, "Rajesh Kumar (who played Rosesh in Sarabhai…) is now in Baa, Bahoo Aur Baby and Sumeet Raghavan (who played Saahil in Sarabhai…) got a role in Resham Dankh. So I guess, I will also be offered a role in their forthcoming project. Not only me, but many big names had auditioned for the role of Divya Balraaj. JD and Atish are sticklers for perfection and I understand that they must have had reasons for casting Mouli. But we haven't let the issue affect our relationship. They are special to me because they have given me one of the best characters; that of Monisha."

JD says, "It's destiny. Both Rupali and Moulli are competent actors. Rupali is already a part of Hats Off family. She should just keep her fingers crossed and who knows, she might be a part of our forthcoming projects too."

F Factor

Mauli Ganguly's food and fitness formula

The small screen's most in-demand star Mauli Ganguly, believes that regular exercise is very important. It is good to be healthy and energetic to keep going everyday. The almond-eyed Mauli shares her views on food and fitness with ShaadiTimes.

I avoid carbs
When I think of food I think differently. It all depends on my mood. If I am shooting I feel it is necessary and very helpful. But when I am at home, food means extra calories.

For breakfast I have a glass of milk, cornflakes and some fruits. Lunch is simple, chapati , dal and sabji . I always carry home cooked food whenever I am shooting. I prefer vegetarian food.

I have an early dinner by 8.30 in the evening and avoid carbohydrates.

I love sweets
I love eating Bengali sweets, chocolate mousse and kulfi.

I cannot cook
I don't know to cook. In fact I am not very fond of cooking. After I finished my final year, there was nothing much to do and hence did my hotel management for 7 months. We had to learn to cook non-veg and I don't like non-veg so I quit the course.

I love biryani
Legacy of China,Urban Tadka are my favourite eating joints. I like to eat Chinese and Indian food, specially biryani.

I exercise regularly
Regular exercise is very important. Since I am always busy shooting and do not have particular time to go to the gym, I have a trainer who comes home regularly. I do all sorts of exercises, meditation and yoga.

I take special care of myself
I am in a profession where I have to take special care of my skin, my body, and myself. Due to time constraints I cannot go to the parlour regularly. I therefore buy good skin products particularly for my face. I do my clean-ups regularly. Once in a while, I believe in going to a doctor's clinic instead of visiting the beauty parlours.

My word
Enjoy life. Eat well. You look like what you eat, so be careful. Not everybody is good with metabolism so eat right. It is good to be healthy because when you are healthy you have lots of energy, and you need energy to work, so it's a cycle.

A candle light dinner for me
I haven't found my man yet. But yes, whenever I find him, I would like to have a romantic candle light dinner with my man.

Rahil's courteous greet
This is what 'getting into the skin of the character' truly means. It seems that Rahil Azam's screen persona has rubbed into his real life too!

In Star One's Resham Dankh he plays Aditya Balraj, an absolute gentleman, who treats everyone with respect and loves his family. And this courteous nature of his is not just restricted to his reel life.

This is evident if one were to call up this guy. His answering machine greets you with Rahil's deep voice apologizing for not being to able to answer the phone as he is tied up with some work. And the funniest aspect is that the entire message is taped in chaste Hindi, filmy ishtyle!

Here is the entire voice mail for you:
Eh kash, is waqt hum apse behas kar pate,
Lekin afsoos hum is waqt ek zaroori kaam main ulje hue hain
Isliye krupya aap apne shubh naam aur number apni pyaari awaz ke zariye chod dijiyega
Hum aapse vaada karte hain, ke hum aapse turanth hi behas karne ki poori poori koshish karenge.

So all folks out there think out of the box when it comes to your voice mails. You'd never know we would chance up on it and feature it here!

RAHIL AZIM & MOULI GANGULY INTERVIEW

He is young and ambitious but will not take on anything that comes his way. Rahil Azim who's featured in serials like Hatim, Yeh Meri Life and the ongoing Saarthi is now busy with his latest Resham Dunk. Screen catches up with this budding artiste for a tete-a-tete...

What is Resham Dankh all about?
Resham Dankh is a social thriller. The story is about a business family and how a child born into the family brings it closer. In short, Resham Dunk, is a story of a family and depicts ow a child changes day-to-day affairs of the family. This is a gripping drama of young parents' unconditional love for their child. A riveting story of unthinkable betrayal, revenge and supreme sacrifice.

Who plays the child?
It is small wonder Yash Bhadrani who plays the key role of Dev Balraj, my son.

The story sounds interesting.
In fact, the serial is based on Aatish Kapadia's Gujarati novel by the same name. The idea of the serial came from the story that Kapadia penned down for Chitralekha. It has a definite beginning, middle and end and will not drag on endlessly like other soaps.

What role do you play in the serial?
I play the main protagonist Aditya Balraj, a very big business tycoon. He is a shrewd person but at the same time he is affectionate to the extent that he is obsessive about them.

You got noticed in Yeh Meri Life Hai. What happened after that?
In Yeh Meri Life Hai, I played the villanious Ashmit Gujral. My role in the serial gave me lot of fame. I got to portray different shades in one role that helped me get a lot of fan following specially abroad. I got even more famous after my character turned negative. After the serial rounded off in November last, I decided to take a two-month break. Would you believe that I refused offers right from Prithviraj Chouhan, Akela and Viraasat. But when I went through the script of Resham Dankh, I was sure that it was written with me in mind. The confidence to portray the role grew and without hesitation I lapped it up.

Charismatic She's now a seasoned actress having done serials like Kaahin Kissii Roz, Saakshi and Sarkar. Still she considers herself to be a learner. Now Mouli Ganguli is busy shooting for Resham Dankh, that will be aired on Star One since August 14. Screen corners her for a brief interview...

You were a student of Hotel Management and Mass Communication. How did you end up acting?
I am a science graduate from Kolkata and came down to Mumbai to do my hotel management. Soon I realised that I wasn't cut out for it and left it midway. Then I joined a course in mass communication, but didn't complete that either! (smiles) At this juncture, I started getting many modelling offers and believe me, despite my best efforts, I could not resist the temptation.

Was there any objection from your parents?
I come from an educated family where people are settled in either a job or family business. Almost all my relatives knew hardly anything about this world. Entering the glam world was taboo for them. Hence initially there was a little resistance.

Tell us about the modelling assignments you have done. I did a lot of advertisements prominent among them being those of Pears, Rin, Ariel, Close-Up, Double Diamond, Asian Paints, Sonam Quartz, Britannia, Maggie and Bombay Dyeing.

What has been the fallout of Kahin Kisi Roz?
The fallout has been very encouraging. People still remember me as Shaina.Though I have been receiving offers by the dozens, I don't want do roles wherein I am required for two or three scenes because I am not ready to be projected as a mere showpiece. Besides, I am petrified of too much action. Like there was this scene I did recently in KKR, where my 'pallu' catches fire. The director did not want to use a dummy. I do not know how many times my heart skipped a beat.

What's your role in Resham Dankh?
I play Divya Balraj, Aditya's (Rahil Azim) wife. Though Aditya has an elder brother, he isn't married. Hence, Divya has got a very important task to play in the family. My character is a mix of childish, romantic etc. In fact my role demands enacting of all shades.

Have you worked with Rahil earlier?
Yes, both of us were together in Kahin Kisi Roz. Both of us got along very well.Rahil takes his job too seriously whereas I am of the type who would think that I could've done better.

It is heard that before agreeing to do Kaahin Kissi Roz, you had told Ekta Kapoor that you don't want to be portrayed as a bahu.
Absolutely. I didn't want to people to relate me as a bechari. If you are nice, you can still be a confident go-getter without being timid and helpless.

Having done a central role, will you play a second or a third bahu in a joint family?
I do not have an author-backed role in Resham Dankh. The role has lots of substance and I am almost there in every frame. If the second or the third bahu has that much weight, I am game. Once a director feels that I can do a particular role I take it as a challenge to do it.

How important is a director to you?
Please don't get me wrong. When I say that I have completely got into the skin of the character, that does not imply that I don't need a director. I am purely a director's actor. Without a director, I would be lost. I understand a director very quickly. Every director can extract the maximum out of me. Naturally, my best is a long way off.

'Ram Kapoor' becomes 'Jana Bhau'
Meet multi-faceted actor, Sooraj Thapar, as he chats with PREMA K about his role in Resham Dankh, his favourite screen character and how much he loves acting for theatre...
</>

A little about your character in Resham Dankh
I'm playing 'Jana Bhau' a character with shades of humour and negativity. He stays as a tenants in a chawl. The Balraj family becomes bankrupt and comes to live there. He opposes this as he wanted his friends to come and live there. He also aims to become the Corporator of the ward in which he lives so tries his hand at playing politics with people with people in the chawl. The humour bit is there's never any financial contribution from him even when everybody else does their bit.

What has been the response to this character?
There's been mixed response. My friends and co-stars find him cute and humorous. It's a well-defined character, so it's fun to perform.

Your characters seem to have a peculiar trait in them!
Ram Kapoor of Hum Saath Aath Hain was another well-defined character and people tried to ape him a lot. His laugh and Punjabi accent had become a style. I was even nominated for 'Best Actor' for the role. I also did a character called Saxena in Shree Sifarish Lal. He had a typical way of speaking. He'd first speak to himself and then perform an action.

Which has been your favorite screen character, so far?
I did Ajnabee in '95. It was co-produced by Danny Denzogpa and Romesh Sharma. I played a BSF officer in it and it was shot in LoC. It was a very strong character and in the end he even shoots his own brother in the end as his brother joins hands with terrorists. This was among the serious characters that I'd played. Of the humorous characters, it's Ram Kapoor of Hum Saath Aath Hain. Finally, I realized that making others laugh is very important in today's world. The character was well-portrayed and my accent and mannerisms really clicked with the audience. The best part was that although it was a comedy show, every episode ended on an emotional note. I'm also enjoying 'Jana Bhau' as my director, Dharam Pal, adds little punches to my character and enhances it. We used to be co-actors years back and I was surprised to see that he was to direct this show.
You are also into theatre!
I co-produce shows for Yatri. I'll be going to Dubai for some shows of Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon. We performed Perfect Husband in New Jersey'. The response to shows abroad is the same as one would get in Calcutta or even Ludhiana. It's amazing.

What prompted you to start your career with both theatre and television?
That was way back in '87. Theatre was the right medium for me to make my debut as an actor. It gave me the required amount of confidence and also taught me humility. I cleaned floors and even polished shoes of some actors. Theatre teaches you dignity for these things. It also teaches you how to laugh at your self. I feel an actor cannot do comedy unless he can make fun of himself. I'd also developed this habit of speaking to the writers about my characters so that I could enact them well. I do the same on television now.

Most actors feel theatre is more difficult than television!
I don't agree with that. We have a lot of rehearsals in theatre so it's easy for us to play our characters. Television is too fast-paced and there's no time to develop our characters.

How about films?
I'd love to do films if something good is offered to me. I think most of the times filmmakers think that television actors are too busy so stay away from us. I haven't yet approached any filmmakers but have no ego hassles about that. If I were to hear of someone auditioning for any role, I'd surely go for it. But otherwise, I'm happy doing television. What I'd really like to do on television is anchoring musical shows. I want to explore other possibilities on television.

How about direction?
Not yet. I'm enjoying acting.

How would you want to see yourself a few years from now?
A better actor who is very famous and also versatile. I'd also love to be known as an anchor. I also sing a bit although I haven't trained for it. My plays will continue. I'd love to do plays for other groups also. I'll also do English plays provided I get good roles and scripts.

'This delay is a minor disappointment'
Shameem Khan
Monday, November 13, 2006 17:11 IST

Banking on 'Arranged Marriage', Shweta Keswani has lost out on several big projects.

Star Plus is yet to give the green signal for UTV's 'Arranged Marriage'. Actor Shweta Keswani who was banking heavily on the show is naturally anxious. "The channel is waiting for a one-hour slot for the show. As soon as we get it, we are on. We have already shot 11 episodes of which five episodes are ready with the background score."
The story is about five wedding planners whose own love lives are a wreck. Besides Shweta, the star cast includes Bakhtiyaar Irani playing a socialite designer, Varun Badola with a mystery lurking around him, Rajeshwari who is a small town girl and Jignesh who is a car mechanic.

With the show being delayed, Shweta has surely felt the brunt. She has had to refuse several offers "I was offered 'Twinkle Beauty Parlour' and 'Left Right Left'. Also 'Resham Dankh' had come to me initially but the channel eventually settled for Mouli Ganguly."

The delay has cost her dearly which means it has been a setback in her career "See, once the show comes on air it will be big. In comparison, this delay is a minor disappointment" is her way of consoling herself.

Presently, Shweta does not have any shows on hand besides 'Arranged Marriage'. "It is by choice and not by chance that I have not taken on work. I have become choosy about my work and would rather wait than take on anything. Right now, I am busy with my live events and looking forward to my visit to Goa where my film 'Memsahib' is being previewed at the film festival. I have my hands full" she signs off.
