The birds were yellow, and they had a gentle black stripe across their stomach. As they flew over the lake, she thought they somehow managed to lighten the pale blue sky. She sighed, this daily business of fighting with him was now starting to grow on her. All she wanted was some peace, some bloody quite time so that she can think for herself, but the fates didn't seem to be working her way.

"Oh, so there you are." A grumpy voice called from behind. She didn't even have to turn back to guess who it was. She groaned again and turned back, "Why are you bothering me?"

He put up his hands, "Look, those people want you inside. Your catching a cold won't be the brightest thing for our company, you know."

She gave a frustrated sigh and started to get up. For once, she thought, she was lucky that he hadn't taunted her yet. But she even seemed to think too fast. "Maybe you should think about tying your hair before the conference. Who knows, people might be afraid of scarecrows", he called laughingly as she started to go. This time, she thought it was too much. She turned back so fast that he almost lost his balance, but he didn't take his eyes off her person.

"What is your problem, huh? Why do you make it a daily routine to make my life a living hell? What pleasure do you get? You know.. sometimes—sometimes I wish that you would die." She looked up just in time in between her rant to see him bow his head for a fraction of a moment, before he was icy as ever. "Tia, I'm dying." Her first urge was to laugh at his face and say "Yeah, right", but something about his face seemed to stop her. All she could do was to stutter, fully expecting him to burst out laughing saying, "Good joke" but he didn't. He moved very close to her, so close that their noses could touch. So close that she could see her eyes reflected in his. So close..

And then he started speaking, "You see, I have this flu. I have this flu which is incurable. No doctor, no specialist in the whole goddamn world could fix it. And I'm slowly dying because of it. It started a long time ago, this flu. I thought it wasn't serious, and I never did anything to better it. I have been to every doctor, every specialist and even every psychiatrist who might have a chance to cure me, but nothing. I could've killed myself on the spot, or I could've chosen to suffer the rest of my pathetic life before dying. And I chose the second. Good choice, no?"

"What is it, this disease of yours?" she asked quietly. He turned towards her, preparing to answer when they heard people calling them from inside. Slowly making their way through the rocky mountainous parts, they were almost there when her feet stumbled. He didn't look back, thinking that she was there beside him, which was not the case. When he did turn back, she had rolled quite a way down the steep slope. He quickly took off behind her, rolling and wincing through the bruising stones until he reached her. By the time, many of the officials of the conference had come to their rescue.

He looked at her. She was unconscious, and she looked like a broken fairy. Her hair was neatly parted, and her make up was astute. There was slight panic in her eyes, but other than that her face was peaceful. It showed an aura of smartness, calm, and it was refreshing. Her hair smelt mildly of cinnamons and apple, and as he allowed himself to smell it, he never noticed that he was slipping down the cliff.

"I'm sorry, Madam, but by the time we had rescued him, his heart rate was already fluctuating due to his blood pressure. He might have a few hours, I think, but not more."

Tia turned her face against the window sill of the doctor's reception area and closed her eyes. It took her a lot of will power to not cry, and after composing herself somewhat, she turned back to the receptionist. "Can I see him, please?"

He looked peaceful, very peaceful sleeping. She would've almost thought he was sleeping, if not for the monitors surrounding him. She walked up to his bedside and ruffled his hair. His skin was pale but flawless. His lips had lost most of its moisture but they still looked inviting and irresistible. Not being able to control herself, she let a tear fall on him.

"Tia?" his voice sounded hoarse and frail when he talked. She turned back smilingly, and started smoothing his bed sheets until he caught her arm. "Tia, stop this faade. I know I'm dying alright? I can feel it in me. And nevertheless, as I said, I was dying before anyways.

She put a hand up to his cheek and asked him, "What disease did you have?" "Love-flu." He answered without hesitation, "I was – no am in love with you."

She turned back towards him shockingly, and searched his face for a joke. All she could see was sincerity. In a moment of great emotion, she hugged him tightly, which spoke for reassurance, apology and everything else at the same time.

It was when she had released him after a long interval, that she realized that he was gone. She saw a piece of paper folded on his bedside table. It contained just a few words, which were worth a lifetime.
