After storming the small screen with Remix (2004), TV's original chocolate hero is now anchoring a dance reality show, Nach Baliye 5. Taking time out from his hectic schedule, Karan Wahi tells us how being an anchor is different from being an actor.

How's an anchor different from an actor?
I'm still figuring that one out because this is the first time in nine years that I'm anchoring a prime time show. The producers told they want the Dilli-wallah in me to come out. (Laughs) So, it's capital stuff and I'm loving it! As an anchor, you drive the show so the challenges are different. (Smiles) You get better with practice.

How do you bring out the Dilliwallah in you?
I behave on the show as I would with my friends. There's a lot of fun and laughter. Jay (Bhanushali) and I keep pulling each other's leg. He was anchoring the show earlier and jokes that he's on the show so if I goof up, the producers have a replacement handy. I rib him saying that's a good idea as 'who would want to watch him dance anyway'!

You were a contestant on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, does that make you more sensitive to the players on Nach…?
For sure! At times when judges are stern to contestants who have practiced for a whole week, they break down. I understand what they are going through, having been there too. Some of the contestants are my friends, but I can't treat anyone like one on the show.

Are reality shows rigged?
The only reality show I won was Ritz Jeele Ye Pal. It was a travel show and there was no voting. I don't understand the voting procedure, so I can't comment on their authenticity. There are times when one wonders why someone didn't get enough votes. But while contestants can manipulate here and there, they cannot rig the entire procedure.

How much has the industry changed since the Remix days?
It's a whole new world now. I feel old at times! TV is giving newcomers opportunities which is good. But if someone's debut show flops, he or she is written off instantly without giving them time to hone their skills. That's not fair! Earlier shows ran for at least a year; now if the show does not get TRPs, in three months it's goodbye.

Like Sushant Singh Rajput who will be seen in films like Kai Po Che! And Peekay, are you also planning to graduate to films?
Yes, I am in talks with a few people, but I will take my time zeroing in on the right project. I'm an amateur when it comes to films and I know I won't get many chances,
