JUGAL BANDI
Different strokes
They both are as different as chalk and cheese, yet, Priya Wal and Shweta Gulati get along like a house on fire. BT talks to the actors playing Anvesha and Tia
PRIYA WAL
Describe Shweta Gulati (Tia Ahuja) as a person and professional.
• I have got to know Shweta only recently. When Remix began, we had different tracks. So, we hardly shot together but now we have a lot of scenes together. I think she is a great person to work with. Also, we shoot for around 16 hours a day, so we end up spending a lot of time together. She is a good actor and makes me laugh a lot. Since majority of the cast comprises of youngsters, we have a lot of fun on the sets.
So do you both hang out together off the sets?
• Not really. Our 16-hour shoot is full of masti. Other than that, we don't really hang out together. I have my own set of friends. Besides sleeping, I love to write in my free time. But the time we spend on sets is almost like hanging out together. We fight, play pranks and chat for long hours. Also, we do meet at professional parties sometimes.
How was life before Remix? And what's the difference now?
• Before Remix, I was into modelling. I have done around 25 print campaigns and a few advertisements. I used to stay in Delhi then. After I was selected for Remix I moved to Mumbai. I like Mumbai for the freedom that it gives me. Of course, working in Remix has been a great experience. The fact that people recognise me as Ashi (Anvesha's pet name) gives me a great high.
Do you identify with Anvesha? How similar or different are Priya and Anvesha?
• Yes. I am a lot like her. Like Ashi, I too love playing pranks. Though Ashi is a lot more mischievous, I can give Ashi tough competition. The best thing about this character is that it gives me a chance to be both negative and positive. Like normal people, Ashi likes certain people and dislikes some. She is very clear about what she wants and I identify with this particular characteristic.
Given an option between Tia and Anvesha, which role would you prefer?
• I love playing Anvesha because she is a lot like me. She is not Miss Goody-Two-Shoes or the vamp. She's a teenager and behaves like one. In fact, when I was auditioning for Remix I chose to audition for Anvesha's role because I loved the character. I don't think I'd have accepted any role other than that of Anvesha.
If not an actor, what would you be?
• I love animals, so if I wasn't into this profession, I would probably work for some channel that focusses on animals. Otherwise, I think I would have been happy modelling.
SHWETA
GULATI
Describe Priya Wal (Anvesha Bannerjee) as a person and professional.
• Personally, Priya is a brat, just like she is in Remix. She loves pulling everyone's leg and me included. At times when I do something stupid, she says, 'Shweta is becoming a Timbo in real life too!' (laughs). But as a co-star, she's very co-operative and professional. She's real fun to work with.
So, do you both hang out together off the sets?
• Just once in a while, when there is some Remix party or the entire starcast is hanging out together. But, I have my family and friends in Mumbai, so whenever I can to get, I spend time with them.
How was life before Remix? And what's the difference now?
• Life before Remix was relaxed to an extent, as there wasn't much work. And after Remix, it's work, work and work. But before the serial, there was lesser recognition, which is in abundance for me now. Also, now there is a lot more adulation and affection from fans. Kids tell me that they like me a lot and mothers tells me that they would like their daughters to be like me. There are more positives than negatives after Remix happened.
Do you identify with Tia? How similar or different are Shweta and Tia?
• Both are very emotional and touchy. Like Tia, I also cry at the drop of a hat! And, Tia's made me more conscious and selfobsessed about my appearance, which you have to be if you are in the showbiz. Earlier, I would wear a pair or jeans and any top with that. But now I take out at least three outfits and take a lot of time before zeroing down on one. The only aspect in which I'm dissimilar to Tia is that for Tia her dad is most important, but for me it's work. My family and friends crib a lot about this, but for me work is my first priority.
Given an option between Tia and Anvesha, which role would you prefer?
• Tia. This was the most difficult role in the serial, because of voice modulation and also because she has to be super sexy yet very innocent. During our workshop, I almost gave up and told my producers that I didn't want to play the role, and they even asked me if I wanted to play Anvesha. But then, I thought it will be very challenging for me to play Tia and so I took it up.
If not an actor, what would you be?
• I can't imagine doing anything else other than acting. If I don't work for a few days, I get withdrawal symptoms and I get very irritable and edgy. Anyway, I have a corporate background and have worked in a call centre for four odd months, so maybe I would still be doing that or married and a housewife...
