Sadiya Siddiqui: Indian TV has become TRP driven now
Sadiya Siddiqui

Popularly known as Anandi's Teacherji in Balika Vadhu, actress Sadiya Siddiqui, is trying her best to cope up with the changing trends of the television industry.

"I come from a time jab television mein performance pe dhyaan diya jata tha and not on makeup," says Sadiya, who shot to fame more than a decade ago with the show, Banegi Apni Baat. She was in Lucknow recently to promote her upcoming serial, Satrangi Sasural.

She adds, "As cliched as it may sound, it is indeed true that Indian television today has become extremely commercial and TRP-driven.That is why , viewers are now turning towards Pakistani serials and loving them 'coz they find them sensible. But you see, Indian television has produced similar shows in the past. Serials like Campus, Banegi Apni Baat, Tara, etc are examples of that time. I never knew the TRPs of my shows back then. We as a team focussed only on our acting and the script."

Even though Sadiya is adjusting a lot with the present working style of the industry , one thing that she is sure of is never using a body double for her scenes. "I am against the idea of using a body double. It's not about whether the viewers get to know or not, but my conscience just doesn't allow me to do that. I want to be physically present in each of my scenes," she says.

Is that the reason why she is so choosy about her projects? "I can't do anything that comes my way . Well, an interesting fact is that whether it was the character of Radha bua in Sasural Genda Phool or Sandhya in Balika Vadhu, most of the roles that I did were written keeping me in mind. I was surprised when Purnendu Shekhar, the writer of Balika Vadhu, told me that he had written the role keeping me in mind. Such a thing is rare to see on Indian television," she says.

Well, she is right. I very often lament about the sad state of Indian TV, and how it's regressed since the 90s. Pakistani shows , on the other hand, have maintained their standards with a little bit of tweaking to suit the times.
She doesn't mention Rangrasiya, because let's face it, her character was the most slaughtered one in the whole serial. Mala was the reason for Rudra's personality, her story should have been told very well. It was one of the focal points, along with Tejawat's trafficking. But they both took a back seat to iron-filled laddoos.

I am totally agree wid her view on today's condition of Indian tele. Its really sad that due to this pathetic TRP system Makers are moving around a set formula based shows. Due to TRP pressure they can't take a risk on any experimental concept.

I didn't see so many Pak shows so I can't say anything abt them but,I watched "Humsafar" n "Aaina Dulhan Ka" n I am really impressed wid their strong characterization n story presentation. As a viewer I can relate wid them because they look real n natural.

I have no hesitation to say that, whatever Indian shows are women's oriented (as per their thoughts) but, fact is they all are destroying n spoiling Indian women image very poorly.

I am also not surprised to see that,RR didn't mention here because,Its fact that Mala was most weak n worst character of this series, her character sketch was so patchy. No one can relate these kind of person in real life in this era. After all they were showing her as educated women but, sadly she was not aware wid Indian law n all rights of 1 Indian citizen.

This!!!

Whatever she said about Pak dramas is true. I would watch a zgh 5 times than watching a soap which runs for year with no story in it. Mostly the show are based on some social issues.

TFS, Joseph. Not surprised that she doesn't mention Rangrasiya ... her character and story should have been pivotal in the show, and it was completely butchered and sidelined ... her story was given no importance whatsoever, and it was the basis of Rudra's and Paro's character evolution ... or is should have been ... one lead deprived of his real mother, and the other lead reaped the benefits of having a mother figure in her life despite being orphaned, But they never showed Mala's story completely or gave any justification for running away and leaving her child behind.

I liked her a lot as Radha bua in SGP ... that story made me tune into SGP, and she was very good in the show. Might give this new show a try ... Zee shows are usually all cut from the same mould though, so not much expectation 😛

She's completely right about Indian TV being completely TRP driven ... that's why it's so pathetic these days. No one bothers about storyline and characters any more ... it's all about what those 8000 meters dictate. 🤢

Indian Tele show makers deserve some OSCAR kind of awards because, they have 1 very unique talent, they can continue a show widout any proper story (Thanks to all TRP aunties support because, they are used to it.)

TFS Joseph Bhai

I know we were so excited at first with Sadiya in RR - but I don't recall ever being impressed by anything she did on screen 😕

TV has been TRP driven for many years now

I don't think we can put the entire blame on people who are watching it, they are watching whatever is being shown to them.
They get hooked to a soap, which might be good in the beginning, but becomes messy and intolerable when they end up introducing too many characters, too much of drama. But still people will watch the show, and the makers will continue showing the crap.
Episodic shows are better, actors will get to play different characters, we'll get to watch good shows...which is not going to happen any soon 😆
